  • Crystalline TiO2 ultrafine powders were prepared simply by heating and stirring aqueous TiOCl2 solution with {{{{ {Ti }^{4+ } }} concentration of 0.5 M from room temperature to 10$0^{\circ}C$ under 1 atmoshpere. The crystallinity and the particle shape of TiO2 ultrafine powders obtained by simple precipitation method were analyzed us-ing XRD(X-ray diffractometer). SEM(scanning electron microscopy) and TEM(transmission electron mi-croscopy) TiO2 crystalline precipitate with rutile phases is fully formed at the temperatures of up to $65^{\circ}C$ and then TiO2 crystalline precipitate with anatase phase starts to be formed above temperatures $65^{\circ}C$ showing its full formation at 10$0^{\circ}C$ These behaviors of TiO2 crystalline precipitate directly from an aqueous TiOCl2 solution would be caused due to the existence of {{{{ OMICRON ^2+ }} ions from distilled water which oxydize TiOCl2 to TiO2 not hydrolyzing it to Ti(OH)4 Here thermodynamically stable TiO2 rutile phase generally formed at higher temperature is practically precipitated at lower temperatures in this study This may be due to the precipitation by very slow reaction enough to make TiO2 particles allocated into stable rutile structure.

  • We report a novel method to synthesize nanocomposites composed of titania nanoparticles and phosphotungstate ions with various composition ratios ranging from W/Ti = 12/10 to 12/500 by inducing the electrostatic interaction between the positively charged protonated titania sol-particles and the negatively charged phosphotungstate anions to flocculate and precipitate. The precipitates showed varied features depending on the composition. The precipitate from the tungsten-richest W/Ti = 12/10 reaction is amorphous in its powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy data. This material shows the Type II adsorption characteristics in its N2-adsorption isotherm, but with quite low surface area of 34 m2/g. To the contrary, the precipitates from the titanium-richer reactions (W/Ti = 12/50- 12/500) are composed of anatase nanoparticles of 2-6 nm by XRD, TEM and Raman and show the Type I adsorption characteristics. The surface area linearly increases with the titanium content from 131 m2/g for W/ Ti = 12/50 to 228 m2/g for 12/500. The precipitate from the reaction with the intermediate composition W/Ti = 12/20 is composed of anatase nanoparticles and does not have any pore accessible to N2. With the wide variety of the physical properties of the precipitates, the present method can be a novel, viable means to tailor synthesis of nanocomposite materials. A formation mechanism of the precipitates is based on the electrostatic interactions between the titania nanoparticles and phosphotungstate ions.

  • The <100> oriented $Fe_{83}Ga_{17}$ alloys with various contents of NbC or B were prepared by directionally solidification method at the growth rate of $720mm{\cdot}h^{-1}$. With a small amount of precipitates, the columnar grains grew with cellular mode during directional solidification process, while like-dendrite mode of grains growth was observed in the alloys with higher contents of 0.5 at% due to the dragging effect of precipitates on the boundaries. The NbC precipitates disperse both inside grains and along the boundaries of $Fe_{83}Ga_{17}$ alloys with NbC addition, and the Fe2B secondary phase particles preferentially distribute along the grain boundaries in B-doped alloys. Precipitates could affect grain growth and improved the <100> orientation during directional solidification process. Small amount of precipitate element addition slightly increased the magnetostrictive strain, and a high value of 335 ppm under pre-stress of 15 MPa was achieved in the alloys with 0.1 at% NbC. Despite the fact that the effect on magnetic induction density of small amount of precipitates could be negligible, the coercivity markedly increased with addition of precipitate element for $Fe_{83}Ga_{17}$ alloy due to the retarded domain motion resulted by precipitates.

  • In this study, we applied an increased surface area fractional precipitation with hydrophilic polymer for decreasing the particle size of the anticancer agent paclitaxel from plant cell cultures. The addition of polymer resulted in a considerable decrease in the size of the paclitaxel precipitate. Among the polymers (HPMC 2910, PVP-K90, PVA) used, PVP-K90 was the most effective for the inhibition of precipitate growth. When PVP-K90 (0.2%, w/v) was used, the paclitaxel particles were four to five times smaller, having less than a $20{\mu}m$ radius, than those obtained in the absence of the polymer. In addition, the precipitate size was inversely correlated with the absolute value of zeta potential.

  • Intergrowth texture of biotite and chlorite crystals within an amphibolitic schist of the northwestern Okchon metamorphic belt was investigated using back-scattered electron (BSE) imaging and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). BSE images show that thin chlorite and biotite packets are mixed along (001) plane to result in intergrowth texture. In addition, rutile particles of submicron size occur exclusively at the boundaries between biotite and chlorite stacks. HRTEM investigation and remnant biotite layers are closely associated with such boundaries, suggestinga possibility that chlorite layers were formed from biotite during retrograde metamorphic reaction. Such intepretation of the origin of intergrowth texture can be further supported biotite is approximately 2 w%, and that of chlorite usually lower than 0.2 wt%. Ti was apparently leached out during the alteratin of biotite to precipitate rutile particles at the such rutile particles could be an important indicator showing that the intergrowth texture of chlorite and biotite is originated by a retrograde metamorphism rather than by incomplete chlorite-to-biotite reaction during prograde metamorphism. Biotite crystals contain intercalated chlorite layers will result in somewhat high Mg and Al, and the use of such inhomogeneous biotite will result in impreciese geothermobarometric calculations.

