  • Mode shapes and natural frequencies of vibrating laminated composite plates are taken using real-time and time-average holographic interferometry. Debonds and delamination in the laminated plates are measured nondestructively. During holographic testing of composite plates, it has been found that the conditions for the local resonance in debonds are strongly dependent on the frequency of excitation. A membrane resonance model was proposed to describe this behavior. Relations between characteristic length according to the size, shape of debonds and membrane resonance frequency are presented. Several experiments were performed to verify the membrane resonance model. The agreements between the predicted excitation frequency and the observed resonance frequency are good. The experimental results show that higher stresses and strains due to local resonance lead to the debond detection.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the static strength of long-span PSC deck slabs. In the previous study, the minimum thickness of PSC deck slabs in the composite two-girder bridge was proposed. To examine the structural behavior and safety of the PSC deck slabs designed in accordance with the proposed minimum thickness, 1/3 scaled PSC deck slabs in the composite two-girder bridge were tested under the static loading. The test results were compared with the predicted values proposed by the code and Matsui. Test results showed ultimate static strength of the PSC deck slabs designed in accordance with the proposed minimum thickness have enough margin of safety. The static failure mode of each test specimen was punching shear mode.

  • Ice loads can determined by many factors like ice properies and dimension, velocity and type of structures. The magnitude of ice load varies with the failure mode which can be predicted by failure maps if the aspect ratio and strain rate are known. To reduce the ice force, various types of structure have been investigated and it is now known that the identor shape plays an important role in reducing ice load on Arctic offshoe structures. The conical and wedge structures are good applied examples in the Arctic region. In this study, ice forces on single wedge indentors are investigated for crushing failure mode. The ice loads on wedged indentors are compared with those on cylindrical structures. Also the concept of "ice annual"is introduced to verify the ice loads to multi and single wedge structures.tructures.

  • The response analysis of frame structure with open section beams considering warping conditions and short duration load have been performed. When a beam of frame structure is subjected under torsional moment, the cross section will deform a warping as well as twist. For some thin-walled sections warping will be large, and accompanying warping restraint will induce axial and shear stresses and reduce the twist of beam which stiffens the beam in torsion. Because of impact or blast loads, the wave propagation effects become increasingly important as load duration decreases. This paper presents that a warping restraint in finite element model effects the behavior of beam deformation, dynamic mode shape and response analysis. The computer modelling of frame is discussed in linear beam element model and linear thin shell element model, also presents a correlation between computer predicted and actual experimental results for static deflection, natural frequencies and mode shapes of frame. A method to estimate the number of normal modes that are important is discussed.

  • This paper presents an analytical results on limits of debonding failure for RC beams strengthened with near-surface mounted(NSM) CFRP strips. An analytical model was derived to predict the failure mode and the maximum load. An analytical model has two assumptions. The first is that the debonding failure occurs at the epoxy-concrete interfaces. The second is that the debonding failure occurs at the end of the FRP reinforcement due to concentration of shear stress. Results of the comparison of existing test data and analytical model data have predicted the failure mode and the maximum load well. Also, this paper proposed limits of debonding failure to prevent the debonding using the strengthening area and the groove depth.

  • This paper deals with the modal analysis and the displacement of stator due to electromagnetic forces in Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM). A free-free model of the stator based on structural 3-dimensional Finite Element Method(FEM) is used for investigation the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the stator. In addition, The displacement caused by magnetic force acting on stator pole is analyzed by the structural FEM coupled with the magnetic force. From these results, the resonance speed is obtained by the relation of the natural frequencies of the harmonic frequencies of magnetic force. And, the eccentricity with respect to rotor is predicted from the analysis result of the mechanical displacement of stator. The natural frequencies of stator are compared with experimental ones measured by modal testing.

  • Distributed Generation (DG) is predicted to play a important role in electric power system in the near future. insertion of DG system into existing distribution network has great impact on real-time system operation and planning. It is widely accepted that micro turbine generation (MTG) systems are currently attracting lot of attention to meet customers need in the distributed power generation market. In order to investigate the performance of MT generation systems, their efficient modeling is required. This paper presents the modeling and simulation of a MT generation system suitable for isolated operation. The system comprises of a Permanent magnet synchronous generator driven by a MT. A brief description of the overall system is given, and mathematical models for the MT and permanent magnet synchronous generator are presented. Also, the use of power electronics in conditioning the power output of the generating system is demonstrated. Simulation studies with MATLAB/Simulink have been carried out in islanding operation mode of a DG system.

  • A dynamic simulation for a high-speed pantograph-overheadline has been performed using mode superposition method to predict contact forces between pantograph and overheadline. We can deal with non-linear dampers of the pantograph and pre-sag of overhead-line for the simulation. But, we can not consider slackness of dropper in the overhead-line. According to the simulation results, the contact forces and displacements are reasonably predicted, compared with other foreign simulation results.

  • Recent research efforts on study of silicon photonics utilizing stimulated Raman scattering have largely overlooked temperature effects. In this paper, we incorporated the temperature dependences into the key parameters governing wave propagation in silicon waveguides with Raman gain and investigated how the temperature affects the solution of the coupled-mode equations. We then carried out, as one particular application example, a numerical analysis of the performance of wavelength converters based on stimulated Raman scattering at temperatures ranging from 298 K to 500 K. The analysis predicted, among other things, that the wavelength conversion efficiency could decrease by as much as 12 dB at 500 K in comparison to that at the room temperature. These results indicate that it is necessary to take a careful account of temperature effects in designing, fabricating, and operating Raman silicon photonic devices.

  • Since guided missiles with the characteristics of the one-shot system remain stored throughout their entire life cycle, it is important to maintain their storage reliability until the launch. As part of maintaining storage reliability, period of preventive test is set up to perform preventive periodic test, in this case failure detection rate has a great effect on setting up period of preventive test to maintain storage reliability. The proposed method utilizes failure rate predicted by the software on the basis of MIL-HDBK-217F and failure mode analyzed through FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) using data generated from the actual field. The failure detection rate of using the proposed method is applied to set periodic test of the actual guided missile. The proposed method in this paper has advantages in accuracy and objectivity because it utilizes a large amount of data generated in the actual field.
