A characterization of turbulent reacting flows has proved difficult owing to the complex interaction between turbulence, mixing, and combustion chemistry. There are many types of time scales in turbulent flame which can determine flame structure. This counter jet type premixed burner produces high intensity turbulence. The goal is to gain better insights into the flame structures at high turbulence. 6 propane/air flames gave been studied with high velocity fluctuation in bundle type nozzle and in one hole type nozzle. By measuring velocity fluctuation, turbulent intensity and integral length scale are obtained. And sets of OH LIF images were processed to see flame structure of the mean flame curvatures and flame lengths for comparison with turbulence intensity and turbulent length scales. The results show that the decrease in nozzle size generates smaller flow eddy and mean curvatures of the flame fronts, and a decrease in Damkohler number estimated from flow time scale measurement.

In order to understand the phenomena of combustion instability, an experimental study was conducted at the moderate pressure and ambient temperature conditions. The flame behavior and the pressure fluctuations were measured in a dump combustor. Various types of combustion modes occurred in accordance with the equivalence ratio and the fuel supplying conditions. The fluctuation of pressure, heat release and equivalence ratio were measured by piezoelectric pressure sensor, high speed Intensified Charge Coupled Device (HICCD) camera and gas chromatography respectively. Two representative modes were self-excited pressure oscillations at the resonance of combustion chamber (200Hz) and instabilities related to the modulated fuel flow rate through the fuel holes (10Hz). It is found that, especially in an unchoked fuel flow condition, the modulation of the fuel flow rate affects the characteristics of flame behavior and pressure fluctuations in a lean premixed flame.

Oxy-fuel combustion is a reliable way for the reduction of pollutants, the higher combustion efficiency and the separation of carbon dioxide. The review of recent research trends and the prospects of oxy-fuel combustion were presented. The difference in characteristics among oxy-fuel combustion, conventional air combustion, oxy-fuel combustion with flue gas recirculation (FGR) technique was investigated. Recent experiments of oxy-fuel combustion with/without FGR were surveyed in various ways which are optimized burner design, flame characteristics, the soot emission, the radiation effect, the NOx reduction and the corrosion of combustor. Numerical simulation is more important in oxy-fuel combustion because flame temperature is so high that conventional measurement devices have a restricted application. Equilibrium and non-equilibrium chemical reaction mechanisms for oxy-fuel combustion were investigated. Combustion models suitable for the numerical simulation of non-premixed oxy-fuel flame were surveyed.

We construct a mobile broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy system to measure the temperature of combustion gases. To improve the accuracy of CARS temperatures due to Stokes lasers, a modeless dye laser is constructed. A monochromator to disperse CARS spectra is also constructed in the spectrometer for easy portability. The accuracy of CARS temperature, measured in graphite tube furnace in reference to a radiation pyrometer, is better than 2 % from 1000 K to 2400 K. The CARS temperature error due to the variation of the spectral distribution of the modeless laser is measured to be less than 1.5 % during five hours operation. As a demonstration of combustion diagnosis, we applied the spectrometer to measure the temperature distribution of the propane air premixed flame.
This study is aiming to establish the relationship between the optical signal of flame through an optical fiber and the equivalent ratio of flame. In this experiment, flame optical signal in a furnace is measured using photodiode. The combustion system is composed of 15W turbulent burner and industrial boiler, and flame chemiluminescence is measured at various experimental conditions. In this study, the flame chemiluminescence of turbulent premixed flame is measured using commercially available photodiode. It is experimentally investigated the relationship between equivalent ratio and photodiode signal.

