  • Objectives : The oral care during early childhood plays an important role to maintain sound oral health during adulthood. As the number of children's using child care facilities is on the rise recently, the children's oral health awareness and behavior of the educators at nurseries and kindergartens are to be examined. Methods : A self-recording survey was conducted on 194 educators at the nurseries and kindergartens in Chungnam region. Results : The most frequently given snack was milk, 91.8 percent of the facilities had children brush their teeth, 63.4 percent made them apply fluoride and 56.2 percent kept children's toothbrushes in an ultraviolet rays sterilizer. There was a meaningful difference in the awareness of the necessity to educate children about oral health according to the offer of the opportunity to apply fluoride (p<0.05). A meaningful difference was found in the recognition of the necessity to educate children according to their grade (p<0.05) and to train teachers themselves (p<0.05). The most desirable persons in charge of oral health education were dentists in health centers (46.9%) in order. The more experience in teaching they have had (p<0.05), when they're married (50.5%) (p<0.05) and when they're not homeroom teachers (52.6 percent), the more regular checkups they have had (p<0.05). As for the importance of oral health and the results of regular checkups, those who had answered 'very important'(42.4%) showed higher rate of regular checkup (p<0.05) than those who had answered 'important'(23.9%). When teachers have the experience to get trained about oral care (96.3%), the practice frequency of brushing teeth was proved to become higher (p<0.05). Conclusions : The educators for children should recognize the importance of oral health education, educate children to practice oral health care, and the environment and systematic foundation should be established which the educators manage effectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of child's general property, mother's social and economic property, mother's knowledge and behavior in oral hygiene upon the appearance and treatment of child's primary tooth decay. For the purpose, oral examination was applied to one hundred three(103) small children who were at the age between four(4) and seven(7) and went to two(2) places of day care centers located in Seoul, and questionnaire was done to their mothers. The results of the study are as follows. 1. The number of children's dt is 1.55, the number of their ft is 1.42, dft index for primary tooth is 2,98, ft rate is 45.61%, and the higher child's age is, the higher their value is. 2. Mother's age, educational background, and occupation does not show significant difference with dft index for primary tooth. The higher mother's monthly average income is, the higher child's ft rate is. 3. dft index for primary tooth does not show significant difference according 10 mother's knowledge in oral hygiene. And, the child of mother using dental floss does show higher it rate in comparison with the one of mother who does not use dental floss, 4. Experience using dental clinic to treatment tooth decay does show significant difference with dft index for primary tooth. And experience using dental clinic for the purpose of oral examination and preventive treatment does show significant difference with ft rate. 5. From the result of multiple regression with dependent variable of dft index for primary tooth, there is no variable having significant influence. From the result of multiple regression with dependent variable of ft rate, explanatory variable is 43%, child's age, mother's occupation, mother's monthly average income, and experience using dental clinic to prevent tooth decay are significant explanatory elements. Through the above results, we can know that mother should practice positive behavior in oral hygiene for child to improve oral health. Under the reason, oral health education should be applied toward mothers as soon as possible, and governmental support should be followed so that mothers can participate in the education.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the young children's 'more means more' bias and knowledge change process regarding a lever phenomenon, especially the relationship between the weight of an object and the strength of force and between the length of a lever and the strength of force. Subjects, who were presented with the tasks, were eight young children 5 years of age. Major findings were as followings. First, most of the subjects have a 'more means more' bias about the relationship between the weight of an object and the strength of force and between the length of a lever and the strength of force regarding a lever phenomenon. This meant that young children have similar concepts about a lever phenomenon regardless of whether it is right or wrong physically. Second, young children tried to make sure of their knowledge during experiments. They chose the evidence which confirmed their knowledge. But they tried to change their knowledge, when the evidence presented did not correspond to their knowledge. These findings contribute to understanding young children's 'more means more' bias and knowledge change process about a lever phenomenon and can be used in preschool science education programs and curriculums.

  • TPR(Total Physical Response) is a new representative learning method for children's education. Today's approach to TPR has focused on signals from a user which becomes input data in a human-computer interaction, but the accuracy of sensing from body signals(e. g. motion and voice) isn't so perfect that it seems difficult to apply on an education system. To overcome these limits, we suggest a mediating interface device which can detect the user's motion using correct numerical values such as acceleration and angular speed. In addition, we suggest new design requirements for the mediating device through analyzing children's behavior as human factors by ethnography research and protocol analysis. As a result, we found that; children are unskilled in physical control when they use objects; tend to lean on an object unconsciously with touch. Also their behaviors are restricted, when they use objects. Therefore a mediating device should satisfy new design requirements which are make up for unskilled handling, support familiar and natural physical activity.

