Open Die Forging of the Large Head Forgings for Reactor Vessel (원자로용 대형 헤드 단강품의 자유단조)

  • Reactor Vessel is one of the most important structural parts of nuclear power plant. It is manufactured by various steel forgings such as shell, head and transition ring. Head forgings have been made by open die forging process. After steel melting and ingot making, open die forging has been carried out to get a good quality which means high soundness and homogeniety of the steel forgings by using high capacity hydraulic press. This paper introduced the open die forging process and manufacturing experience of large head forgings which can be used for the reactor vessel of 1,000MW nuclear power plant.

  • In April 2010, the die and mould grand prix for university student was held in Osaka as a special event of Inter Mold Japan. The students from Korea, China, and Japan participated to demonstrate the design and manufacturing skill of die and mould. Based on the given product drawing of Test Work, progressive die should be designed and manufactured. Also, production of Test Work should be carried out. This study had been conducted to participate in the grand prix and to learn practical knowledge and experience from real die design and making. Test Work is made of SPCC and includes piercing, blanking, deep drawing and burring. From the analysis of product drawing, process planning and die design was carried out. Progressive die for Test Work was manufactured using CNC milling, grinding, wire-cutting and polishing. The production was successfully completed using mechanical press and product showed very good accuracy satisfying all dimensional tolerances.

  • Large tubesheet forgings of the steam generator for the 1,400MW nuclear power plant has been developed. Steam Generator is one of the most important structural part for nuclear power plant. It is manufactured by various steel forgings such as shell, head, torus and tubesheet. These steel forgings have been made by open die forging process. After steel melting and ingot making, open die forging has been carried out to get a good quality which means high soundness and homogeniety of the steel forgings by using high capacity hydraulic press. This paper introduced the forging process development and manufacturing experience of large tubesheet forgings which will be used for the steam generator of 1,400MW nuclear power plant.

  • The sheet metal forming proceccing is very important and indispensable in the automotive industry because the accuracy of prsee worked parts is directly related to the automotive quality. But when making mold it is difficult and expensive to modify mold. mold design technology is a critical technology in press plastic working. When design the mold there are lots of variables in press plastic working according to worked material, mold materials, conditions of heat treatment, clearance and so on. Abrasion of mold depends on these kind of conditions and sheared surface which is crucial for quality of product also depends on them. In this study, we conduct research on abrasion loss of mold according to 8, 10 and 12% of clearance for thickness of 1.0mm of worked material out of mold design variables of the products whose worked materials are high carbon steel and carbon tool steel by a practical experiment and perform a comparative evaluation of difference of abrasion loss mold with the alloy tool steel (STD11) and Tungsten Carbide (WC).

  • It has been known that the life time of cold forging dies is shorten by the cracks and wear produced during the operation. Thus it is required to mak the same new one too often, At this time of making new ont the cutting work and electical discharge machining were mormally used. But the precision of product is declined in every times of making the mew dies due to the diffefence in dimensional accuracy arised from the electical discharge machining. Especially it can't meet the delivery date because the production was delayed for making another die. Furthemore it has the problem of increasing the production cost. Therfore inthis study we tried to solve these problems using the hobbing method instead of electical discharge machining.

  • Large-scale low-alloy steel shafts, used in the manufacture of steam turbine, are produced by ingot making, forging and heat treatemtn processes. The numerical analysis techniques are introduced to analyze and design the working conditions in each process. The solidification of a steel ingot is studied through the finite element method. The open die press forging and quenching process are simulated by viscoplastic and elastic-plastic finite element method, respectively. Thus numerical analysis techniques are very useful tools to study favorable working conditions for better and more desirable product quality.

  • 0.5mm thick steel is used to manufacture nail files. The first process is blanking and the second process is making about 300 holes of 0.8-l.0mm in diameter. This process depends mainly on etching which takes 33% of manufacturing cost and it can make manufacturing cost rise. The residual etching reagent is not environmentally friendly and the steel material is apt to rust as well. To solve these problems, researches on the following subjects are performed: proper material to prevent from rusting and strip layout strategies in stamping to replace etching process with press process which makes use of die. And new quill type punch is developed to replace the regular standard punch, one of the die parts, which frequently get broken while working. And these researches and developments lead to develop a progressive perforating die.

  • Forming more than two parts of sheet metal in a single stamping operation lowers production costs, reduces weight, and heightens dimensional accuracy. The tailored blank (TB) is a laser-welded or mash-seam-welded sheet metal with different thicknesses, different strengths, or different coatings. Recently, automotive manufacturers have been interested in tailored blanks because of their desire to improve the rigidity, weight reduction, crash durability, and cost savings. Therefore the application to auto-bodies has increased. However, as tailored blanks do not behave like un-welded blanks in press forming operations, stamping engineers no longer rely on conventional forming techniques. Field try-outs are very important manufacturing processes for an economic die-making. In the field try-outs, the rounded geometries of tool and the drawbead shape and size in die face are generally modified when the forming defects can not be removed by the adjustment of forming process parameters. In this study, the field try-outs of tailored door inner panel are introduced and evaluated. The behaviours of laser tailored blank associated with different thickness combinations in the forming process of door inner panel are described focusing on terms of experimental investigations on the formability.
