  • An efficient methodology is presented to evaluate the seismic behavior of a Fluid-Elevated Tank-Foundation/Soil system taking the embedment effects into accounts. The frequency-dependent cone model is used for considering the elevated tank-foundation/soil interaction and the equivalent spring-mass model given in the Eurocode-8 is used for fluid-elevated tank interaction. Both models are combined to obtain the seismic response of the systems considering the sloshing effects of the fluid and frequency-dependent properties of soil. The analysis is carried out in the frequency domain with a modal analysis procedure. The presented methodology with less computational efforts takes account of; the soil and fluid interactions, the material and radiation damping effects of the elastic half-space, and the embedment effects. Some conclusions may be summarized as follows; the sloshing response is not practically affected by the change of properties in stiff soil such as S1 and S2 and embedment but affected in soft soil. On the other hand, these responses are not affected by embedment in stiff soils but affected in soft soils.

  • A spiral wound nanofiltration (NF) membrane (GE Osmonics, DK 4040F) was used to remove pesticides from water. Several solutions of single pesticides and their mixtures were prepared. The pesticides initial concentration ranged from ca. 50 ng/L (single pesticide) to ca. 700 ng/L (as sum of 14 pesticides) and progressively increased with time since the NF experiments were carried out in a concentration mode up to a Volume Concentration Ratio, VCR = 10. Permeate flux and pesticides retention were evaluated as a function of the Volume Concentration Ratio. The permeate flux did not practically change by varying VCR. Pesticide retention was found to be around 97-98% both in the cases of single pesticide solutions and different mixtures of pollutants, and was not affected by the VCR. Pesticides concentration in permeate samples was found to be lower than the maximum concentration level fixed in European directive.

  • The purpose of search problem is to maximize the probability of target detection as limited search capability. Especially, as elapsing of time at a point of time of initial information received the target detection rate for searching an expected location due to a moving target such that wrecked ship or submarine decrease in these problems. The algorithm of search problem to a moving target having similar property of above targets should solve the search route as quickly as possible. In existing studies, they have a limit of applying in practice due to increasing computation time required by problem size (i.e., number of search area, search time). In this study, we provide that it takes more reasonable computation time than preceding studies even though extending a problem size practically using an approximate computation of probability.

  • In the past decade, considerable effort has been devoted unsuccessfully to the development of information technology (IT) evaluation frameworks in the information systems area. Based on the literature review in this area and the decision analysis field, two competing evaluation frameworks are developed in this study: the direct evaluation framework and the indirect evaluation framework. A case study on Firm K shows that the latter is more practically efficient and theoretically appropriate but requires the adequate training for practitioners in order not to get confused the weight of an evaluation variable with the product of this weight and the score of the variable. Another finding is that Weill's conversion effectiveness is neither possible nor necessary to measure in the process of evaluating an IT although it is in theory an important concept.

  • Designing test case flows for water crossing operation of a wheeled vehicle is a new attempt for which very limited experiences exist. In this paper, a Function Flow Block Diagram(FFBD) and a Classification Tree Method(CTM) were combined to see if this method is viable to generate the test case flows at the functional analysis stage. It was found that this method can be practically used for the very complicated test case generation.

  • Multimedia services in the cloud have become a popular trend in the big data environment. However, how to efficiently schedule a large number of multimedia services in the cloud is still an open and challengeable problem. Current cloud-based scheduling algorithms exist the following problems: 1) the content of the multimedia is ignored, and 2) the cloud platform is a known parameter, which makes current solutions are difficult to utilize practically. To resolve the above issues completely, in this work, we propose a novel distributed multimedia scheduling to satisfy the objectives: 1) Develop a general cloud-based multimedia scheduling model which is able to apply to different multimedia applications and service platforms; 2) Design a distributed scheduling algorithm in which each user makes a decision based on its local information without knowing the others' information; 3) The computational complexity of the proposed scheduling algorithm is low and it is asymptotically optimal in any case. Numerous simulations have demonstrated that the proposed scheduling can work well in all the cloud service environments.

  • This paper presents novel circuit topology of half-bridge soft-switching PWM inverter type DC-DC high power converter for DC bus feeding power plants. The proposed DC-DC power converter is composed of a typical voltage source-fed, half-bridge high frequency PWM inverter with a high frequency planar transformer link PWM control scheme and parallel capacitive lossless snubbers. The operating principle of the new DC-DC converter treated here is described by using switching mode-equivalent circuits, together with its unique features. All the active power switches in the half-bridge arms and input DC bus lines can achieve ZCS turn-on and ZVS turn-off commutation transitions. The total turn-off switching losses of the power switches can be significantly reduced. As a result, high switching frequency IGBTs can actually be selected in the frequency range of 40[kHz] under the principle of soft-switching. The performance evaluations of the experimental setup are illustrated practically.

  • A new hard problem called the vector decomposition problem (VDP) was recently proposed by Yoshida et al., and it was asserted that the VDP is at least as hard as the computational Diffie-Hellman problem (CDHP) under certain conditions. Kwon and Lee showed that the VDP can be solved in polynomial time in the length of the input for a certain basis even if it satisfies Yoshida's conditions. Extending our previous result, we provide the general condition of the weak instance for the VDP in this paper. However, when the VDP is practically used in cryptographic protocols, a basis of the vector space ${\nu}$ is randomly chosen and publicly known assuming that the VDP with respect to the given basis is hard for a random vector. Thus we suggest the type of strong bases on which the VDP can serve as an intractable problem in cryptographic protocols, and prove that the VDP with respect to such bases is difficult for any random vector in ${\nu}$.

  • Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are widely used in industry. Several types of vision-based AGVs have been studied in order to reduce cost of infrastructure building at floor of workspace and to increase flexibility of changing the navigation path layout. A practical vision-based guideline tracing method is proposed in this paper. A virtual tracing wheel is introduced and adopted in this method, which enables a vision-based AGV to trace a guideline in diverse ways. This method is also useful for preventing damage of the guideline by enforcing the real steering wheel of the AGV not to move on the guideline. Usefulness of the virtual tracing wheel is analyzed through computer simulations. Several navigation tests with a commercial AGV were also performed on a usual guideline layout and we confirmed that the virtual tracing wheel based tracing method could work practically well.

  • In this paper, parallel scrambling techniques are considered for practical use in the SDH transmission and the ATM transmission. In the ATM transmission, there are two ways of transmitting ATM cells - the SDH-based and the cell-based - and the corresponding scrambling techniques differ accordingly. For the SDH transmission and the SDH-based ATM transmission, the FSS (frame synchronous scrambling) is applied to the STM frames : while for the cell-based ATM trans-mission, the DSS(distributed sample scrambling) is used on the ATM cell stream. The parallel scrambling techniques are examined for the FSS and the DSS, and applied to achieve the parallel FSSs for use in the SDH and the SDH-based ATM transmission along with the parallel DSS applicable to the cell-based ATM transmission. The resulting(8, 4) PSRG(parallel shift resister generator) and (8, 16) PSRG based parallel scramblings are directly applicable for the STM-1 rate processing of the STM-4 and STM-16 scramblings, respectively. Likewise, the resulting (1, 8)PSRG and double-sampling-double-correction based parallel scrambling techniques can be practically used for a low-rate processing of the SDH-based and the cell-based ATM signal scrambling respectively.