  • To investigate knowledge and attitude of parents about early childhood caries and dental caries prevention, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 247 parents of children who had oral screening experience among 3 to 5 years old children in 3 kindergartens in Jeonju city. A total of 220 completed questionnaires were selected for final analysis. The overall perception of the parents about oral health of the children was 82.3 points (10.7 / 13) in terms of 100 points. There were statistically significant correlations between maternal age (p = 0.027), maternal education level (p = 0.002), household monthly income (p = 0.000) and maternal oral health knowledge level. The main source of oral health information was 'dentist and dental hygienist'(83.6%) followed by 'Web search'(22.3%). Compared with the previous studies, the level of knowledge of parents about oral health of the children was improved. However, in order to raise awareness of the parents about the poorly assessed items in this study, it is necessary to increase the participation rate by advertising the national dental screening program for infants and children and make efforts to improve the quality of oral health education in screening.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm how keeping a educational diary in which no feedback is given in the teaching practice in kindergartens affects a teacher efficacy and the educational belief of preschool teachers-to-be as well as the organizational health of kindergartens to practice according to the way teachers feel. With this aim, the study aimed at 34 seniors at the Department of Early Childhood Education in the four-year college in Chungnam. The study conducted this experiment using the nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design, and carried out a $x^2$ analysis and a t-test according to the data. Concerning the research results, first, keeping a educational diary of teaching practice affirmatively affected a teacher efficacy. Second, it did not significantly affect a teacher's educational belief. Third, it did not significantly affect the organizational health of the kindergarten to practice according to the ways teachers-to-be feel. This study is meaningful in that keeping a reflective journal in which feedback by a guidance teacher for practice becomes the basic proposition may be replaced with the keeping of a diary of practice at the level of practicality. This means that a teacher's sense of efficacy may improve simply by keeping a educational diary of teaching practice without feedback by a guidance teacher.

  • Purpose: Food allergies in children are known to impact the quality of life for growing children as well as their parents. This study investigates the status of food allergy and its management among preschoolers, and evaluates the effect on parental burden. Methods: In May 2019, five kindergartens and daycare centers in Jeju area were randomly selected, and parents (n = 638) who had preschoolers younger than 6-year-old were surveyed using a questionnaire. A total of 387 participants were included in the final data analysis. Results: The percentage of children (aged 3 to 6 years old) who experienced food allergies was 16.8%; 44.6% had been diagnosed as having a food allergy by doctors. Food allergies were first experienced in more than two-thirds of the subjects when they were less than a year old. Egg and milk were the most frequent allergenic foods with some skin related symptoms. A mere 15.4% children suffering from food allergies were offered substitutes for their allergenic foods. Lastly, as compared to other parents, the parents of children who experienced food allergies had not only higher nutritional knowledge, but also heavier parental burden including emotional distress. Regardless of their nutritional knowledge, parents of children with food allergy expressed their willingness to attend nutrition education classes, if available in future. Conclusion: For prevention of food allergies and proper nourishment of children with food allergies, there is a necessity to provide customized-nutritional education for the affected parents to help alleviate their parental burden, especially for reducing emotional distress.

  • This study aims to give a broad overview of family-related contents in home economics from the 1st national curriculum to the 2007 revised national curriculum, thereby contributing to value fulfillment, textbook research, and educational development of home economics. The findings are summed up as follows: First, this study looks at the change of family-related goals and contents in home economics tutorials by national curriculum. Family-related goals shift a focus from a member of nation to individual pursuit of happiness, and the scope of family-related contents expands from a part of family (i.e. understanding of children) to every aspect of family life. Second, family-related contents record a higher share in home economics textbooks at the later stage of national curriculum. Third, this study classifies the change of family-related contents in home economics textbooks by national curriculum into seven categories: understanding of human development, process of human development, parenting and parental roles, understanding of family and family transition, marriage and family development, family relationship and issues, and family well-being. In particular, 'understanding of human development' underscores fundamental principles between the 3rd~6th national curriculum, 'process of human development' broadens its initial focuses on infancy and the preschool period to every scope of human development after the 5th national curriculum. 'Parenting and parental role' continues to stress parental roles and duties plus childcare for infants and preschoolers. In 'understanding of family and family transition,' national curriculums show the biggest difference in family perspectives subject to social change, and later national curriculums feature various family types recently on the rise. In 'marriage and family development,' initial national curriculums construe marriage as a necessity, whereas later national curriculums emphasize it as a matter of choice intertwined with mature love and responsibility. With coming under spotlight in recent national curriculum, 'family relationship and issues' highlights communication and family views based on gender equality for family unity. 'Family well-being' constitutes a pivotal part in the 2007 revised national curriculum, and it has recently emerged as the hottest issue in the family area as it presents lifelong welfare.
