  • Great efforts have been made to improve both the quality of life and life expectancy of diabetes by treating problems associated with chronic complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy. In particular, diabetes is an increased risk of developing several types of kidney disease, and the predominant cause of end-stage renal disease in patients with this disorder is diabetic nephropathy. Therefore, prevention of the occurrence and progression of diabetes and its complications has become a very important issue. The scientific observations of an animal model of streptozotocin-induced diabetes, spontaneously occurring diabetes and diabetic nephropathy in this study suggest that one of the Kampo prescriptions, Hachimi-jio-gan comprising eight constituents, is a novel therapeutic agent.

  • The nucleophilic substitution reactions of diisopropyl chlorophosphate (3) with substituted anilines ($XC_6H_4NH_2$) and deuterated anilines ($XC_6H_4ND_2$) are investigated kinetically in acetonitrile at $55.0^{\circ}C$. The anilinolysis rate of 3 is rather slow to be rationalized by the conventional stereoelectronic effects. The obtained deuterium kinetic isotope effects (DKIEs; $k_H/k_D$) are secondary inverse ($k_H/k_D$ = 0.71-0.95) with maximum magnitude at X = H.A concerted mechanism involving predominant backside nucleophilic attack is proposed on the basis of the secondary inverse DKIEs.

  • Distribution diagram of $FeCl_2$ in HCl solution indicated that $FeCl^+$ was a predominant species in strong HCl solution up to 10 M. Solvent extraction of $FeCl_2$ has been performed in the HCl concentration range from 5 to 9 M by using Alamine336 as an extractant. Interaction parameter of $FeCl^+$ for Bromley equation was estimated from our solvent extraction data. This parameter thus obtained in our study can be employed in calculating the activity coefficient of $FeCl^+$ in high concentration of HCl.

  • The effect of silicon and manganese, in the ranges of 0.3% to 1.0wt% Si and 0.7 to 2.6wt%Mn, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of flux cored arc welded deposits have been investigated for the purpose of improving mechanical properties. Microstructure of weld metals was mainly influenced by manganese content, and manganese increased the volum fraction of acicular ferrite and refined the microstructure. Also, tensile properties were governed by manganese content, ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were increased by approximately 82MPa and 58MPa per 1% Mn addition to the deposit. Toughness was improved by increasing Mn content and lowering Si content. Optimal impact properties were obtained at above 1.8wt% Mn and below 0.5wt% Si. Acicular ferrite was predominant factor in improving mechanical properties. Formation of acicular ferrite was promoted by manganese and no direct relationship between AF(acicular ferrite) proportion and oxygen in weld metal was found.

  • In this paper, earthquake response of the Bangkok area in Thailand was analyzed in terms of the acceleration response spectrum and maximum acceleration of the computed surface motions. The program SHAKE was employed to analyse the ground motion. With increasing the maximum acceleration and predominant period of given base rock motion, the computed maximum ground surface acceleration increases. but converges on a maximum value of about 0.39. The characteristics of earthquake response spectrum in the Bangkok area are also discussed and illustrated.

  • In 2007, Round Robin Test (RRT) on ground response analyses has been conducted by the technical committee of Soil Dynamics and Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering of Korean Geotechnical Society. Total 14 teams have reported 16 different results. This paper discusses the evaluation of ground response dispersion caused by the difference of input ground motions. In order to determine the characteristics of ground response, this study analysed the peak ground acceleration, predominant period, and response spectrum of reported ground surface motions. The results suggest that ground response dispersion due to the difference of input ground motions can be significant.

  • One hundred and eighty-seven water samples were collected from 23 of spring water, 2 of ground water, 1 of tap water in Pusan area and 3 of natural mineral waters. Total coliform group, fecal coliform, viable cell count and microflora were investigated to evaluate water quality of drinking water. The results were as follows: range and geometric mean value of total coliform and fecal coliform MPN's of spring water were 0~1,500/100 ml, 85/100 ml and 0~460/100 ml, 24/100 ml but coliform group was not detected in the samples of tap water and natural mineral water. Viable cell count of spring water, ground water and tap water were lower as 100 cell than the criteria for drinking water but that of natural mineral water was higher as 6.5X 10$^2$~7.4X 10$^3$ /ml. Predominant speces among the 219 strains isolated from the samples were 19.6% Aeromonas spp., 19.2% Enterobacteriaceae, 16% Acinetobacter spp. Especially, spring water and vessels were contaminated by Hafnia spp. and Providencia Spp, inhabitant of the oral cavity.

  • According to the rapid change of the modern society, science & technology influences the society significantly. Thus, Korean education, especially the science education must be reviewed in the terms of that, the purpose of this article is to introduce social, environmental context's science education-STS education. STS education is to arise the ability of the democratic decision-making & participating in a discussion. The areas of this are knowledge, process, creativity, attitude, application. Also there are social issues approach & the social studies of science approach in the STS education. The social issues approach is the predominant approach to STS education; the social studies of science approach is often found in the form of goals & objectives for STS education. In order to introduce STS education to Korean science education, this author suggests the following; 1. The relation between science & society in science education must be emphasized more. 2. The study and development of STS education appropriate for Korean society must be preceded. 3. The new course about STS and technical education in the level of college must be developed.

  • An objective examination of 123 subjects aged from 19 to 23 was made from a clinical standpoints to determine the natural occurrence in anterior tooth contact in centric occlusion, and tooth contact in protrusive occlusion, left and right lateral excursions, and temporomandibular dysfunction. 1. In centric occlusion, maxillary 6 anterior contact type was frequently observe (30.08%) compared with other types of contact (incisor contact: 19.47%, no contact: 17.70%, canine and incisor contact: 15.04%, canines contact: 12.39%, unilateral canine contact: 5.31%) (P<0.01) 2. In protrusive position (edge to edge bite), maxillary central incisors contact was predominant (86.7%). (P<0.01) 3. In lateral excursion, there was not any significant difference between canine guided occlusion (47.79%) and group function occlusion (total 51.32%, AG:9.29%, PG:13.27%, G:28.76%). 4. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction was observed in 12.4% of 123 subjects.

  • Attempts to relax cross-media ownership have been made by conservative Party and leading dailies. A concern with the cross-ownership of media is predominant in media and political spheres. This article is about the media market concentration created by cross-media ownership. This essay is a response to the demand of the ruling camp that attempts to concentrate on media market, and to increase their influence. I have outlined issues of cross ownership. The finding of this research supported the rationale of ban on cross ownership of newspaper and broadcasting outlet.
