  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the relative weight gain at 2-week intervals up to 6 weeks after birth to predict retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) requiring treatment among very low birth weight infants. Methods: A total of 211 preterm infants with birth weights <1,500 g and gestational age <32 weeks were retrospectively reviewed. The main outcome was the development of ROP requiring treatment. Body weight measurements were recorded daily. Relative weight gains (g/kg/day) were calculated at the second, fourth, and sixth week after birth. Results: Of the 211 infants, 89 developed ROP, of which 41 spontaneously regressed and 48 with early treatment of ROP type I required laser treatment. The relative weight gain at 2, 4, and 6 weeks postnatal age was significantly lower in infants with ROP requiring treatment than in infants without ROP or those with spontaneous regression (P<0.001, P=0.005, and P=0.004, respectively). On logistic regression, poor relative weight gain in the first 2 weeks was found to be related to ROP requiring treatment (adjusted odds ratio, 0.809; 95% confidence interval, 0.695-0.941; P=0.006). Relative weight gain at 2 weeks postnatal age was significantly lower in infants with ROP requiring treatment compared to that in ROP requiring no treatment (P=0.012). Conclusion: Poor postnatal weight gain in the first 2 weeks of life is an important and independent risk factor for ROP requiring treatment. Postnatal weight gain can predict the development of severe ROP requiring treatment.

  • This study was carried out to explore the accuracy of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for the prediction of chemical and fermentation parameters of whole crop winter rye silages. A representative population of 216 fresh winter rye silages was used as database for studying the possibilities of NIRS to predict chemical composition and fermentation parameters. Samples of silage were scanned at 1 nm intervals over the wavelength range 680~2,500 nm and the optical data recorded as log 1/Reflectance (log 1/R) and scanned in fresh condition. NIRS calibrations were developed by means of partial least-squares (PLS) regression. NIRS analysis of fresh winter rye silages provided accurate predictions of moisture, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), crude protein (CP) and pH as well as lactic acid content with correlation coefficients of cross-validation ($R^2cv$) of 0.96, 0.86, 0.79, 0.85, 0.82 and 0.78 respectively and standard error of cross-validation (SECV) of 1.89, 2.02, 2.79, 1.14, 1.47 and 0.46 % DM respectively. Results of this experiment showed the possibility of NIRS method to predict the chemical parameters of winter rye silages as routine analysis method in feeding value evaluation and for farmer advice.

  • Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has become increasingly used as a rapid and accurate method of evaluating some chemical compositions in forages and feedstuff. This study was carried out to explore the accuracy of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for the prediction of chemical parameters of fresh whole crop barley silages. A representative population of 284 fresh whole crop barley silages was used as a database for studying the possibilities of NIRS to predict chemical composition. Samples of silage were scanned at 1 nm intervals over the wavelength range 680~2,500 nm and the optical data were recorded as log 1/Reflectance (log 1/R) and were scanned in fresh condition. NIRS calibrations were developed by means of partial least-squares (PLS) regression. • Perichondrium is generally used for reconstruction of airway and successful regeneration of cartilage framework using perichondrium are reported by several authors. It has many advantages for airway reconstruction. It can maintain the stable framework and it has higher flexibility so it's easy to design according to the shape of defects. It resist strongly against infection process. Its airtightness and rapid mucosalization enables to predict good postoperative recovery and results. To investigate the differences in cartilage regeneration between avascular and vascularized perichondrial flap, this study was designed with vascularized flaps composed of vascularized perichondrium and central auricular artery and vein. Morphologic study was performed to determine the fate of the grafted perichondrium at regular intervals using light microscopy with H & E stain. Chondrogenic potential and formation of cartilaginous plate of experimental group was superior than in the control group. Grafted perichondrium was fed by consistent feeding vessel. At 6 weeks, the regenerated cartilage could hardly be distinguished form the normal cartilage framework but in control group, regenerated cartilaginous tissue was generally immature in same period. In conclusion, this study indicated that consistent vasculature to grafed tissue is the essential factor for successful reconstruction of cartilaginous framework.

  • The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) demonstrated a method for monitoring the performance of instrument channels in Topical Report (TR) 104965, 'On-Line Monitoring of Instrument Channel Performance.' This paper presents the results of several models originally developed by EPRI to monitor three nuclear plant sensor sets: Pressurizer Level, Reactor Protection System (RPS) Loop A, and Reactor Coolant System (RCS) Loop A Steam Generator (SG) Level. The sensor sets investigated include one redundant sensor model and two non-redundant sensor models. Each model employs an Auto-Associative Kernel Regression (AAKR) model architecture to predict correct sensor behavior. Performance of each of the developed models is evaluated using four metrics: accuracy, auto-sensitivity, cross-sensitivity, and newly developed Error Uncertainty Limit Monitoring (EULM) detectability. The uncertainty estimate for each model is also calculated through two methods: analytic formulas and Monte Carlo estimation. The uncertainty estimates are verified by calculating confidence interval coverages to assure that 95% of the measured data fall within the confidence intervals. The model performance evaluation identified the Pressurizer Level model as acceptable for on-line monitoring (OLM) implementation. The other two models, RPS Loop A and RCS Loop A SG Level, highlight two common problems that occur in model development and evaluation, namely faulty data and poor signal selection

