The purpose of this study was to photoelastically visualize 4he distribution of fortes transmitted to the alveolus and surrounding structures using three different types of headgear for the distal movement of the upper molars. A photoelastic maxillary model was made and three different directional forces applied, which were high-pull, straight-pull, and cervical-pull. Stress distribution was recorded through circular polariscope, and two-dimensional photoelastic stress analysis was performed according to isochromatic fringe characteristics. The results were as follows: 1. In the case of high-pull headgear bodily movement occurred in the medium- length outer bow, stress distribution in the apical region was 1st molar, 2nd premolar, lst premolar in sequence and there was no apparent difference. 2. In the case of straight-pull headgear, bodily movement occurred in the long outer bow and stress distribution in the apical region was heavy in the 1st molar, 2nd premolar, 1st premolar in sequence. But. there were no apparent differences according to the length of the outer bow. 3. In the case of cervical- pull headgear, bodily movement also occulted in 4he long outer bow, and apical stress of the premolar region was heaviest among other cases and apical stress of the 2nd premolar was heaviest in the short outer bow. In clinical situations, to achieve bodily movement of the upper 1st molars without modifying outer bow height, applying an outer bow length as long as the inner bow length in high-pull headgear and applying an outer bow length longer than the inner bow length in straight-pull, cervical-pull headgear are recommended.
Orthodontists, in evaluating maxillary impactd canines, must take into consideration the etiology of the problem. First, the possible etiologic factors must be eliminated. Thus some cases can be treated with orthodontic treatment alone without surgical trauma following window opening etc. Now, two cases are reported, which were treated without surgical intervention.
Sometimes, impacted canine can be included in a plan for tooth removal due to its severe impaction and displacement. In such case, first premolar can be substituted for canine. One case which was treated by substituting maxillary first premolar for maxillary impacted canine is reported.

The primary intra-osseous carcinoma (PIOC) is a very rare lesion. PIOC is an odontogenic carcinoma defined as a squamous cell carcinoma arisinig within a jaw having no initial connection with the oral mucosa, and presumably developing from residues of the odontogenic epithelium. The authors diagnosed a 51-year-old female as primary intra-osseous carcinoma after undergoing clinical, radiological and histological examinations. The characteristics were as followed : 1. The patient complained of gingival bleeding on the premolar area in the left maxilla 2. The conventional radiograms showed a relatively well-defined unilocular radiolucent lesion from the mesial aspect of the upper left canine to the mesial aspect of the upper left 1st molar. The 2nd premolar was separated from the 1st molar and the floor of the maxillary sinus was elevated by the lesion. There was a external root resorption of the upper left canine, the 1st premolar, and the 2nd premolar. 3. On the computed tomograms, the osteolytic bony lesion expanded the cortical plate of the left maxilla and displaced the margin of the left maxillary sinus upwards. But the bony lesion was separated from the maxillary sinus by a bony septum. 4. Bone scintigram with /sup 99m/Tc demonstrated the increased uptake in the left maxilla. Sonograms in the neck area and chest P-A radiogram didn't show any abnormalities. 5. Histologically, the tumor islands infiltrating into the surrounding bone increased in alveolar pattern, composed of the malignant cells, and there was a necrosis in the center of the tumor islands.
Dental maturity is one of the index of physiological maturity indicators. To investigate the relationship between dental maturity and chronological age, the author took the orthopantomograms of 984 students, aged 7 through 17 years, having normal occlusion. The orthopantomograms were examined and calcification degree of each tooth on the left side was rated according to the method described by Demirjian. On the basis of findings of this study, the following results were obtained. 1. The root completion periods of mandibular permanent teeth were as follows; Central Incisor M $8.32{\pm}1.03\;years$ F $7.96{\pm}1.04\;years$ Lateral Incisor M $9.40{\pm}1.30\;years$ F $9.01{\pm}0.90\;years$ Canine M $12.81{\pm}1.24\;years$ F $11.42{\pm}0.94\;years$ 1st Premolar M $12.76{\pm}1.74\;years$ F $12.19{\pm}1.33\;years$ 2nd Premolar M $13.31{\pm}1.88\;years$ F $12.88{\pm}1.49\;years$ 1st Molar M $9.60{\pm}1.69\;years$ F $9.30{\pm}1.16\;years$ 2nd Molar M $14.38{\pm}1.73\;years$ F $13.96{\pm}1.63\;years$ 2. Sexual differences in same age group at given calcification stage were not significant statistically. 3. The developmental order in mandibular permanent teeth was as follows; a) central incisor, b) lateral incisor, c) 1st molar, d) canine and 1st premolar, e) 2nd premolar, f) 2nd molar.
