  • This study focuses on the amplitude dependency of damping of tall structures by the random decrement technique (RDT). Many researchers have adopted RDT to establish the amplitude dependency of damping ratios in super-tall buildings under strong wind loads. In this study, a series of simulated examples were analyzed to examine the reliability of this method. Results show that damping ratios increase as vibration amplitudes increase in several cases; however, the damping ratios in the simulated signals were preset as constants. This finding reveals that this method and the derived amplitude-dependent damping ratio characteristics are unreliable. Moreover, this method would obviously yield misleading results if the simulated signals contain Gaussian white noise. Full-scale measurements on a super-tall building were conducted during four typhoons, and the recorded data were analyzed to observe the amplitude dependency of damping ratio. Relatively wide scatter is observed in the resulting damping ratios, and the damping ratios do not appear to have an obvious nonlinear relationship with vibration amplitude. Numerical simulation and field measurement results indicate that the widely-used method for establishing the amplitude-dependent damping characteristics of super-tall buildings and the conclusions derived from it might be questionable at the least. More field-measured data must be collected under strong wind loads, and the damping characteristics of super-tall buildings should be investigated further.

  • The TDCSA(Time Delay Control with Switching Action) method, which consists of Time Delay Control(TDC) and a switching action of sliding mode control(SMC), has been proposed as a promising technique in the robust control area, where the plant has unknown dynamics with parameter variations and substantial disturbances are preset. When TDCSA is applied to the plant with saturation nonlinearity, however, the so-called windup phenomena are observed to arise, causing excessive overshoot and instability. The integral element of TDCSA and the saturation element of a plant cause the windup phenomena. There are two integral effects in TDCSA. One is the integral effect occurred by time delay estimation of TDC. Other is the integral term of an integral sliding surface. In order to solve this problem, we have proposed an anti-windup scheme method for TDCSA. The stability of the overall system has been proved for a class of nonlinear system. Experiment results show that the proposed method overcomes the windup problem of the TDCSA.

  • In a switched reluctance motor drive, it is important to synchronize the stator phase excitation with the rotor position, Therefore the position of rotor is an essential information. Although high resolution optical encoder/resolvers we used to provide a precise position information, these sensors are expensive. And switching angles synchronizing using sensorless technique has some problems like a reliability and fluctuating of the preset value in the high-speed region, which is caused by the sampling period of the microprocessor. In this paper, a low cost analog encoder suitable for practical applications is proposed. And the control algorithm to generate switching signals using a simple digital logic is presented. The validity of the proposed analog encoder with a proper logic controller is verified from the experiments.

  • Fast and accurate localization of randomly deployed nodes is required by many applications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, mobile nodes localization in WSNs is more difficult than static nodes localization since the nodes mobility brings more data. In this paper, we propose a Range-based Monte Carlo Box (RMCB) algorithm, which builds upon the Monte Carlo Localization Boxed (MCB) algorithm to improve the localization accuracy. This algorithm utilizes Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) ranging technique to build a sample box and adds a preset error coefficient in sampling and filtering phase to increase the success rate of sampling and accuracy of valid samples. Moreover, simplified Particle Swarm Optimization (sPSO) algorithm is introduced to generate new samples and avoid constantly repeated sampling and filtering process. Simulation results denote that our proposed RMCB algorithm can reduce the location error by 24%, 14% and 14% on average compared to MCB, Range-based Monte Carlo Localization (RMCL) and RSSI Motion Prediction MCB (RMMCB) algorithm respectively and are suitable for high precision required positioning scenes.

  • Augmented reality is a technique for combining virtual images into real life by showing information of virtual 3D objects on top of a real-world environment (Azuma et al., 2001). This study is an augmented reality-based educational content delivery device that receives user input that selects either a preset object or a photographed object for augmented reality-based training; It includes a three-dimensional design generation unit that generates a stereoscopic model of the augmented reality environment from an object, a three-dimensional view of the scene, a disassembly process of the developing road from a three-dimensional model, and a content control unit provided by the user terminal by generating educational content including a three-dimensional model, a scene chart, a scene, a decomposition process, and a coupling process to build a coupling process from the scene to the three-dimensional model in an augmented reality environment. The next study provides a variety of educational content so that children can use AR technology as well as shapes to improve learning effectiveness. We also believe that studies are needed to quantitatively measure the efficacy of which educational content is more effective when utilizing AR technology.

  • In this paper we introduce the correlation-aided distributed sample acquisition (CDSA) scheme for fast cell search in IMT-2000 W-CDMA cellular system. The proposed scheme incorporates the state symbol correlation process into the comparison-correction based synchronization process of the original DSA scheme to enable fast acquisition even under very poor channel environment. for its realization, each mobile station (MS) has to store in its memory a set of state sample sequences. which are determined by the long-period scrambling sequences used in the system and the sampling interval of the state samples. CDSA based cell search is carried out in two stages : First, the MS first acquires the slot timing by using the primary synch code (PSC) and then identifies the igniter code which conveys the state samples of the current cell . Secondly. the MS identifies the scrambling code and frame timing by taking the comparison-correction based synchronization approach and, if the identification is not done satisfactorily within preset time. it initiates the state symbol correlation process which correlates the received symbol sequence with the pre-stored state sample sequences for a successful identification. As the state symbol SNR is relatively high. the state symbol correlation process enables reliable synchronization even in very low chip-SNR environment. Simulation results show that the proposed CDSA scheme outperforms the 3GPP 3-step approach, requiring the signal power of about 7 dB less for achieving the same acquisition time performance in low-SNR environments. Furthermore, it turns out very robust in the typical synchronization environment where large frequency offset exists.

