  • Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland, compring between 30 and 40%. Fine needle apsiration cytology was performed in five patients with mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The patients consisted of three males aged of 42, 48, and 60 years, and two females aged 36, and 56 years. The primary tumor sites were the parotid gland in four patients and the submandibular gland in the rest one. The histologic grades were low in one patient, intermediate in two patients and high in other two. In our experience, the common cytologic findings of low grade subtype were predominent mucous cells with some intermediate cells in an abundant mucinous background. The cytologic findings of intermediate grade subtype were predominant clusters of intermediate cells with or without mucous cells in an abundant mucinous background. And the cytologic findings of high grade subtype were predominant clusters of epidermoid cells with intermediate cells in a bloody background. Cytologic pleomorphism and atypia were more severe in high grade than low and intermediate grade, and nucleoli were more frequently noted in epidermoid cells. In low grade, it is very difficult to decide the benignancy or malignancy of the tumor. In fact, the presence of mucous cells in a mucinous background should rule out any other type of well differentiated carcinoma.

  • Doenjang, a traditional Korean fermented soybean paste, is made by mixing and ripening meju with high salt brine (approximately 18%). Meju is a naturally fermented soybean block prepared by soaking, steaming, and molding soybean. To understand living bacterial community migration and the roles of bacteria in the manufacturing process of doenjang, the diversity of culturable bacteria in meju and doenjang was examined using media supplemented with NaCl, and some physiological activities of predominant isolates were determined. Bacilli were the major bacteria involved throughout the entire manufacturing process from meju to doenjang; some of these bacteria might be present as spores during the doenjang ripening process. Bacillus siamensis was the most populous species of the genus, and Bacillus licheniformis exhibited sufficient salt tolerance to maintain its growth during doenjang ripening. Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, the major lactic acid bacteria (LAB) identified in this study, did not continue to grow under high NaCl conditions in doenjang. Enterococci and certain species of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) were the predominant acid-producing bacteria in meju fermentation, whereas Tetragenococcus halophilus and CNS were the major acid-producing bacteria in doenjang fermentation. We conclude that bacilli, LAB, and CNS may be the major bacterial groups involved in meju fermentation and that these bacterial communities undergo a shift toward salt-tolerant bacilli, CNS, and T. halophilus during the doenjang fermentation process.

  • Ni-20Cr-20Fe-5Nb alloy with or without $Y_2O_3$ was manufactured by mechanical alloying process and consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The grain size of the alloy with $Y_2O_3$ was smaller than that of alloy without $Y_2O_3$ which results from the effect of $Y_2O_3$ suppressing grain growth. The tensile strength at room temperature was increased by the addition of $Y_2O_3$ but decreased abruptly at temperature above $600^{\circ}C$. It seems to result from the change of deformation mechanism due to fine grain size, that is, grain boundary sliding is predominant at above $600^{\circ}C$ while internal dislocation movement is predominant at below $600^{\circ}C$. After conventional heat treatment process of solution treatment and aging, a small amount of ${\delta}(Ni_3Nb)$ phase was formed in Ni-20Cr-20Fe-5Nb alloy while a large amount of ${\gamma}"(Ni_3Nb)$ was formed in Inconel 718 in the previous report. This is due to exhaustion of Nb content by the formation of NbC during consolidation.

  • Zooplankton was sampled vertically with a Norpac net from Gamag Bay in April, July, September and December, 2001. Copepods were predominant in April and December, and cladocerans in July and Noctituca scintillans in September, respectively. There are high spatio-temporal fluctuations in the abundance of zooplankton with a range of 22-17,197 indiv.$m^3$. In the copepod community, neritic species, Eurytemora pacifica, Acartia omorii, Centropages abdominalis and Calanus sinicus were predominant in April ; Labidocera rotunda and A. erythraea in July; A. erythraea and Paracalanus parvus s. 1. in September; A. omorii and E. pacifica in December. However, oceanic species Eucalanus sp. and Neocalanus sp. were abundant in September. It indicates that although Gamag Bay is semi-closed, the distribution pattern of zooplankton is seasonally strongly affected by oceanic waters in addition to neritic ones.