Statement of problem: In distal extension removable partial denture, the preservation of health of abutment teeth are very important, but they are always subjected to unfavorable stress. Purpose: The purpose of this study was performed to investigate the effects of abutment splinting and design of direct retainer on the stress distribution of abutments in unilateral distal extension removable partial dentures. Material and method: Abutments were splinted by different method. In group 1, autment teeth were not splinted, in group 2, canine and 1st premolar were splinted, and in group 3, canine, 1st and 2nd premolars were all splinted. Three different types of direct retainer such as Akers clasp, RPI clasp, and wrought wire clasp were designed. Strain was measured with Switch & Balance Unit(SB-10, Measurement Group Instruments Division, Raleigh USA) and Strain Indicator(P-3500, Measurement Group Instruments Division, Raleigh, USA) 15kg of vertical and oblique loads was applied at central fossa of missing 2nd molar area. Results : The strain on lingual side of 2nd premolar was the greatest, and abutment splinting induced decrease of strain on buccolingual side of 2nd premolar. The strain of loaded area was decreased by abutment splinting and there was no statistical difference of strain between Group2 and Group 3, and strain on 2nd premolar in wrought wire clasp was the least. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, splinting of two distal abutment teeth is enough for stress distribution widely, and wrought wire clasp was more benefitable than others.
Procedures for treatment of molar furcation invasion defects range from open flap debridement, apically repositioned flap surgery, hemisection, tunneling or extraction, to regenerative therapies using bone grafting or guided tissue regenerative therapy, or a combination of both. Several clinical evaluations using regenerative techniques have reported the potential for osseous repair of treated furcation invasions. Regenerative treatment of maxillary molars are more difficult due to the multiple root anatomy and multiple furcation entrances therefore, purpose of this study was to evaluated histologically compomer and Ketac Silver as a barrier in the treatment of a bi-furcated maxillary premolar. Five adult beagle dogs were used in this experiment. With intrasulcular and crestal incision, mucoperiostcal flap was elevated. Following decortication with 1/2 high speed round bur, furcation defect was made on maxillary premolar. 2 month later one premolar was filled with compomer and the other premolar was filled with Ketac Silver. After 4, 8 weeks, the animals were sacrificed by vascular perfusion. Tissue block was excised including the tooth and prepared for light microscope with H-E staining. Results were as follows. 1. Compomer & Ketac Silver restoration were encapsulated fine connective tissue. 2. In 4 weeks, compomer & Ketac Silver restoration slightly infiltrated inflammatory cells but not disturb the new bone or new cementum formation. 3. In 8 weeks, compomer & Ketac Silver restoration were less infiltrated iflammatory cell and encapsulated fine connective tissue. 4. Therefore, compomer & Ketac Silver filling to the grade III maxillary furcations with multiple root anatomy and multiple furcation entrances is possible clinical method and this technique is useful method for maxillary furcation involvement but it is thought that periodic maintenance should be needed
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an intentionally created socket on bone remodeling with orthodontic tooth movement in rabbits. Methods: Eighteen male rabbits weighing 3.8 - 4.25 kg were used. An 8-mm deep and 2-mm wide socket was drilled in the bone 1 mm mesial to the right mandibular first premolar. The left first premolar was extracted to serve as an extraction socket. A traction force of 100 cN was applied to the right first premolar and left second premolar. Sections were obtained at the middle third of the moving tooth for both the drilled and extraction sockets and evaluated with hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemical analyses. The amount of tooth movement and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive cell count were compared between the 2 groups using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: At week 2, the distance of tooth movement was significantly higher in the intentional socket group (p < 0.05) than in the extraction socket group. The number of TRAP-positive cells decreased in week 2 but increased in week 3 (p < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences between the groups. Furthermore, results of transforming growth factor (TGF)-${\beta}$ staining revealed no significant differences. Conclusions: The intentional socket group showed greater distance of tooth movement than did the extraction socket group at week 2. Osteoclast counts and results of immunohistochemical analyses suggested elevated bone remodeling in both the groups. Thus, osteotomy may be an effective modality for enhancing tooth movement in orthodontic treatment.

