  • This paper is a part of research series for the verification of the proposed Moon/Lim design equation. An analytical study was performed to examine the relation between the flexural behavior and the unbonded tendon stress of PSC members. The strain compatibility assumption was used in this study since previous studies showed that the stress variations of tendon had a close relation with the member displacements. The proposed equation has been developed with the same assumption of strain compatibility. Therefore the analytical procedure with the strain compatibility assumption was developed to compute the member displacements of previous tests. Then the analytical results were compared with tests results. The comparison showed that the strain compatibility assumption can be properly applicable to the design equation. Based on the analytical results, the relation between the tendon stress and the member flexural behavior at ultimate was examined. A parametric study also carried out with regard to the member displacements. As results, the parameters used for the proposed equation were proven to be proper for the computation of tendon stress.

  • The 1st and 2nd tension forces of the PSSC(Prestressed Steel and Concrete) girder constructed with commercial rolling beams and concrete are optimally designed. The design variables are the 1st and 2nd tension forces due to multi-step prestressing and live load. The objective function is set to the maximum live load. Design conditions are allowable stress at the top and bottom of slab, beam and infilled concrete due to a construction step. An Optimization of Matlab based program Is developed. The results show that the tendon position and concrete compression strength etc are important.

  • The uniform state of prestress in a fully prestressed concrete members shows reductions of more than half of the initial prestress in the construction and coupling joint vicinity. Especially, at a zone x/d=0.2 above the construction joint where at the edge of the member, a quite localized reduced stress state of 1/3 of uniform stress is encountered. Five full-scale test specimens were segmentally constructed and post-tensioned and analytic models is used to verify and validate measured test results. The encountered highly nonuniform stress/strain state in the coupling joint vicinity requires special design consideration for the successful application of tendon couplers.

  • In recent years, the construction methods of precast prestressed concrete beam bridges by using tendon have been increasingly proposed. The properties of flexural tensile strength between precast prestressed concrete beam and cast-in-place concrete is an important factor that affects the structural performance. This paper aims at evaluating the tensile strength between old and new concrete. Tensile strength gain, with age after placing new concrete was evaluated. Test results show that the tensile strength between old and new concrete is much smaller than that of monolithic concrete. Also, it is shown that the curing condition of concrete has the tremendous effect on tensile strength.

  • The design of anchorage zone in prestressed concrete cable stayed bridges is very important area due to the more accurate analysis is needed to estimate the behavior. In the study, since the cable anchorage zone in the prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge is subject to a large amount of concentrated tendon forces, it shows very complicated stress distributions and causes a serious local cracks. Accordingly, It is necessary to investigate the parameters of affecting the stress distribution, such as the cable inclination, the position of anchor plate, the modeling method and the three dimensional effect. The tensile stress distribution of anchorage zone is compared to the actual design condition by varing the stiffness of spring element in the local modeling and an appropriate position of anchor plate is determined. These results would be elementary data to the stress state of anchorage zone and more efficient design.

  • In this paper, a new approach for cable layout design of pre-stressed concrete slabs is presented. To account the cable profile accurately, it is modelled by B-spline. Using the convex hull property of the B-spline, an efficient algorithm has been developed to obtain the cable layout for pre-stressed concrete slabs. For finite element computations, tendon and concrete are modelled by 3 noded bar and 20 noded brick elements respectively. The cable concrete interactions are precisely accounted using vector calculus formulae. Using the proposed technique a two way prestressed concrete slab has been successfully designed considering several design criteria.

  • The research on the effect of the prestressing force on the frequency of PSC(Prestressed Concrete beam) has been conducted theoretically and experimentally, and a few theory has been presented. However, the presented theories show no agreement in predicting the effect of the prestressing force. In this paper, the theories on the effect of the prestressing force on the frequency of PSC beam are presented and evaluated using the experimental result. To obtain the experimental result, two PSC beam specimens were manufactured, and the modal test and analysis were performed. The modal analysis results revealed that the prestressing force increased the natural frequency of the PSC beam. Comparing predicted results using existing theories show that Kim's model, which substitutes the prestressing tendon with the equivalent beam, gives the best prediction result.

  • A new type of bridge superstructures referred to as Steel-confined Prestressed Concrete Girder (SCP Girder) was developed, which is composed of concrete, steel plate, and prestressing tendon. The girder may maximize structural advantages of these components : thus, long span bridges with low height girder may be constructed. For the effective design and fabrication of the girder, the design software program was developed and the process of fabrication established. The experimental girder designed using the program was manufactured in actual size to confirm the fabric ability of the girder. Propriety of design, structural safety, and applicability of the girder were verified through the load test.

  • Current engineering practice in determining sectional dimensions of prestressed concrete (PSC) girders for bridges is primarily based on the code-specified allowable concrete stresses at different loading stages. It is customary that tendons and sectional dimensions are calibrated and tendon forces are applied at once at the initial stage to keep the subsequent stresses occurring at different loading stages within the allowable stresses. This traditional tensioning method, however, usually results in a too conservative sectional depth in view of ultimate capacity of a girder. A new design method which can realize the reduction of sectional depth of PSC girders is theoretically suggested in this study. Tendons are tensioned twice at different loading stages: the initial stage and the stage after fresh slab concrete is cast. It can be shown that according to this technique, sectional depth can be significantly reduced and larger span can be realized compared to traditional ones. Parametric studies are performed with due considerations given to its practical applications.

  • A new type of girder named as Steel-Confined Prestressed Concrete Girder(SCP Girder) has been developed, which is composed of concrete, steel plate, and prestressing tendon. This girder may maximize structural advantages of these components, therefore it can be used to construct the middle or long span bridge with low-height girder. To verify the propriety of design, structural safety, and applicability of this girder, static load test was carried out. In this study, a design program was developed for practical design of railway bridge using SCP girder. And to verify the applicability of SCP girder to railway bridge, structural performance and economic efficiency based on the construction cost were compared with conventional railway bridges.