  • TEM specimen preparation methods have been examined to characterize Cu oxide particles in the polyimide film. Polyimide films were prepared by coating polyamic acid onto Cu films which had been deposited on TEM-mask and glass substrates and Cu foil, followed by thermal curing. In case of TEM-mask, direct observation was possible without further preparation. In other cases, TEM specimen were made by separating polyimide film from the substrate. Polyimide films were removed from glass and Cu foil by dissolving glass in HF solution and Cu foil in $H_{2}SO_{4}$ solution. TEM-mask observation confirms that fine $Cu_{2}O$ particles precipitate in the polyimide as a result of reaction of polyamic acid with Cu. However $Cu_{2}O$ particle reacts with HF and $H_{2}SO_{4}$ solution during dissolving the substrate and interpretation could be misled. It is concluded characterization of $Cu_{2}O$ particle in polyimide using TEM-mask is better than other methods.

  • When rivers and lakes are contaminated with numerous contaminants, usually the contaminants are finally deposited on the sediments of the waterbody. Many clean up technologies have been developed for the contaminated sediments. Among several technologies dredging is one of the best methods because dredging removes all the contaminated sediments from the water and the contaminated sediments can be completely treated with physical and chemical methods. However the most worried phenomenon is suspension of fine particles during the dredging process. The suspended particle can release contaminants into water and resulted in spread of the contaminants and the increase of risk due to the resuspension of the precipitated contaminants such as heavy metals and toxic organic compounds. Therefore the success of the dredging process depends on the prevention of resuspension of fine particles. Advanced dredging processes employ pumping the sediment with water onto a ship and release the turbid water pumped with sediment into waterbody after collection of sediment solids. Before release of the turbid water into lake or river, just a few minutes allowed to precipitate the suspended particle due to the limited area on a dredging ship. However the fine particle cannot be removed by the gravitational settling over a few minutes. Environmental technology such as coagulation and precipitation could be applied for the settling of fine particles. However, the process needs coagulants and big settling tanks. For the quick settling of the fine particles suspended during dredging process magnetic separation has been tested in current study. Magnetic force increased the settling velocity and the increased settling process can reduce the volume of settling tank usually located in a ship for dredging. The magnetic assisted settling also decreased the heavy metal release through the turbid water by precipitating highly contaminated particles with magnetic force.

  • Hot-water soluble extracts were prepared from medium-sized barks of Siberian larch (Larix gmelineii). The extracts were fractionated by ultrafiltration method for producing uniform quality of adhesives. Molecular weight distribution of the extracts was ranged of 100 to 300.000. pH of the extracts affected amounts of flux, and the range of pH 6~pH 8 was proper for wood adhesives, because of easy concentration and fast gelation time. Removal of particles greater than $0.45{\mu}m$ from the extracts increased both filtration speed (flux) and yields of solids in the filtrates. In ultrafiltration process. operating pressure, filtrate temperature, and flow rate significantly increased with the increase of individual condition. Ultrafiltration using PM10 membrane was very effective to fractionate and concentrate the extracts. Removal of large particles greater than 0.45 m from the extracts increased filtration speed(flux) and yields of solids in the filtrates. A gelation time was accelerated with the increasing pH of the extracts and its concentration. The Stiasny precipitate(26%) from the filtrate obtained by PM 10 membrane was very lower than that(78%) of the retentates. This ultrafiltration method was efficient for obtaining high yield purified phenolic compounds.

  • Wet-chemical process using ammonia to precipitate aluminum ion dissolved in a zirconia sol solution is examined. Formation of crystalline bayerite is unfavorable for fine dispersion of zirconia nanoparticles in alumina matrix after heat treatment. To avoid the bayerite formation, it was preferred to make a precipitation with a diluted ammonia or with an ammonia gas flow at high temperature. By optimizing the precipitation process and the calcination temperature, we successfully prepared the uniform microstructure in which tetragonal zirconia particles of ∼30nm is finely dispersed within the alumina grains.

  • Electroflotation, which is used as an alternative to sedimentation, is a separation treatment process that uses small bubbles to remove low-density particulates. Making allowances for recent collision efficiency diagram based on trajectory analysis, it is necessary to tailor zeta potential of bubbles that collide with negatively charged particles. In this paper, the study was performed to investigate the effects of magnesium and aluminium ions on zeta potential of bubbles. And, it was studied to find out factors which could affect the positively charged bubbles. Consequently, zeta potential of bubbles increased both with higher concentration of metal ions and in the acidic pH value. And, a probable principle that explained the procedure of charge reversal could be a combined mechanism with both specific adsorption of hydroxylated species and laying down of hydroxide precipitate. It also depended on the metal ion concentration in the solution to display its capacity to control the bubble surface.
