  • Generation MZ has emerged as a significant consumer segment and trendsetter in the fashion market of South Korea. Fashion designer brands have become popular among this generation by offering a range of fashion content on social network services (SNS) based on fresh and trendy designs. Despite the growing market share of fashion designer brands in the industry, previous research has mainly focused on brand personality in line with the characteristics of traditional fashion brands. Therefore, this study aims to derive brand personality and SNS characteristics of fashion designer brands based on previous research and investigate the influence of these factors on brand preference and behavioral intention. Moreover, it examines how this influencing mechanism fluctuates based on the consumer type (i.e., innovative type vs. price-sensitive type). Based on an online survey of 256 Korean adults with experience in fashion designer brands, this study identified the influencing mechanisms on purchase intention and word-of-mouth intention. This study contributes to empirical investigations of consumer brand preference and behavior intention in fashion designer brands through the brand equity model. It also offers insight into developing a segmented brand strategy by considering the variations in the influence mechanism of behavioral intention across different consumer types.

Our results indicate that brand history, congruity between COB and COM, and conspicuous consumption had significant effect on the fashion brand preference of consumers. Furthermore, presenting the brand history resulted in higher brand preference. Second, the brand history and conspicuous consumption had a significant interaction effect on brand preference. Consumers with higher conspicuous consumption showed significantly higher brand preference than those with lower conspicuous consumption. • This study aimed to identify the effects of fashion brand extensions types, preannouncing and consumers' regulatory focus on preference towards extension products. To that end, the study used a 2 (fashion brand extension types: similar vs. non-similar) ${\times}2$ (preannouncing: near preannouncing vs. far preannouncing) ${\times}2$ (regulatory focus: promotion focus vs. prevention focus) three mixed elements. The subjects of the study were 280 men and women in their 20~40s living in Seoul and Chungnam province and total of 229 data were analyzed. Data were analysed with SPSS 19.0 program and three-way ANOVA, simple interaction effects and simple main effects analysis were conducted. The results of this study are as follows: First there were significant differences in preference based on fashion brand extension types and preannouncing. Second, there were significant interaction effects in preference between extension types of fashion brand and regulatory focus. But there was no difference in preference toward extension products according to types of preannouncing and regulatory focus. Lastly, fashion brand extension types, preannouncing and regulatory focus showed significant interaction effects on preference. Thus even in cases of non-similar brand extensions which carry more risk of failing, the appropriate marketing communication strategies such as preannouncing will result in brand preference. Also marketing activities should be comprehensive and strategical based on consumers' tendencies in order to derive positive evaluations.