PURPOSE. Bone density at implant placement site is a key factor to obtain the primary stability of the fixture, which, in turn, is a prognostic factor for osseointegration and long-term success of an implant supported rehabilitation. Recently, an implant motor with a bone density measurement probe has been introduced. The aim of the present study was to test the objectiveness of the bone densities registered by the implant motor regardless of the operator performing them. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 3704 bone density measurements, performed by means of the implant motor, were registered by 39 operators at different implant sites during routine activity. Bone density measurements were grouped according to their distribution across the jaws. Specifically, four different areas were distinguished: a pre-antral (between teeth from first right maxillary premolar to first left maxillary premolar) and a sub-antral (more distally) zone in the maxilla, and an interforaminal (between and including teeth from first left mandibular premolar to first right mandibular premolar) and a retroforaminal (more distally) zone in the lower one. A statistical comparison was performed to check the inter-operators variability of the collected data. RESULTS. The device produced consistent and operator-independent bone density values at each tooth position, showing a reliable bone-density measurement. CONCLUSION. The implant motor demonstrated to be a helpful tool to properly plan implant placement and loading irrespective of the operator using it.

Transposition is a unique and extreme form of ectopic eruption where a tooth develops and erupts in a position, normally occupied by an adjacent tooth. Generally, three treatment options are available when the maxillary canine and first premolar are transposed. In the first treatment option, the transposed position of the teeth can be maintained such that the first premolar is moved to the position of the canine. Second, extraction of the maxillary first premolar can be considered. Third, the position of the transposed teeth can be corrected such that their normal positions in the arch are restored. Factors that should be considered in treatment modality decision include function, occlusion, periodontal support, treatment time, patient cooperation, and esthetic demands. This report describes cases of maxillary canine-premolar transposition treated with each of the three aforementioned treatment options. In the first case, transposed teeth were arranged in their transposed position. The second case was an extraction case. In the third case, orthodontic treatment and surgical repositioning were conducted.
The purpose of this study was to compare the amount of the vertical pin opening of $33^{\circ}$ resin and $0^{\circ}$ resin teeth during processing and to determine whether the changes in tooth contacts by using articulation ribbon and T-Scan system follow any identifiable pattern, and to determine if there is any correlation between the changes in tooth contacts and the amount of the vertical pin opening after processing. Through statistical analyses on the data from this study, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. The amounts of the vertical pin opening were 0.78m, 0.87mm for $0^{\circ}$ teeth and $33^{\circ}$ teeth, respectively. But there was no significant difference between them. 2. The total number of contact points recorded by articulating ribbon after processing was decreased to 442.5% of that before processing. 3. The mean values for the number of contact points per tooth recorded by articulating ribbon after processing were 4.3 for the second molar, 3.8 for the first molar, 1.3 for the second premolar, 0.8 for the first premolar. The reduction of contact points per tooth became greater moving in an anterior direction. 4. The correlation between the reduction of contact points and the amount of the pin opening after processing was not significant. 5. The mean values for the numbers of contact points per tooth recorded by T-Scan system after processing were 2.2, 2.5, 1.0, and 0.5 at the second molar, the first molar, the second premolar, and the first premolar, respectively. 6. The correlation between the number of contact points by using articulating ribbon and TScan system after processing was not significant.
