  • High intensity metal halide discharge lamp performance, specifically the generated luminous flux and light color content, depends critically on the arc tube design. Factors influencing the design and consequent lamp efficacy include : lamp size, geometry, arc tube composition, fill chemistry, electrode design and excitation modes. Shaping of Polycrystalline Alumina(PCA) can be realized by conventional ceramic processes. Several processes are applied nowadays. Well-known in the ceramic high pressure field for decades are the pressing and the extrusion method. Newly developed slurry and precious forming technologies give the one-body seamless tubes, which improve thickness uniformity and lighting performance. Now, we reported some optical properties with different arc tube structures of ceramic metal halide lamps.

  • Damage assessment for buried structures against an internal blast is conducted by considering the soil-structure interaction. The structural element under analysis is assumed to be rigid-plastic and simply-supported at both ends. Shear failure, bending failure and combined failure modes are included based on five possible transverse velocity profiles. The maximum deflections with respect to shear and bending failure are derived respectively by employing proper failure criteria of the structural element. Pressure-Impulse diagrams to assess damage of the buried structures are subsequently developed. Comparisons have been done to evaluate the influences of the soil-structure interaction and the shear-to-bending strength ratio of the structural element. A case study for a buried reinforced concrete structure has been conducted to show the applicability of the proposed damage assessment method.

  • This study investigates the behavior of precast concrete cantilever wall systems with new vertical connections under cyclic loading. C-type steel connections for PC wall systems are proposed for the transfer of bending moments between walls in the vertical direction, whereas a shear key in the center of the wall is prepared to transfer shear forces by bearing pressure. The proposed connections are assembled easily because the directions of the slots are different at the edges of the walls. Structural performance characteristics such as the strength, ductility, and failure modes of test specimens were investigated. The longitudinal reinforcing steel bars, which are connected to the C-type connections, yielded first. Ultimate deformation was terminated owing to premature failure of the connections. The strength and deformation obtained from the cross-sectional analysis were generally similar to experimental data.

  • A new flow mode of ER fluid available for controlling the damping force by using DME(Discrete Multi-Electrode) is presented in this study. Various characteristics about the flow of ER fluid through the experiment of ER cluster behavior visualization can be assumed. The pressure in electrode length and voltage division mode is measured. An actuator with a damping effect through DME ER damper will be developed. This damper controls the damping force by using the displacement and velocity of the plant which consists of the various electrode length and voltage modes without a controller in the real system.

  • An extension of the finite element method to the stability analysis of shells of revolution under static axisymmetric loading is presented in this paper. A systematic procedure for the formulation of the problem is based upon the principle of virtual work. This procedure results in an eigenvalue problem. For solution, the shell of revolution is discretized into a series of conical frusta. The buckling mode in the circumferential direction is assumed, this assumption makes the problem economical for the computing time. The present method is applied to a number of shells of revolution, under axial compression or lateral pressure, and comparision are made with other theoretical results. The results show good agreement each other. The effects of aspect ratio, boundary conditions and buckling modes on the buckling strength of shells of revolution are studied. Also the optimum shape of cylindrical shell under uniform axial compression is obtained from the view point of structural stability.

  • In this paper are presented main power and gasdynamic characteristics of hypersonic test cell of Research Test Center (RTC) of Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM). The distributions of temperature and Mach number at the exit of the aerodynamic nozzle of test cell are received at simulation conditions of flight at Mf=6. Values of available pressure difference and throttling characteristics for various operational modes of test cell, including the loading of working section by Scramjet model without the heating of air at entrance to the aerodynamic nozzle and with the heating of air, are received too.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the secondary buckling behaviour and mode-coupling of spherical caps under uniformly external pressure. The analysis makes use of a rotational finite shell element on the basis of strain-displacement relations according to Koiter's shell theory (Small Finite Deflections). The post-buckling behaviours after a bifurcation point are analyzed precisely by considering multi-mode coupling between several higher order harmonic wave numbers: and on the way of post-buckling path the positive definiteness of incremental stiffness matrix of uncoupled modes is examined step by step. The secondary buckling point that has zero eigen-value of incremental stiffness matrix and the corresponding secondary mode are obtained, moreover, the secondary post-buckling path is traced.

  • In this study, cantilever cylindrical shells with edge-stiffeners are analyzed. A versatile 4-node flat shell element which is useful for the analysis of shell structures is used. An improved flat shell element is established by the combined use of the addition of non-conforming displacement modes and the substitute shear strain fields. Three models by load conditions are considered. Model A, B and C are loaded by point load at the free edge, line load and external pressure respectively. A various parameter examples are presented to obtain proper stiffened length and stiffened thickness of edge-stiffeners. It is shown that the thickness of shell can be reduced more than 50% for Model A, about $20{\sim}30%$ for Model B by appropriate edge-stiffeners.

  • Thermodynamic and economic analyses of various types of gas turbine combined cycle power plants have been performed to establish criteria for optimization of power plants. The concept of efficiency, in terms of the difference in energy levels of electricity and heat, was introduced. The efficiency of power and heat generation by power plants with other purposes was estimated, and power generation costs were figured out for various types of combined heat and power plants(i.e., fired and unfired, condensing and non-condensing modes, single or double pressure HRSG).

  • This paper reviews design validity before manufacturing HCVT prototype through simulation. The component part is being devided, modeled and checked if it works well to an designer's original intent about some active modes. Also, the dynamic characteristic is examined how it changes according to alteration of pressure, friction and leak rate. Finally, HCVT design plan is being confirmed if it could be materialized through those analysis.