  • One of the deep-running algorithms, CNN's artificial intelligence application uses off-chip memory to store data on the Convolution Layer. DMA can reduce processor load at every data transfer. It can also reduce application performance degradation by varying the order in which data from the Convolution layer is transmitted to the global buffer of the accelerator. For basic layouts with continuous memory addresses, SG-DMA showed about 3.4 times performance improvement in pre-setting DMA compared to using ordinaly DMA, and for Ideal layouts with discontinuous memory addresses, the ordinal DMA was about 1396 cycles faster than SG-DMA. Experiments have shown that a combination of memory data layout and DMA can reduce the DMA preset load by about 86 percent.

  • CCTV(Closed-Circuit Television) is increasingly exposed to CCTV per person as the number of installations increases every year for accident prevention and facility safety. The intelligent video surveillance system technology is attracting attention to the privacy protection of exposed subjects. The intelligent video surveillance system performs a process for the privacy protection so as to perform the action type of the subject and the judgment of the situation in the simple identification of the photographed image data, or to prevent the information, from which the information of the photographed subject is exposed. The proposed technique is applied to the video surveillance system and converts the original image information taken from the video surveillance system into similar image information so that the original image information is not leaked to the outside. In this paper, we propose an image conversion mechanism that inserts a virtual face image that approximates a preset similarity.

  • AlSb is a promising material for optical devices, particularly for high-frequency and nonlinear-optical applications. And AlSb offers significant potential for devices such as quantum-well lasers, laser diodes, and heterojunction bipolar transistors. In this work we study molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of an unstrained AISb film on a GaAs substrate and identify the real-time monitoring capabilities of in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). The samples were fabricated on semi-insulating (0 0 1) GaAs substrates using MBE system. A rotating sample stage ensured uniform film growth. The substrate was first heated to $620^{\circ}C$ under As2 to remove surface oxides. A GaAs buffer layer approximately 200 nm- thick was then grown at $580^{\circ}C$. During the temperature changing process from $580^{\circ}C$ to $530^{\circ}C$, As2 flux is maintained with the shutter for Ga being closed and the reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) pattern remaining at ($2{\times}4$). Upon reaching the preset temperature of $530^{\circ}C$, As shutter was promptly closed with Sb shutter open, resulting in the change of RHEED pattern from ($2{\times}4$) to ($1{\times}3$). This was followed by the growth of AlSb while using a rotating-compensator SE with a charge-coupled-device (CCD) detector to obtain real-time SE spectra from 0.74 to 6.48 eV. Fig. 1 shows the real time measured SE spectra of AlSb on GaAs in growth process. In the Fig. 1 (a), a change of ellipsometric parameter ${\Delta}$ is observed. The ${\Delta}$ is the parameter which contains thickness information of the sample, and it changes in a periodic from 0 to 180o with growth. The significant change of ${\Delta}$ at~0.4 min means that the growth of AlSb on GaAs has been started. Fig. 1b shows the changes of dielectric function with time over the range 0.74~6.48 eV. These changes mean phase transition from pseudodielectric function of GaAs to AlSb at~0.44 min. Fig. 2 shows the observed RHEED patterns in the growth process. The observed RHEED pattern of GaAs is ($2{\times}4$), and the pattern changes into ($1{\times}3$) with starting the growth of AlSb. This means that the RHEED pattern is in agreement with the result of SE measurements. These data show the importance and sensitivity of SE for real-time monitoring for materials growth by MBE. We performed the real-time monitoring of AlSb growth by using SE measurements, and it is good agreement with the results of RHEED pattern. This fact proves the importance and the sensitivity of SE technique for the real-time monitoring of film growth by using ellipsometry. We believe that these results will be useful in a number of contexts including more accurate optical properties for high speed device engineering.

  • Parallel sparse solvers are essential for solving large-scale finite element models. This paper introduces the combination of iterative and direct solver that can be applied efficiently to problems that require continuous solution for a subtly changing sequence of systems of equations. The iterative-direct sparse solver combination technique, proposed and implemented in the parallel sparse solver package, PARDISO, means that iterative sparse solver is applied for the newly updated linear system, but it uses the direct sparse solver's factorization of previous system matrix as a preconditioner. If the solution does not converge until the preset iterations, the solution will be sought by the direct sparse solver, and the last factorization results will be used as a preconditioner for subsequent updated system of equations. In this study, an improved method that sets the maximum number of iterations dynamically at the first Krylov iteration step is proposed and verified thereby enhancing calculation efficiency by the frequency domain analysis.
