Feeding behaviors of a sea urchin, Mesocentrotus nudus, on six common seaweeds from the east coast of Korea

  • The sea urchin, Mesocentrotus nudus, is widely distributed in North West Pacific regions. It has a substantial impact on macroalgal communities as a generalist herbivore. This study examined various aspects of its feeding ecology, including algal preference, foraging behaviors, and possible effects of past feeding history on its algal preference. We used six common algal species (Ulva australis, Undaria pinnatifida, Sargassum confusum, Dictyopteris divaricata, Grateloupia elliptica, and Grateloupia angusta) from the east coast of Korea as food choice in a series of indoor aquarium experiments. The first choice of starved M. nudus was exclusively U. pinnatifida, followed by G. elliptica and S. confusum. Unlike large urchins, small urchins equally preferred U. pinnatifida and G. elliptica. On the other hand, Undaria-fed urchins preferred to feed only G. elliptica, although its preference slightly differed over time. We then grouped sea urchins into three categories (starved, Undaria-fed, mixed species-fed) to observe 12-days feeding preference as well as early foraging movements. Foraging behaviors of the three groups were distinctively different, although they could not completely reflect the actual consumption. For example, U. australis was highly attractive, but rarely eaten. Undaria-fed urchins seemed to stay with only S. confusum and U. australis. This study demonstrates that M. nudus shows high flexibility in food preference depending on past feeding history and body size. Its foraging behaviors are also affected by past feeding conditions, exhibiting active chemoreceptive movements.

  • 진술선호법 연구의 질을 좌우하는 결정적인 요소 중의 하나는 설문지 디자인이다. 본 연구는 Choice Experiments(속성가치선택법) 연구결과의 합리성을 제고함과 아울러 타당성을 검정하기 위한 기술적인 방법으로서 선택질문(choice questions)과 유사한 '예제'를 이용하는 방법에 관하여 논한다. 라돈(radon) 방사능 저감에 대한 지불의사 추정 사례를 이용하였다. 비합리적인 응답을 가려내기 위한 '예제' 디자인을 이용한 사례에서, 설문지 디자인에 관하여 논한 후 한다. 비합리적 응답의 색출 및 제거는 모형의 설명력 증대를 가져왔다. 한편 설문디자인의 영향을 직접적으로 받는 발산적(divergent) 타당성은 닻효과(anchoring effect) 검증을 중심으로 논하였다. 예제의 내용을 기술적으로 디자인하여 두 부차표본들을 만들고 이에 대한 추정모형들간의 동질성을 평가함으로써 닻효과를 검증하였다. 다양한 닻효과 검증 결과는 혼재되었다. 예제 디자인의 장단점에 대해서도 논하였다.

제주도산 까막전복의 해조류 섭식선호도와 섭식자극물질 (Feeding Stimulants and Feeding Preference of Haliotis discus Reeve (Jeju Island) to Marine Algae)

  • Haliotis discus, a useful abalone of herbivorous gastropod, shows feeding preference to marine algae depending upon their growth stage and recognition of taste. This study was carried out to investigate this abalone's algal preferences and the presence of feeding stimulants. In single-choice experiments the small (S) group generally preferred Ulva pertusa (Chlorophyta), whereas the medium (M) and large (L) group preferred both Laminaria japonica (Phaeophyta) and Undaria pinnatifida (Phaeophyta). In multi-choice experiments using 4 algal species of L. japonica, U. pertusa, U. pinnatifida and Ecklonia cava (Phaeophyta), the results were same as in the single-choice experiments; the S group preferred U. pertusa the most, while the M and L group preferred both U. pinnatifida and L. japonica. However E. cava was not preferred by any groups. In order to examine the presence of feeding stimulant, chemical compounds from algae used as feed were isolated and identified. The abalone responded to water soluble matters of L. japonica, U. pinnatifida and U. pertusa, but those of E. cava and Sargassum sagamianum (Phaeophyta) were not attractive to them. In feeding stimulant experiments using fat soluble matters, the S group preferred the fat soluble matter of U. pertusa the most, while the M group and the L group preferred those of U. pertusa and U. pinnatifida, and those of L. japonica, respectively. However the fat soluble matter of S. sagamianum was not attractive to the abalone. The results of feeding stimulant experiments were same as those of single-choice or multi-choice experiments, which showed that compound lipids in fat soluble matter might act as feeding-stimulant.

