Objective: This study aims to examine the level of parental perceptions and practices on parental role responsibilities for children enrolled in preschools and to verify the differences. Methods: A total of 301 parents whose children were attending preschools participated in this study. The collected data were analyzed for frequency, factor analysis, and reliability. In addition, the t-test and the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) were performed. Results: First, there are relatively high levels of perception and practices of parental role responsibilities. Second, parental perception of parental role responsibilities is higher than the level of actual performance. Third, although parents were highly aware of their role responsibilities, there is a great expectation of the role of preschools for the development of the social competence of children. Fourth, parents value the level of practice of role responsibilities in preschools relatively high. Conclusion/Implications: Support systems are needed to reduce the gap between parental perception and practice of their role responsibilities for children enrolled in preschools.
This study investigated conditions and teachers' perceptions of the Christian preschool curriculum in Korea. Participants were 119 teachers in Christian preschools(84 teachers in preschools attached to churches and 35 teachers in non-attached Christian preschools). They responded to a questionnaire developed for the study. Most of the Christian preschools used appropriate educational aims clearly reflecting a Christian world view and the purpose of Christian education. However, teaching methods and instructional media were limited. Type of educational institution, academic background, and years of teaching in Christian institutions affected the results.
The purpose of this study was to compare young children's daily activities in the preschools of two different child-care approaches, i.e., project and traditional approaches. From two preschools. 20 children (M=71.3 months) were observed for 3 consecutive hours. The observers followed the target child, gathering data during 30-second "windows". The window was open every 2 and half minutes. To test the differences between two preschools, phi coefficient tests were used. Results showed that children of traditional approach were more exposed to and engaged in academic activities than those of project approach. In specific, children of traditional approach were more involved in academic and skill/nature lessons. A reverse tendency, however, was found in play activities. Children of project approach were more exposed to and engaged in play activities, especially in play with academic objects. And they were more exposed to conversation with their teacher than their counterparts. Children of project approach also showed more initiatives in their play activities.
This study compared children's daily activities In the preschools of middle-and lower-income communities. 22 children, evenly divided by community and children's gender, were observed for 3 hours on 5 consecutive days. The observers followed the target child, gathering data during 30-second "windows" every 4 1/2 minutes. A total of 750 observations were used in the analyses. The findings show the variation in children's activities as a function of community differences. In the case of academic activities, children of middle-income community were more exposed to and engaged in play with academic objects more than children of the of low-income community. A reverse tendency, however, was found in academic lessons. Children of low-income community were more exposed to work than their counterparts. Children of middle-income community were engaged in child-adult conversation more than those of low-income community. In addition, children of the middle-income community initiated their involvement in play and conversation more than their counterparts, though no difference was found in children's initiation of activities.

Since the importance of early education has been emphasized the Reggio preschools based on the philosophy of open education has been recreated in Korean culture. The Reggio Emilia approach to education is committed to the creation of conditions for learning that will enhance and facilitate children's construction of their own powers of thinking. Dream and hope of children are reflected in every where of the Reggio preschools that great attention is given to the look and feel of the classroom and environment is considered the‘third teacher.’ The results of the kindergarten design as a way of expressing direct, indirect and eclectic images using nature, that natural elements can become the elements of design in any form, and that nature's images are expressed by not only natural and artificial materials. In addition, safety and harmony with adjacent outdoors are also importantly considered in kindergarten design. Even though there were some limitations on this planning, the findings can be utilized as a basis for generating interior environmental recommendations for planning a better quality of kindergarten.
This study aimed to develop and evaluate a sugars intake reduction program (SIRP) that was designed to increase the knowledge, attitude, and skills of Korean children aged 5 years regarding sugars intake reduction. A total of 101 children aged 5~6 years from 6 preschools participated in SIRP. SIRP consisted of 4 sessions including 10 activities (e.g., story-telling, arts, experiment, checking nutrition facts, pledge), delivered to children at preschools by nutritionists over a one-month period. Three letters were sent to parents throughout the program to inform them of the children's activities at the preschools and to provide additional information on reducing children's sugars intake. A total of 90 children completed the program; 83 parents of these children completed the SIRP evaluation survey. The children's sugars intake reduction score was significantly increased after attending SIRP. Teachers (n=6) who participated in this program agreed to improve their students' attitudes on reducing sugars intake and to decrease students' behaviors related to sugars intake. Parents agreed to improve their children's attitude on reducing sugars intake and to decrease children's behaviors related to sugars intake. The outcome showed SIRP improved participants' attitudes towards sugars reduction and increased the skills to reduce the sugars intake of children aged 5~6 years. Future studies should examine whether SIRP reduces actual sugars intake among children.

This study is to compare the quality of child care centers in Sweden and Korea and the mothers' satisfaction of each center. In this study, the quality of 27 preschools in Sweden and 24 child care centers was evaluated by external evaluator using the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS). A total of 436 Korean mothers and 197 Swedish mothers responded to the questionnaire regarding their satisfaction of their child's attending child care centers. The results show that the quality of Swedish preschool was significantly higher than Korean child care centers. The quality of Swedish preschools tended to be good whereas the quality of Korean child care centers was somewhat minimal. Specifically, the category of 'Furnishings and display for children' was the highest score in Swedish preschool, however, the category of 'Adult needs' was the highest score in Korean child care centers. The mothers' satisfaction of the centers was significantly different between two countries. The Swedish mothers were highly satisfied with the close location of preschool but Korean mothers were highly satisfied with the teachers of child care centers. However, both mothers in two countries were less likely satisfied with the facility equipments. The results were discussed in terms of cultural and child care program differences further.

Methods: Physical examinations were done for 993 preschoolers in 12 preschools. Their parents (n=727) completed a questionnaire on health status and health knowledge of their children and 35 teachers in preschools completed one on health knowledge of preschoolers. Based on the results of the physical examinations and survey, a combined health promotion program was developed. In order to evaluate the program, 35 teachers and 104 parents participated in the program. The effects of the program were tested and health knowledge before and after the program was analyzed. Results: Health knowledge of parents and teachers increased significantly after attending the combined health promotion program.
