  • This experiment was conducted to study the effects of herbicides and their damages to lawn plant for the control of lawn weeds using pre-emergence granule herbicide at the two years old lawn field. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1)Herbicidal damages to lawn grass were observed at the higher concentration than the recommended level in four herbicides used in this trial. The optimum dosages for the control of lawn weeds were 3-6g in Lasso, 3g in Machet, 8-24g in Simazine, and 4g in Trifluralin, respectively. 2)No herbicidal damages was observed in Simazine treatment, whereas Lasso and Machet treatment showed a little and severe herbicidal damages, respectively. The most severe damage was found in Trifluralin treatment, indicating that this herbicide is not suitable for the control of lawn weeds.

  • The minimum concentrations of organic solvents inducing phytotoxicity were investigated after spraying or flooding solvent solutions to annual plants. In the foliar treatment of upland test, solvents with high-boiling point or low-polarity induced severe phytotoxicity. Especially, aromatic solvents induced severe phytotoxicity. The most sensitive plant to phytotoxicity was soybean. In the pre-emergence treatment of upland test, the solvents with high-boiling point only induced phytotoxicity at high concentration. The degree of phytotoxicity induced by foliar spray in the condition of paddy field was similiar to that of upland test, but in the pre-emergence test, the former was more severe than the latter. Among 6 treatments, phytotoxicity induced by solvents was most severe in the pre-emergence test under the condition of flooding paddy field. Generally, alcohols induced severe phytotoxicity, especially, ethanol at 0.001%.

  • To develop a system for the mass production of Protaetia brevitarsislarvae (Pbl), this study analyzed the oviposition characteristics of third instar Pbl through successive rearing and cold treatments. In the first generation, females laid 50 eggs each on average, and spawned higher numbers of eggs for the first 5 days but then fewer after this. However, all of the $2^{nd}$-generation females that were produced through the successive rearing of eggs from the $1^{st}$ generation did not spawn. When test insects (TI) were raised at $32^{\circ}C$, their $mean{\pm}SE$ pupal period and emergence rate were $28.4{\pm}1.9$ days and 87%, respectively. However, most individuals raised in cold treatments ($5^{\circ}C$ and $-5^{\circ}C$) without a pre-cooling period did not survive. Individuals exposed to a pre-cooling period, however, had a 7-10 days longer pupal period than those raised at $32^{\circ}C$, and their emergence rate (90%) was slightly higher. Different cold treatment temperatures ($0^{\circ}C$, $3^{\circ}C$, or $5^{\circ}C$) and periods (30 or 60 days) were tested in further experiments. The experimental group kept for 30 days at $0^{\circ}C$ and $3^{\circ}C$ had the shortest pupal period of all, and emergence rates exceeded 90% in most groups. With respect to the number of eggs spawned by the second generation females after cold treatments, the experimental groups held in cold treatments at $5^{\circ}C$ for 30 and 60 days were found to spawn the most eggs. Consequently, the experimental group kept at $5^{\circ}C$ for 30 days was the most effective set of conditions tested during the entire breeding period.

  • In spite of simple and cheap cultivation method, water broadcast-seeded rice demonstrates uneven and unstable seedling establishment per unit land area and requires more herbicide and labor-input for weed control. Three experiments were conducted in a phytotron at 18$^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the adaptability of seed-mat mulching cultivation technologies in water seeded rice for the uniform seedling establishment and the inhibition of weed occurrence without herbicide application. Five different kinds of mat with different mesh sizes and fabric properties were tested. The emergence of rice was the highest in Lawn-mat treatment, being comparable with the control, in which seeds were sown without mat. The Lawn-mat also exhibited the lowest mat tension. Mat tension may influence the emergence of rice. And once it was soaked in water, it didn't maintain its original shape any more. The emergence rate of rice was the lowest in Safer-mat treatment. In Lawn-mat treatment, which was the most effective for rice emergence in the first study, the differences of emergence and seedling establishment of rice depending on the seeding position (upper, beneath, and between mats) treatments were negligible, while they were higher in dry seeds than in pre-germinated seeds treatment. The emergence as affected by the kinds of mat also showed the same trend when tested using barnyard grass. Depending on the kinds of mat, the inhibition effect of weeds was the greatest in Safer-mat and the poorest in Lawn-mat. These results strongly suggest the possibility that the uniform seedling establishment and weed management without chemical could be achieved simultaneously by seed-mat mulching through the combination of effective mat for the emergence of rice and another efficient mat for the inhibition of weed occurrence. This possibility was also tested in the field.

