  • This study investigated the effects of prestressing force on the natural frequency of concrete beams considering changes in the self-weight of the beam. For this, a finite element formulation was derived to account for the increase in the stiffness of a beam-tendon system due to the axial force and deformation induced by prestressing of the tendon. The developed finite element formulation was validated with the data obtained in laboratory experiments. The experimental natural frequencies of the small prestressed concrete (PSC) beam specimens were consistent with those obtained using the proposed method. The first natural frequency increased almost linearly as the prestressing force increased. The proposed method was then applied to four actual PSC bridges typically employed in the field. Different from the laboratory specimens, the first natural frequencies of the actual PSC bridges barely changed or increased with increasing prestressing force. The results of an analytical parametric study showed that the increase in the natural frequency strongly depended on the magnitude of the prestressing force relative to the total weight of the structure. Thus, the variation in the natural frequencies of the actual PSC bridges with high total weight relative to the prestressing force was negligible due to the application of the prestressing force.

  • In the preliminary design stage of prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder bridges, the design factors decided by inexperience designer could heavily affect to the results of final design. There is a possibility that the design ends up with an excessively wasteful design. To achieve an economical design with preventing an excessive design, the optimal design technique has been developed using ADS optimal program and SPCFRAME in this study. The objective function for the optimal design problem is the material cost of box girders and constrained functions are constituted with design specifications and workability. The Sequential Unconstraint Minimization Technique (SUMT) is used for the optimal design in this study. We designed an uniform cross-section bridge and an ununiform cross-section bridge in the same design condition by optimal design technique developed in this study. Analyzing the results obtained for various tendon layouts, we suggest a standard tendon layout which gives the most effective structural behavior.

  • A feasibility study for nondestructively estimating prestress force of a grouted tendon using axial vibrations has been investigated. Total eight prestressed concrete beams with different stress levels have been specially designed and constructed for this investigation. The various axial vibration tests have been conducted in order to extract the dynamic characteristics of the prestressed concrete beams. It turns out that the axial frequency, elastic wave velocity and elastic modulus are nonlinearly increased as the prestress force level increases. It seems that the axial vibration characteristics of the existing grouted tendons are a feasible indicator for the identification of their tensile force.

  • A multi-level optimum design algorithm for prestressed concrete (PSC) box girders is proposed in this paper. To save the numerical efforts, a multi-level optimization technique using model coordination method that separately utilizes both tendon profile design and section design is incorporated. And also, a reduced basis technique for the efficient tendon profile optimization is proposed in this paper. From the numerical investigations, it may be positively stated that the optimum design of PSC box girder based on the new approach proposed in this study will lead to more rational and economical design compared with the currently available designs.

  • The widened Seoul-Bridge is the first continuous 8-span prestressed concrete(PSC) girder bridge in domain. The construction sequence of the bridge consists of S steps in a large way. The measuring in construction stage includes the determination of the allowable fluctuation value of beam stress in each step and the measurement beam stress during prestessing. The measured tendon prestress force was compared with the design value. When it was compared with the analytic result, the difference between the measured stress and the analytic stress was below allowable error. The friction loss and the anchorage slip loss of the tendon prestress force was lower than the design loss value.

  • Prestressed concrete(PSC) bridge structures with a number of continuous spans has been segmentally built in many countries. These methods include incremental launching method, movable scaffolding method, full staging method and balanced cantilever method. In these segmentally constructed prestressed concrete bridges, many construction joints exist and these construction joints are weak points in PSC bridges. The prestress force can be introduced prestress force continuously through the construction joints of PSC bridge superstructure using tendon couplers. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the structural behavior and ultimate flexural strength of construction joints in PSC girder bridge members. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up and a series of full-scale tests have been performed. Ultimate flexural strength of construction joint in PSC members with tendon couplers is decreased by approximately 10% for non-coupled members.

  • In the prestressed concrete structures, the effective prestressing force of tendon is basically most important item for structural safety and serviceability. The frictional loss is one of the major items for determinating the effective prestressing force and depend on the construction accuracy of the structures. In this thesis, it will be analyzed and found through measured hydraulic jack pressure, tendon elongation and prestressing control system that the tendancy of apparent curvature friction coefficient, the ratio of jacking force and required prestressing force, the ratio of initial jacking force and required prestressing force and compatibility of specified friction loss coefficient. The specified control limit for curvature friction coefficient of prestressing control system is about 0.25 and wobble friction coefficient 0.005. Thus, the control limit should be modified according to changed vale of friction coefficient.

  • The current study is a part of series of research about the evaluation method of the unbonded tendon stress in prestressed concrete member at flexural failure. As the experimental study, a test program with 14 beams and slabs was planed to identify the contribution of each important variable. The variables are (1) the effective prestress, (2) the concrete strength, (3) the amount of tendons (4) the amount of bonded reinforcements, (5) the loading type, (6) the span/depth ratio. It was found that the tendon stress increment decreases as the effective prestress increases. Also, the contributions of concrete strength, amount of tendons, bonded reinforcements, and loading type were observed to affect on tendon stresses. However, the tendon stress increments were minimal at high values of span/depth in contrast with the ACI Code.

  • Based on the energy method considering the second order effects, the natural frequencies of externally prestressed simply supported beam and the compression softening effect of external prestress force were analyzed. It is concluded that the compression softening effect depends on the loss of external tendon eccentricity. As the number of deviators increases from zero to a large number, the compression softening effect of external prestress force decreases from the effect of axial compression to almost zero, which is consistent with the conclusion mathematically rigorously proven. The frequencies calculated by the energy method conform well to the frequencies by FEM which can simulate the frictionless slide between the external tendon and deviator, the accuracy of the energy method is validated. The calculation results show that the compression softening effect of external prestress force is negligible for the beam with 2 or more deviators due to slight loss of external tendon eccentricity. As the eccentricity and area of tendon increase, the first natural frequency of the simply supported beams noticeably increases, however the effect of the external tendon on other frequencies is negligible.