  • Ball reducer (HERB Drive: High Efficient Wave Rolling Ball Drive) with waved grooves has many advantages over other types of reducers for high-reduction ratio, low noise and low energy loss, etc. The mechanism of force transmission is very similar to that of cam and follower in automobile valve train system especially in contact behaviors. In this study, we have investigated the traces of contact between ball and outer ring, and the dynamic contact behaviors of elastohydodynamic lubrication(EHL) with a certain reduction ratio. In order to verify the contact behaviors between ball and outer ring for the critical endurance lift, the contact velocity and load are computed for a cycle. During some intervals of a cycle, the contact velocity reverses its direction very suddenly. It is expected that changing the contact direction causes undesirable endurance performance because EHL film frequently col lapse at the moment of velocity reversal. From the computational investigation in this work, we hope to predict similar contact damages in other machinery due to this kind of contact behaviors, which is very typical in many contact phenomena.

  • An orbital grinding system uses a special motion to machine crankshafts in ships. When a crankshaft is operated, eccentric pins rotate and a grinding wheel moves in order to grind the pins. Thermal error caused by heat generated in the grinding process decreases the quality of the final product. In this study, the thermal error of an orbital grinding system caused by heat generation was investigated in order to predict the extent of thermal error that can occur during the grinding process. Since the machine position changes during orbital grinding, the pin part is divided into 30 degree intervals and heat is generated. Total thermal error was measured by summing the thermal errors associated with the pin and the grinding wheel. Total thermal error was found to reach a maximum at 60 degrees and a minimum at 210 degrees because of the shape of the crankshaft.

  • Near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy(NIRS) was used to determine the humic acids in soil samples from the fields of different crops and land-use over Youngnam and Honam regions in Korea. An InfraAlyzer 500 scanning spectrophotometer was obtained near infrared relectance spectra of soil at 2-nm intervals from 1100 to 2500nm. Multiple linear regression(MLR) or partial least square regression (PLSR) was used to evaluate a NIRS method for the rapid and nondestructive determination of humic acid, fulvic acid and its total contents in soils. The raw spectral data(log 1/R) can be used for estimating humic acid, fulvic acid and its total contents in soil by MLR procedure between the content of a given constituent and the spectral response of several bands. In which the predicted results for fulvic acid is the best in the constituents. The new spectral data are converted from the raw spectra by PLSR method such as the first derivative of each spectrum can also be used to predict humic acid and fulvic acid of the soil samples. A low SEC, SEP and a high coefficient of correlation in the calibration and validation stages enable selection of the best manipulation. But a simple calibration and prediction method for determining humic acid and fulvic acid should be selected under similar accuracy and precision of prediction. NIRS technique may be an effective method for rapid and nondestructive determination for humic acid, fulvic acid and its total contents in soils.

  • A simple and quick method based on the transient diffusion theory for predicting the steady state rate of penetration of a drug after transdermal drug administration was proposed. The amount of drug entering the stratum corneum was determined by 20 strippings with an adhesive tape. From the profile of the amount of drug as a function of the number of strippings, the quantity of drug on the surface of stratum corneum was extrapolated. Based on the amounts of drug entering the stratum corneum during two time intervals $(t_1\;and\;t_2)$ within 1 hour after the application, the diffusion and partition coefficient were determined. Once the diffusion coefficient of the drug in the stratum corneum and the partition coefficient (stratum corneum/vehicle) were determined from the present approach, the steady-state flux of penetration across the stratum corneum was calculated. The steady-state rates of penetration of ascorbic acid and estradiol across hairless mouse skin were evaluated from this approach and compared with those obtained from ill vitro penetration experiment using excised hairless mouse skin. The data confirmed that the proposed method can predict the steady-state rate of penetration of these drugs across the stratum corneum.

  • A study was conducted on four maize cultivars to determine the dry matter and fibre digestibility as influenced by advancing plant age. Samples of maize cultivars Akbar, Neelum, UM-81 and IZ-31 were harvested at weekly intervals/ growth stages. The samples of morphological fractions such as leaf and stem were also collected at various growth stages. Whole mixed fodder and different fractions of maize plant were analysed for their chemical composition and in vitro digestibility. The results showed that in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of whole maize plant, leaf and stem decreased significantly with advancing stage of maturity. Digestibility of NDF, ADF, hemicellulose and cellulose decreased significantly in all plant parts with advancing plant age/growth stages. Maximum values for the digestibility of dry matter and various cell wall constituents were observed in leaf, followed by whole plant and stem fractions. Cultivars were observed to have significant effect of IVDMD and digestibility of NDF, ADF and cellulose in all plant fractions. The results indicated that digestibility of maize fodder was affected by stage of maturity and cultivars. However, maturity had a greater effect on digestibility in all plant fractions than did cultivars. Dry matter contents were found to be significantly and negatively correlated with IVDMD of whole plant and its leaf and stem fractions. Based on correlations, regression equations were computed to predict IVDMD.