시리얼제품의 표시유형별 선호와 영양표시 제품의 구매의도 (Consumer Preference for the Types of Labels of Cereal Products and Purchase Intention of Nutrition-labeled Products)

  • The purposes of this study were to explore consumer preference for the types of nutrition label of cereal products and to identify some influencing factors on purchase intention and choice probability of nutrition-labeled products. First, most of the respondents preferred the nutrition fact panel with traffic light-GDA(TL-GDA), while the nutrition fact panel only type and the nutrition fact panel with front-of-package(FOP) type were preferred by few respondents. However, consumers evaluated higher for TL-GDA type and FOP symbol type, while the nutrition fact panel only type was evaluated much lower. Second, consumer preference for label types was partially related with 'eating breakfast' and consumer evaluations of the types of labels for the nutrition fact panel only and the nutrition fact panel with FOP were found to be significantly different by gender. Lastly, both purchase intention and choice probability for nutrition-labeled products were found to be significantly influenced by information search and product attitude. In addition, choice probability was found to be significantly influenced by individual characteristics such as gender and grade. It is necessary to find the relationship between nutrition labels and consumer response as this can help consumers make a better choice of food as well as providing some useful information on consumers to the related parties such as companies and consumer organizations.

A Regional Cultural Comparison of Medical Tourism Preference in China

  • Purpose - The effect of regional culture has been acknowledged for decades. However, very little research takes it as an important issue in the medical tourism service decision process. This study focuses on regional culture to identify customers' preference for medical tourism in the international environment. It is proposed that regional culture may work as an critical moderator in the international medical tourism destination choice process. Especially, the destination attributes may vary according to regional culture. Research design, data, and methodology - By the questionnaire survey, the sample is collected from 2,041 potential Chinese residents in different regions of China. Regression analysis is constructed to test the effect of regional culture on Chinese customers' destination preference. Results - Results imply that regional culture plays a critical moderating role in the destination choice process. Results also indicate that destination attributes including medicine and travel characteristics are the important predictors of destination preference. Conclusions - This study provides the fundamental base to use regional culture as a descriptive variable for segmentation when establishing an effective marketing strategy. Furthermore, this research suggests that different strategies relied on destination attributes should be made to attract more Chinese customers for the development of medical tourism industry.

Dietary fat preference and effects on performance of piglets at weaning

  • Objective: An experiment was to evaluate the interplay of dietary lipid sources and feeding regime in the transition from sow milk to solid food of abruptly weaned piglets. Methods: Soon after weaning, 144 piglets were selected and were trained over a 15 day period to experience gradually reducing dietary fat content from 12% to 6% for lard (L), soybean oil (S), and coconut oil (C) and their feeding behavior and diet preference then tested in a behavior observation experiment. Another 324 weaned piglets were used in three consecutive feeding experiments to measure the effect of different dietary fats on performance and feed choice in the four weeks after abrupt weaning. The lipid sources were used as supplements in a 3% crude fat corn/soya basal diet, with 6% of each being included to form diets 9C, 9S, and 9L respectively, and their effects on performance measured. Combinations of these diets were then further compared in fixed blends or free choice selection experiments. Results: Piglets pre-trained to experience reducing lipid inclusion showed different subsequent preferences according to lipid source, with a preference for lard at 9%, soybean oil at 3%, and coconut oil at 6% inclusion rate (p<0.001). Following abrupt weaning, whilst after 4 weeks those fed 9C had the heaviest body weights (18.13 kg, p = 0.006). Piglets fed a fixed 1:1 blend of 9C+9S had a poorer feed conversion ratio (FCR = 1.80) than those fed a blend of 9C+9L (FCR = 1.4). The 9C and 9L combination groups showed better performance in both fixed blend and free choice feeding regimes. Conclusion: After abrupt weaning, they still have dependence on high oleic acid lipids as found in sow milk. A feeding regime offering free choice combination of lipids might give the possibility for piglets to cope better with the transition at weaning, but further research is needed.

개별행태 접근방법에 의한 교통수단선택 행태분석에 관한 연구 -대구광역시 사례를 중심으로- (A Study on the Behavioral Analysis of Travel Mode Choice using Disaggregate Behavioral Approach)

  • The main purpose of this study is identifying the factors which affect the mode choice behavior of work trips. Disaggregate behavioral approach is used for the analysis . The data were collected using the questionnaire survey method in Taegu. Two models were developed in this study which are multinomial logit model(MODEL-1) for auto, taxi and bus and multinomial logit model (MODEL-2) for auto, taxi, bus and subway. The stated preference (SP) data were used for the analysis of the subway mode choice behavior. MODEL-1 provide reasonable results for the future application. A multinomial model (MODEL-2) developed using the stated preference(SP) data was tested for the use of future transportation mode. It is four that the those models provides reasonable results in terms of behavioral and statistical consideration.

