Press forming of magnesium alloy sheet is conducted at elevated temperatures to improve the press formability due to its low formability at room temperature. At elevated temperatures, magnesium alloy sheet formability is known to be very sensitive to the strain rate. In this paper, warm deep drawing tests of magnesium alloy AZ31 sheet was conducted under double forming velocity as well as single forming velocity to examine the formability change by forming velocity profile. The observed formability improvement by double forming velocity was analyzed by using the finite element analysis.
The present research deals with structural analysis and optimal design of the heating drum of a hot-rolling press for medium density fiberboard. Stress concentration in the journal of the heating drum is analyzed by the submodel technique of the finite element method. The fatigue life under operating conditions is analyzed and evaluated by the stress-life theory. Shape optimal design problems, to minimize the maximum stress occurring in the journal, are formulated and shape parameters of the corner fillets of the journal are defined as the design variables. The problems are solved by the numerical optimization method and optimal shapes are found. The optimal designs are shown to be reliable in terms of the maximum stress and the fatigue life.
Most important for meaningful forging simulation is the determination of correct process parameters. In addition a check and a compensation of the data base after the comparison between experiments and the computation of the developed process is necessary. The existence of a systematic process parameter data bank for special kinds of forming process in combination with forging specific simulation lifts the value of the products. Finite volume method is applied to simulate the hot forging process to investigate the defects for the automobile product. Three typical forging processes have been investigated; Extrusion by hydrolic press, Upsetting by crank press and Inclined upsetting by hammer press. Simulated result has compared with the experiment and provided a direction to improve the process.
Despite of outstanding optical performance of glass lens, glass lens have not been widely used because of poor productivity and high cost due to manufacturing process i.e. grinding, polishing. However, press-forming method of glass lens overcomes this disadvantage because of mass production. When glass lens is produced by press-forming method using closed die, it is needed that the volume of glass lens preform precisely measured in order to prevent incomplete products and to increase in life of die. The present paper shows the shortcoming of forming process with closed die, and performs FEM simulation of forming process with open die in order to overcome this shortcoming. The design parameter of open die is selected in standard of assembly with optical module and maintenance of optical performance. FEM simulation is carried out with selected parameter of open die and two basic preform. According to distribution of effective strain in glass lens, optical property of glass lens formed at each set of die and preform is compared.
The heat transfer characteristics between die and sheet and die and coolant are important parameters in hot press forming process. The determination of the quenching time that guarantees full martensitic transformation requires proper understanding of these heat transfer characteristics. The contact area changes drastically during the quenching process due to volume changes of both die and sheet by temperature drop as well as phase transformation. Several types of modeling techniques are tested in order to select the most suitable. The effect of quenching time as well as die heat conductivity on martensitic transformation is investigated and predictions are compared to experimental results.
The piercing and blanking of thin sheet metal working is specified division in press die design and making. In order to prevent the detects, the optimum design of the production part, strip process layout, die design, die making and try out etc. are necessary the analysis of effective factors. For example, theory and practice of metal shearing process and its phenomena, die structure, machine tool working for die making, die materials and its heat treatment, metal working in industrial and its know how etc. In this study, we analyzed whole of data base, theoretical back ground of metal working process, and then performed the progressive die tryout with the screw press. This study regards to the aim of small quantity of production parts press working. Part 1 of this study reveals with production part and strip process layout design.
The NDT(Non-Destructive Testing) is valid for the defect detection of rolling stocks because it can be used to detect the defect in many invisible parts. For example, fatigue cracks are initiated in press fit parts that suffer from fretting fatigue damage such as the wheel seat and the NDT technique can detect those cracks. But the conventional ICFPD method can not apply to detect such cracks in press fit parts of the axle by some technical problems. In this study, we have introduced the new concept ICFPD method that can be applied in press fit parts of the axle. And we have shown the basic techniques of FEM about the new concept ICFPD method.
In the recent years, the production of light-weight products has become important because of increasing demands for the energy savings through weight reduction. Therefore the advanced manufacturing technology with Al alloy is continuously required in many industrial fields. Bending characteristics of Al rectangular tube with hollow and solid section has been analyzed by FE analysis in press bending with wing-die. Bending stress is affected by punch stroke and rotation of wing-die. There were different sectional sagging characteristics between the solid rectangle section and the hollow rectangle section.
In order to overcome drawbacks of the advanced high strength steel such as inferior formability and large springback, the hot press forming process(HPF) has been being applied for forming of automotive sheet parts. Good formability and dimensional accuracy without springback as well as good crash performance of final products are the advantages of the HPF process. In this work, a method to characterize the mechanical properties of the HPF steel was developed based on the simple tension test at high temperatures and its finite element analysis, while it was applied to obtain strain rate and temperature dependent flow curves of the HPF steel. The final flow curves were represented by utilizing the Johnson-Cook type equation both in uniform and post-uniform deformation regions.