$CO_2$ is well known greenhouse gas which is the major source of global warming. Reducing $CO_2$ emission in combustion process can be achieved by increasing combustion efficiency, oxygen enriched combustion and recirculation of the emitted $CO_2$ gas. Stability of non-premixed flame in oxygen enriched environment will be affected by the amount of oxygen, kind of diluents and fuel exit velocity. The effects of these parameters on flame liftoff and blowout are studied experimentally oxidizer coflowing burner. Experiments were divided into three cases according as where $CO_2$gas was supplied. - 1) to coflowing air, 2) to fuel with 0$_2$-$N_2$ coflow, 3) to coflowing oxygen. Flame in air coflowing case was lifted in turbulent region. Flame lift and blowout in laminar region with the increase in $CO_2$ volume fraction in $CO_2$-Air mixture makes flame lift and blowout in laminar region. Increase in oxygen volume fraction makes flame stable-i.e. flame liftoff and blowout occur at higher fuel flowrates. Liftoff height was non-linear function of nozzle exit velocity and affected by the $O_2$ volume fraction. It was found that the flame in $O_2$-$N_2$ coflow case was more stable than $O_2$-$CO_2$ case, Liftoff heights vs (nozzle exit velocity/laminar burning velocity)$^{3.8}$ has a good correlation in $O_2$-$CO_2$ oxidizer case.

The swirl flame is mostly used to stabilize the flame on the burner nozzle in the industrial combustor. In the case of the weak swirl flame(S<0.4), the recirculation zone could not be formed, but in the strong swirl(S>0.6) flame, it could be formed in the center of the swirl flame. In this study, the measurement and analysis of emission species, temperature, radicals of premixed swirl flame in the combustor were performed to understand the NO formation and emission characteristics of the swirl flame of natural gas. The result of NO emission in the swirl flame is that the amount of NO emission in the strong swirl flame decreased about 60% compared with that of the weak swirl flame. The main region of NO formation of the weak swirl flame is positioned in the down stream(z=100~200mm) of the flame, but that of the strong swirl flame is positioned in the up stream(z=40mm) where the recirculation zone seems to be formed. It is supposed that the increase of flame surface and the formation of inversed flame cause the reduction of the high temperature region on the production of NO in the strong swirl flame. The result of NO-temperature relation revealed that the factor of NO formation is not only temperature but also another parameters in the weak swirl flame, but in the strong swirl flame, NO is proportional to the temperature of higher than 1200K.
Hydrogen which can be produced through reforming process of hydrocarbon fuel is supplied into anode side of fuel cell system. In the fuel cell, only 70% of hydrogen is consumed through electrochemical reaction and 30% hydrogen passed by as anode off gas. When electrical output of fuel cell is within range of 1.0 to 3.0kW, burner for the reformer uses only anode off gas. And it uses mixture gas of anode off gas and LNG within range of 3.5 to 5.0kW in electrical output. CHEMKIN 4.1 program's Premixed code was used for calculating the properties of each gas. Results show that burning velocity and adiabatic flame temperature are 34.4cm/s, 1681.7K at equivalence ratio 0.8 within range of 1.0kW to 3.0kW and for cases of 3.5kW, 5.0kW, of electrical output, burning velocity and adiabatic flame temperature represent 30.5, 29.8cm/s and 1722.8, 1750K respectively. CO shows the lowest emission index at equivalence ratio 0.8 and NOx reveals the highest emission index at equivalence ratio 1.

Experimental investigations were conducted to examine the combustion characteristics of a swirl-stabilized double cone premixed burner nozzle used for industrial gas turbines for power generation. Several variants with different fuel injection patterns are tested to compare the combustion characteristics such as NOx and CO emissions, stability, and wall temperature distributions. Main results show that NOx emissions and stability are decreased either when the fuel hole diameter is decreased with the same number of fuel holes, or when the number of fuel holes is reduced with the same total area of fuel holes, both of which are due to a higher penetration of fuel into the air stream. Not only is NOx reduced but also stability is enhanced when the fuel hole diameter varies in an alternating manner with the same total area of fuel holes, showing that NOx reduction is due to a higher penetration of mean fuel injection path while stability enhancement is due to a lowered penetration of minimum fuel injection path.
