  • There are several English constructions in which a certain constituent appears to the left of its canonical position, typically sentence-initially, leaving its canonical position empty. Such constructions involve Left-dislocation and Y-movement. These operations are called ‘Preposing.’ The preposed constituent of such constructions is generally regarded as the topic of the sentence which involves that constituent. Topics must have at least two features; ‘aboutness’ and ‘givenness.’ The feature ‘aboutness’ defines the range of comment, and the feature ‘givenness’ means ‘informationally old or given.’ The purpose of this paper is to show that the function of Preposing is to reinforce the aboutness of the preposed constituent of a sentence and that most preposed constituents have givenness. We examined Preposing for this purpose. Tough-movement and Passivization were examined also, because they have characteristics informationally similar to those of Preposing.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the phenomena of preposing and inversion in English from the discourse-pragmatic perspectives. We claim that different types of preposing can be unified to a single process of topicalization. We also show that diverse discourse functions of inversion can be subsumed under the ‘linking’ function with the prior discourse. It is followed a comparative discussion between preposing and inversion to find what similarities the two constructions share and what differences there exist between the two. It is concluded that the choice of a syntactic forms ultimately depends on the speaker's evaluation of the information status of the knowledge store of the hearer.

  • This study developed the perspective model of behavior of physical therapists(PTs) and occupational therapists(OTs) who are dealing with confidential patient medical information in hospitals. Theory of planned Behavior(TpB) model, expanded models 1 and 2 that add habit, social pressure, and work convenience concept to TpB are tested for the validity in explaining the preposing factors that affect the behavior of PTs and OTs in ensuring the confidentiality of patient medical records. Data were collected by administrating a survey to the 120 PTs and OTs in A city. Of the 120 questionaries distributed, 110 were responded resulting 91.6% of response rate. There were not significantly different among the group classified by age, 'clinical career, gender, work family, and education level were analysis using with Independent t test and one-way ANOVA. The relationships on the concepts suggested in the models were analysed by applying the Structured Equations Modeling methods. The results of Structured Equations analysis showed that expanded model 2 was more effective model than TpB model and expanded model 1.
