  • This study aims to provide a fundamental data for directly injected hydrogen fuel engines. Spray, ignition and combustion characteristics of hydrogen were studied using constant volume chamber. For spray visualization, hydrogen was vertically injected into a combustion chamber at various condition, for example, injection pressure, ambient pressure. And an argon laser was used for the shadowgraph photography by applying optical method. Also, to investigate heat-release rate and flame propagations, spark was ignited on hydrogen injected at the different time after injection and the duration of injection was also changed. Processes of ignition and combustion were analyzed by heat-release rate calculated by pressure history and were observed by shadowgraph photography The results gave much knowledge of spray, ignition and combustion characteristics of hydrogen.

  • Thermoplastic elastomer(TPE) can be recycled and molded such as commercial thermoplastic. Therefore TPE has being widely applied on automobile, household and etc. in these days. This study shows the variation of mechanical properties and shrinkage on TPE moldings for variation of injection molding conditions such as injection pressure, holding pressure, melt temperature, mold temperature and etc. Mechanical properties in relation to tensile strength, hardness and shrinkage in connection with precision dimension of part are investigated. The tensile strength and shrinkage of the experimental TPEs are mainly influenced by injection pressure and melt temperature. All injection molding conditions scarcely affect on hardness. To verify the variation of tensile strength and shrinkage, morphology of TPE molding was scanned by the SEM. The morphology showed that as the melt temperature increased, the rubber particles on the TPE became smaller and widely were dispersed. This behavior of rubber particles influenced on the increase of tensile strength.

  • As part of an evaluation for an in-vessel severe accident management strategy, a coolant injection into the reactor vessel under depressurization of the reactor coolant system (RCS) has been evaluated in detail using the SCDAP/RELAP5 computer code. A high-pressure sequence of a small break loss of coolant accident (SBLOCA) has been analyzed in the Optimized Power Reactor (OPR) 1000. The SCDAP/RELAP5 results have shown that safety injection timing and capacity with RCS depressurization timing and capacity are very effective on the reactor vessel failure during a severe accident. Only one train operation of the high pressure safety injection (HPSI) for 30,000 seconds with RCS depressurization prevents failure of the reactor vessel. In this case, the operation of only the low pressure safety injection (LPSI) without a HPSI does not prevent failure of the reactor vessel.

  • Single flighted screw extrusion is the most cost effective method for the production of film, sheet, pipe and the fundamental step in other processes including blow molding and injection molding. The temperature of polymer melts and injection pressure play a very important role in the injection molding machine. Thermal distortion and displacement of screw by temperature difference and injection pressure difference cause adhesive wear by metal-to-metal contact. In this paper we analyze thermal distortion and stress of screw includes pressure and temperature distributions by finite element analysis to understand dynamic characteristics of screw.

  • It has been observed in experiments that combustion instability of low frequency (${\sim}$ 10Hz) results form the modulation of equivalence ratio at fuel injection hole when a pressure fluctuation propagates upwards along the channel of the burner under an unchoked fuel flow condition. In this study, a commercial program was used to determine how the fuel flow rate changed with respect to the pressure, velocity of the fuel flow and the mass fraction in a choked and an unchoked condition. The calculation focus on the upstream of the dump plane to know how the forced pressure with the fuel injection conditions affects the modulation of the equivalence ratio. Therefore, it is found that pressure fluctuation leads to oscillation of mass flow rate and then results in equivalence ratio modulation under the unchoked fuel flow condition.

  • The characteristics of liquefied butane spray are expected to be different from conventional diesel fuel spray, because a kind of flash boiling spray is expected when the back pressure is below the saturation vapor pressure of the butane(0.23MPa at $25^{\circ}C$). An accumulator type pintle injector and its fuel delivery system has been simulated in ruder to give injection pressure, needle lift and rate of fuel injected. The governing equation were solved by finite difference metho. The injection duration was controlled by solenoid valve. Spray behaviors such as a transient spray tip penetration, spray angle and SMD were calculated based on the empirical correlations in case that the back pressure is both above the vapor pressure of the butane and below that of butane. When the back preassure is below the vapor pressure of the fuel, conventional correlation is modified to represent the effect of flash boiling.

  • In this study, it was grasped to the flow characteristics of injection nozzle installed in high pressure holder for improving productivity. Chip curling occurred during cutting process for difficult-to-cut material detracts product qualities and productivity. Among of method preventing the phenomenon, high pressure injecting cutting oil is an alterative. In this study, the optimal nozzle was designed by CFD method and it was conducted to analyse on the effect of high pressure injection on chip shape generated during cutting process and wear of insert by experimental method. As the result, it could be confirmed that high pressure injection is favorable for preventing chip curling and insert from wearing.

  • In this research, the tensile strength of molded parts and pressure distribution were analyzed to study the cavity filling stage and packing stage in injection molding. The measurement of cavity pressure was obtained by a data acquisition system with the installation of transducers in the cavity. Molded parts were tested by a universal testing machine to obtain the tensile strength. For the experimental work, the tensile strength of molded parts increased with longer packing time and exact freezing time of the gate was obtained by a cavity pressure curve. In addition, the effect of packing did not occur and tensile strength was almost constant after early 1.5 sec of the freezing time of gate. Density tended to be higher about 0.2% due to a larger degree of mold temperature and melt temperature. Also, changing pressure in the cavity was effectively sensed. Thereafter, the possibility of the development of pattern recognition expert system was confirmed on the basis of the experimental results.

  • Since the rate and completeness of combustion in direct injection engines were controlled by the characteristics of gas flow fields and sprays, an understanding of those was essential to the design of the direct injection engines. In this study the numerical simulations of injection pressure effects on the characteristics of gas flow fields and sprays were preformed using the spray model that could predict the interactions between gas fields and spray droplets. The governing equations were discretized by the finite volume method and the modified k-.epsilon. model which included the compressibility effects due to the compression/expansion of piston was used. The results of the numerical calculation of the spray characteristics in the quiescent environment were compared with the experimental data. There were good agreements between the results of calculation and the experimental data, except in the early stages of the spray. In the motoring condition, the results showed that a substantial air entrainment into the spray volume was emerged and hence the squish motion was relatively unimportant during the fuel injection periods. It was found that as the injection pressure increased, the evaporation rate of droplets was decreased due to the narrow width of spray and the increased number of droplets impinged on the bottom of the piston bowl.

  • The amount of shrinkage of injection molded parts is different from operational conditions of injection molding such as injection temperature, injection pressure and mold temperature, and mold design such as gate size. It also varies depending on the presence of crystalline structure in resins. In this study, part shrinkage was investigated for various operational conditions and resins. Poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) for crystalline polymer, and polycarbonate (PC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) for amorphous polymers were used. Crystall me polymer showed higher part shrinkage by about three times than that of amorphous polymers. Part shrinkage increased as melt and molt temperatures increased, and injection pressure decreased. Part shrinkage decreased as gate size increased since the pressure delivery is mush easier for larger gate sizes. Part shrinkage at the position close to the gate was larger than that or the position far from gate. This phenomenon might be occur by difference of residual stress.
