  • The densification behaviors of copper powder under high temperature processing were investigated. Experimental data were obtained for copper powder under hot isostatic pressing, hot pressing and uniaxial compression. Finite element calculations from the constitutive models by McMeeking and co-workers were compared with the experimental data, The agreements between experimental data and theoretical calculations are reasonably good when hydrostatic stress is dominant, but not as good then deviatoric stress increases.

  • A simple cold pressing procedure which allows shear deformations on sheet metals is proposed by designing dies with grooves and applied to aluminum 3003 sheets. shear deformation led to the formation of preferred orientation along <100>//RD, and the effect of initial tortures on the formation of shear textures was also studied Rectangular shaped dislocation cells formed in the deformed microstructure and boundaries of dislocation cells gradually rounded with the increased plastic strain. Upon subsequent annealing textures inherited deformation textures. Recrystallized grains consisted of a large number of fully recovered subgrains with well defined boundaries which persisted even after annealing at a higher temperature.

  • In this study, bottom-up type powder processing and top-down type SPD (severe plastic deformation) approaches were combined in order to achieve full density of 1 vol.% carbon nanotube (CNT)-metal matrix composites with superior mechanical properties by improved particle bonding and least grain growth, which were considered as a bottle neck of the bottom-up method using the conventional powder metallurgy of compaction and sintering. ECAP (equal channel angular pressing), the most promising method in SPD, was used for the CNT-Cu powder consolidation. The powder ECAP processing with 1, 2, 4 and 8 route C passes was conducted at room temperature. It was found by mechanical testing of the consolidated 1 vol.% CNT-Cu that high mechanical strength could be achieved effectively as a result of the Cu matrix strengthening and improved particle bonding during ECAP. The ECAP processing of powders is a viable method to achieve fully density CNT-Cu nanocomposites.

  • The objective of the current investigation is to establish techniques in micro pattern forming operations of polymeric circular tubes by using hydrostatic pressing. This method was developed and successfully applied to the micro pattern forming on polymeric plates. The key idea of the new technique is to pressurize multiple vacuum-packed substrate-mold stacks above the glass transition temperature of the polymeric substrates. The new process is thought to be a promising micro-pattern fabrication technique for two reasons; first, (hydro-) isostatic pressing ensures a uniform micro-pattern replicating condition regardless of the substrate area and thickness. Second, multiple curved substrates can be patterned at the same time. With the prototype forming machine for the new process, micro prismatic array patterns, 25um in height and 90 degrees in apex angle, were successfully made on the PMMA circular tubes with diameters of 5~40mm. These results show that this process can be also used in the micro pattern forming process on curved plates such as circular tube.

  • In the present study, the effect of TiB2 addition on the sintering behavior of ZrB2 ceramics was studied with hot pressing under Ar atmosphere. Hot pressing experiments were carried out in graphite dies at the 1$700^{\circ}C$, 180$0^{\circ}C$ under Ar atmosphere. The sintering density increased with increasing TiB2 contents. With the addition of 10wt% TiB2 almost theoretical density could be achieved by hot-pressing at 180$0^{\circ}C$. Zr-Ti-Fe-B compound in liquid phase was observed from the EDS and WDS analysis. It was considered that sinterability was enhanced due to the mass transfer through liquid phase formed at the sintering temperature. In addition of TiB2, transition metal of groups IV, substitutional solid solution could be formed.

  • Capsule free hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) of 12 mol% $CeO_2-88 mo% ZrO_2 (12CeO_2-88ZrO_2)$ powder was conducted at 1100~$1200^{\circ}C$ using the powder crystallized in supercritical methanol followed by supercritical drying. Porous $12CeO_2-88ZrO_2$ ceramics with ~35% open porosity, micropore diameter of ~23 nm and a narrow pore size distribution were fabricated by capsule free hot isostatic pressing at $1100^{\circ}C$. The porosity increased with decrease in HIPing temperature and was accompanied by a steady decrease in fracture strength.

  • The structural change of Nafion polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) induced by hot-pressing, which is one of the representative procedures for preparing membrane-electrode-assembly for low temperature fuel cells, was investigated by $^2H$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The hydrophilic channels were asymmetrically flattened and more aligned in the membrane plane than along the hot-pressing direction. The average O-$^2H$ director of $^2H_2O$ in polymer electrolyte membrane was employed to extract the structural information from the $^2H$ NMR peak splitting data. The dependence of $^2H$ NMR data on water contents was systematically analyzed for the first time. The approach presented here can be used to understand the chemicals' behavior in nano-spaces, especially those reshaping and functioning interactively with the chemicals in the wet and/or mixed state.

  • In this Part 2, the grain growth processes of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics is numerically simulated using Monte Carlo method (MCM) and finite element method (FEM) and the pore sizes are analyzed. As the green ceramics whose thermal conductivities in high temperatures are generally low are sintered by the plasma heat and are rapidly cooled, the grain growth of the sintered body in the center is different from that in the outer. Also, even in the same sintering temperature, the pore size differs according to the pressing pressure. In order to prove the difference, the temperature distribution of the sintered body was analyzed using the finite element method and then the grain growth process associated with pressing pressures and relative densities was simulated using Monte Carlo method.

  • Reactive processing, such as reactive hot pressing (RHP) and reactive spark plasma sintering (R-SPS), is effective densification method to prepare $ZrB_2$-based ultra high temperature ceramics (UHTCs). The present paper reviewed some typical reactive processing of $ZrB_2$-based UHTCs. All the reactions from the starting materials in the reactive processing are thermodynamically favorable, which generate enough energy and driving force for the densification of the final products under a relatively low temperature. Besides, compared with non-reactive processing, anisotropic $ZrB_2$ grains, such as $ZrB_2$ platelets, can only be obtained in the reactive processing, resulting in an improvement of the mechanical properties.

  • SiC materials have been extensively studied for high temperature components in advanced energy system and advanced gas turbine because it has excellent high temperature strength, low coefficient of thermal expansion, good resistance to oxidation and good thermal and chemical stability etc. However, the brittle characteristics of SiC such as low fracture toughness and low strain-to fracture still impose a severe limitation on practical applications of SiC materials. For these reasons, SiC/SiC composites can be considered as a promising for various structural materials, because of their good fracture toughness compared with monolithic SiC ceramics. But, high temperature and pressure lead to the degradation of the reinforcing jiber during the hot pressing. Therefore, reduction of sintering temperature and pressure is key requirements for the fabrication of SiC/SiC composites by hot pressing method. In the present work, monolithic Liquid Phase Sintered SiC (LPS-SiC) was fabricated by hot pressing method in Ar atmosphere at $1800^{\circ}C$ under 20MPa using $Al_2O_3,\;Y_2O_3\;and\;SiO_2$ as sintering additives in order to low sintering temperature and sintering pressure. The starting powder was high purity $\beta-SiC$ nano-powder with all average particle size of 30mm. The characterization of LPS-SiC was investigated by means of SEM and three point bending test. Base on the composition of sintering additives-, microstructure- and mechanical property correlation, tire compositions of sintering additives are discussed.