  • Herbicidal characterisitcs of natural product chrysophanic acid were investigated in a greenhouse condition. At early- and middle-stage post-emergence treatments, several grasses and broadleaf weeds appeared to be very susceptible to chrysophanic acid. However, any significant herbicidal activity treated by pre-emergence did not occur at concentration ranges from 31.3 to 1,000 ug $mL^{-1}$. Herbicidal activity of chrysophanic acid estimated by visual injury for large crabgrass was much higher when applied at 7 to 14 days after seeding than at 21 and 28 days after seeding. By post-emergence treatment, chrysophanic acid caused very considerable phytotoxicity on several grasses and broadleaf crops. In herbicidal interaction experiments determined by Colby's method, the effect of chrysophanic acid and caryophyllene oxide tank-mixture showed very high synergistic activity. Although chrysophanic acid did not give any pre-emergence effect, herbicidal spectrum tended to be very wide and strong when treated by post-emergence. These results suggest that chrysophanic acid possesses a possible potential to develop as a natural herbicide.

  • Pachynematus itoi Okutani emerges three times a year, and overwinters as a pre-pupa in cocoon. First emergence of P. itoi was from 7th May to third June. Second and third emergence was from 20th June to 13th July and fourth to 25th August, respectively. Mean oviposited egg number was 59, and egg period was about 9 days. Hatching rate was >90%. Oviposited egg number was the highest in the first needle cluster of short shoot followed by second and third. P. itoi did not oviposit on single needle (long shoot) of Larix leptolepis (Sieb. et Zucc.). Larva had five instars, and larval period was about 20 days. Larva prefer needle cluster of short shoot to single needle of long shoot. Mature larva descended from host tree and pre-pupa in cocoon overwinter at topsoil.

  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of collected region(Bongpyeong in Gangwon, 690 m, Mt. Halla in Jeju, 1,085 m), pre-treatment (stratification, soaked in distilled water or $GA_3$) and shading (control, 50%, 80%) on seed emergence and seedlings growth of Ligularia fischeri. The result showed that seed emergence (%) of L. fischeri were 6.9~75.5% (Gangwon : 6.9~32.8%, Halla : 22.2~75.5%). Maximum seed emergence (%) of 32.8 (Gangwon) and 75.5 (Halla) were achieved for seeds were stratified, soaked in distilled water, and under non-shading for L. fischeri (Gangwon), whereas seeds were stratified, soaked in $GA_3$ 100 ppm, and under 80% shading for L. fischeri (Halla). In this study, the best seedling vigor index (SVI) of L. fischeri (Gangwon) and L. fischeri (Halla) were obtained when seeds were stratified, soaked in distilled water, and under 50% shading. The survival rate of potted seedlings for L. fischeri (Halla) were 100% of all shading conditions, but there were decreased by 77.8%, 61.1%, 55.6%, as an increasing shading rate (con, 50%, 80%) for L. fischeri (Gangwon). Therefore, good seedlings were obtained when seed (Mt. Halla) of L. fischeri were stratified, soaked in distilled water, and under 50% shading, and then seedlings were transferred in pot.

  • This article is about the emergence of Islamic modernism among Cham Muslim communities in Cambodia and Cochinchina during the early 20th century. Based on a combined critical reading of existing scholarship, historicized first-hand anthropological accounts, as well as archival sources from the National Archives of Cambodia and the Vietnam National Archives II, it argues accounts of modernists in these sources were either (1) cast through a French colonial reading of a Buddhist state lens and (2) cast through a Malay lens, based upon the Kaum Muda/Kaum Tua divide. First, it proceeds with a historical explanation of the emergence of Islam and the discourse used to describe Muslim communities in Vietnamese, French, and Cham language sources. Then, it turns the narrative toward an examination of the emergence of the "Kaum Muda" or "New Group" of reformist-minded modernist Muslims in early 20th century Cambodia. Delineating the networks of these intellectuals as they stretched across the border through Cochinchina, also highlights a pre-existing transnational element to the community, one that well predates current discussions of twenty-first-century transnationalism. Through a combination of the study of multiple language sources and historical methods, the article highlights the importance of polylingualism in the study of the history of Muslims in Southeast Asia.

  • The effects of salt are studied on control of weeds and growth of Korean turfgrass(Zoysia japon-ica Steud.). And the mobility of salt were determined in a lawn field. At post-emergence stage, the growth of the 13 weeds such as Trifolium repens, Erigeron canadensis, Artemisia prieceps, Equi-setum arvense, etc were controlled by treatment of salt and salt water, Pea-annua and Equisetum arvense were tolerant to salt compared with the other 11 weeds. At pre-emergence stage, the salt controlled the germination of the weeds in soil. 300~500 kg /10a salt and 20~30 % salt waterwere enough for the control of weeds, However, salt water injuried the lawngrass except the dormancy stage. The mobility of salt in soil was increased by rainfall. After 160mm of rainfall, the salinity in the soil treated with salt 500kg /l0a was below 0.3 ms/cm in surface soil and about 0.1 ms /cm in soil 30 cm depth. Key words: Soil environmental survey, Korean turfgrass, Salt, Salt water.