  • This study examined testing condition when consumers have a strong ordinal preference and in a absence of established ordinal for a given attribute, how adding common features to two brands in a given product category affects brand choice. Research findings presented in this study are generally consistent with the preference confirmation view of choice. The data provides support for the proposition that (1) the effect of common features is moderated by the relative importance of brand attributes(Hypothesis 1) and (2) in the presence of primary attribute adding common features increases the likelihood of choosing the brand with the best value on this attribute(Hypotheses 2).

과학 관련 진로 선택 과정의 구조 방정식 모형 (A Structural Equation Modeling of the Process of Science Related Career Choice)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 학생들의 과학관련 진로 선택과 관련된 주요 요인들 사이의 인과 관계를 규명하여, 학생들의 과학진로 선택과정을 잘 설명할 수 있는 모형을 찾는 것이다. 요인 분석을 통하여 과학관련 진로 선택과 관련된 주요요인으로 과학 관련 진로에 대한 인식, 과학 학습에 대한 선호, 과학 관련 활동에의 참여 등 세 요인을 선정하였다. 구조방정식 모형을 통한 공변량 구조분석이 가능하도록 과학관련 진로 선택 요인을 알기 위한 설문지를 문헌연구와 예비검사를 통해 개발하였다. 연구대상은 서울 지역의 초등학교 6학년, 중학교 3학년, 고등학교 2학년 등 전체 947명으로, 학년별 남녀별 학생 수는 거의 같게 구성하였다. 과학관련 진로 선택의 주요 요인들 사이의 인과 구조를 설명하기 위하여 구조 방정식 모형을 통한 공변량 구조 분석의 결과, 이론 모형을 수정하여 자료와 잘 맞는 4가지 모형을 얻었다. 네 수정모형 모두에서, 과학 관련 진로 선택에 직접 영향을 미치는 것은 과학 관련 진로에 대한 인식이었고, 과학학습에 대한 선호와 과학 관련 활동 참여는 간접적으로 영향을 미쳤다. 적합도 지수가 가장 좋은 모형에 의하면, 과학 관련 진로 선택에 대하여, 과학 관련 진로에 대한 인식은 0.82의 직접 효과와 0.21의 간접 효과를 합한 1.03의 전체효과를 주고, 과학학습에 대한 선호는 과학 관련 활동 참여에 영향을 주면서 0.65의 간접 효과를 주고, 과학 관련 활동 참여는 과학 관련 진로 인식에 영향을 주면서 0.79의 간접 효과를 주었다. 학교의 과학 교육에 대한 시사점으로는 더 많은 학생들이 과학 관련 진로를 선택하게 하려면, 과학관련 진로인식을 높이도록 하는 것이 가장 큰 효과를 줄 수 있으며, 다음으로는 다양한 관학관련 활동에 참여하도록 하는 것과 과학학습에 대한 선호를 높이도록 하는 것이 효과적이라 할 수 있다. 과학관련 진로선택 과정을 더 잘 설명하기 위해서는, 과학관련 진로 선택 요인들을 더욱 포괄하는 모형의 구축이 필요하여, 연구대상을 과학고 학생들이나, 과학기술계 대학생들로 하여 구조방정식 모형을 검증하고 보완할 필요가 있다. 과학관련 진로 선택에 영향을 주는 요인들을 고려한 과학진로교육 프로그램을 개발하여 투입하고 그 효과를 검증하는 연구가 필요하다.

A Future Contraction Effect in Intertemporal Choice for Durable Goods

  • Recent research reported that perception of future time is non-linearly scaled. That is, as objective time gets longer, subjective perception of the objective time does not grow proportionally. The non-linear time perception implies that the same future time feels shorter when it starts in the future than when it starts immediately. The authors call this as a future contraction effect. The current research tests two important implications of the effect regarding consumers' intertemporal preference for durable goods. First, consumers who contract future more will be more impatient for durable goods compared to those who contract less because the former would feel to use the same durable goods longer when it is purchased immediately. Second, consumers' impatience will be alleviated when their tendency to contract future is reduced. The authors find support for these predictions through two studies. Taken together, the current research demonstrates a property of time perception that has important ramifications for understanding consumers' intertemporal preference for durable goods.