  • A noncompartmented microbial fuel cell (NCMFC) composed of a Mn(IV)-carbon plate and a Fe(III)-carbon plate was used for electricity generation from organic wastewater without consumption of external energy. The Fe(III)-carbon plate, coated with a porous ceramic membrane and a semipermeable cellulose acetate film, was used as a cathode, which substituted for the catholyte and cathode. The Mn(IV)-carbon plate was used as an anode without a membrane or film coating. A solar cell connected to the NCMFC activated electricity generation and bacterial consumption of organic matter contained in the wastewater. More than 99% of the organic matter was biochemically oxidized during wastewater flow through the four NCMFC units. A predominant bacterium isolated from the anode surface in both the conventional and the solar cell-linked NCMFC was found to be more than 99% similar to a Mn(II)-oxidizing bacterium and Burkeholderia sp., based on 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The isolate reacted electrochemically with the Mn(IV)-modified anode and produced electricity in the NCMFC. After 90 days of incubation, a bacterial species that was enriched on the Mn(IV)-modified anode surface in all of the NCMFC units was found to be very similar to the initially isolated predominant species by comparing 16S rDNA sequences.

  • Bioenzyme was made up of two predominant strain, which were nomenclated PN-1 and PN-2, respectively. PN-1 possessed spore forming ability, motility, gram positive, catalase activity, but didn't have oxidase activity, urease activity, nitrate reduction and indole forming ability. Taxonomical characteristics of the PN-2 were similar to PN-1 strain, but colony color of PN-2 was yellow-white and nitrate reduction ability was positive. Predominant strains were ascertained by physiologically and morphologically. PN-1 and PN-2 were identified Bacillus lichenifonnis and Bacillus thuringinensis, respectively. Yield of lettuce significantly increased in first and second bioenzyme treatment. Fresh weight, length of shoot, width of leaves significantly increased in N,P,K and N,P,K followed by Bioenzyme application.

  • Three kinds of microoganisms were isolated and identified from the ginseng and ginseng products to research the properties of the molds which spoil the ginseng and ginseng products. The results obtained were as follows: (1) The predominant strains on ginseng products were Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp.-A and Penicillium sp.-B. These predominant fungi deteriorated ginseng products exclusively, (2) Aspergillus sp. showed the greatest mycelial growth at $40^{\circ}C$ and its optimum pH was 5, meanwhile Pencillium sp. showed the greatest mycelial growth at $30^{\circ}C$ and its optimum pH was 3. (3) The growth of the isolated strains was stimulated with the increase in the concentration of saponin at the lower concentration, meanwhile it was inhibited at 1.0% concentration of saponin.

  • A weed population has been mainly analyzed through vegetative analysis method in ecology. However, this method is difficult to understand a detailed feature of weed dominance in terms of region and a particular weed species. Since GIS(Geographic Information System) tool has been introduced, this constraint was able to be solved. GIS analysis for the nationwide weed survey data in 1981 revealed that most predominant weed was Monochoria vaginalis and this species predominated mostly in a western part of Chungnam, a part of Kyunggi, a northern and southern part of Kyungbuk province of Korea. Eleocharis kuroguwai which was the most predominant weed species in 1992 was occurred at southern part of Kyunggi, central and western parts of Chungnam, and southern western part of Chumnam at the GIS analysis. GIS analysis was proven to give much more detailed information than vegetative analysis of weed population and this means that a data analysis by GIS would be used for operating a high effective control strategy against target weed species and site.

  • The effects of impurities of the quartz raw materials on the trasformation of quartz to cristobalite were investigated. As the increase of impurities content, the amount of cristobalite crystal increased, whereas the fusion temperature of quartz and the formation temperature of cristobalite decreased. And the courses of the transformation of quartz to cristobalite were examined. The course of quartz $\rightarrow$ transitional noncrystalline phase $\rightarrow$ melt (T) and quartz $\rightarrow$ transitional noncrystalline phase $\rightarrow$ cristobalite $\rightarrow$ melt (C) were always coexisted on the transformation of quartz. In the case of high purity quartz raw material, the T course was predominant, while in low purity quartz raw material, the C course was predominant. And the calculated density of heat treated sand by the quantitative analysis of quartz and cristobalite phase by XRD is well agreed with the measured density by pycnometer. On the melting proces of quartz glass, the volume expansion of sand at a certain temperature can be estimated with the calculated density data.
