  • While environmental pollution being developed, there have been some cases that residents on certain parts of Seoul area have cultivated vegetables in a small scale, and consumed the produce of theirs thinking them not polluted. Therefore the need for study about whether those vegetables and soil were polluted was growing. In this study, Seoul area (Tobong-dong, Chang-dong, Wolgyedong, P'il-dong, Oksu-dong, and Karibong-dong) and Kyanggi area (Changhang, P'och'an, Kap'yang, Yangp'y~ng) where pollution was thought to be less severe than that of the former were selected for the sampling area. Cabbage, pumpkin and young pumpkin were sampled and dried to be analyzed the contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and moisture content was also analyzed. And at the same time 0.1 N-HCl soluble heavy metal content of soil was measured, and the results obtained were descrived as follows. Heavy metal contents of soil in Seoul and Kyonggi were Cd 0.184 ppm, 0.118 ppm, Cr 2.355 ppm, 0.441 ppm, Cu 29.16 ppm, 3.331 ppm, Ni 1.650 ppm, 0.829 ppm, Pb 26.77 ppm, 4.696 ppm, Zn 57.47 ppm, 14.94 ppm respectively. Heavy metal contents of cabbage in Seoul and Kyonggi were Cd 0.407 ppm, 0.241 ppm, Cr 0.388 ppm, 0.402 ppm, Cu 6.853 ppm, 4.486 ppm, Ni 1.479 ppm, 0.878 ppm, Pb 0.812 ppm, 0.258ppm, Zn 112.2 ppm, 54.86ppm respectively. Heavy metal contents of pumpkin in Seoul and Ky6nggi were Cd 0.011 ppm, 0.011 ppm, Cr 0,262 ppm, 0.197 ppm, Cu 3.302 ppm, 2.539 ppm, Ni 0.717 ppm, 0.369 ppm, Pb 0.257 ppm, 0.083 ppm, Zn 28.75 ppm, 14.01 ppm respectively. Correlation between heavy metal contents of soil and those of vegetables was represented high as a whole. In all heavy metals cabbage had higher values of concentrations than those of pumpkin (p<0.001). Concentrations of young pumpkin were higher than those of big pumpkin. It was probably due to the fact that young pumpkin containing not only inner part of pumpkin but also seeds was used as a sample. When classified by region, relatively high concentrations were observed in the samples of Karibong-dong, and in the sample of Jungtang riverside Cd was higher, and in the sample of Namsan Pb was higher than any other district.

  • A survey of pesticide and copper residues of the citrus orchard soil was conducted during October 1979-June 1980 in Jeju, Seogwipo county. The citrus orchards were classified into five groups according to different cultivated period; 5 year orchard, 10 year orchard, 15 year orchard, 20 year orchard, and 30 year orchard. Each of the above samples was divided again to three layers of soil depth; the surface layer$(0{\sim}10cm)$, the middle layer $(10{\sim}20cm)$, and the bottom layer $(20{\sim}40cm)$. In this experiments, Kelthane and Akar, as well as copper residues were detected in all soil samples. Residue levels of above chemicals were increased in soils of orchard with longer cultivation periods, and at the same time, decreased with soil depth. The residues of those ranged as follows; a) from trace to 1.359ppm in Kelthane, b) from trace to 0.925ppm in Akar, and c) from trace to 40.734ppm in copper. It is noted that the average residues of Kelthane was 0.251ppm, Akar, 0.120ppm, and that of copper was 2.168ppm, respectively.

  • The purpose of study was to observe the effect of fluoride and calcium on enamel remineralizaton in vitro. Human premolar enamel specimens were prepared by demineralization in $0.1{\sim}l.0%$ citric acid for 60 minutes. They were remineralized for 6 hours in one of the 1311owing solutions : (1) artificial saliva, (2) artificial saliva with 100ppmF, (3) artificial saliva with 1000ppmF, (4) artificial saliva with 1000ppmCa, and (5) artificial saliva with 100ppmF and 1000ppmCa. No significant remineralization was occurred in artificial saliva and artificial saliva with 100ppmF. Significant remineralization was observed in artificial saliva with 1000ppmF at 3 hours, and in artificial saliva with 1000ppmCa and artificial saliva with 100ppmF and 1000ppmCa at 3 and 6 hours(P<0.05). The remineralization effect of artificial saliva with 100ppmF and 1000ppmCa was greater than that of artificial saliva or artificial saliva with 100ppmF. Addition of F to 100ppm or 1000ppm, addition of Ca to 1000ppm, and increasing the concentration of F from 100ppm to 1000ppm did not significantly increase the remineralization.

  • Fly ashes have been deposited around Youngwol power plant until electrostatic precipitator was installed in 1981. Fresh fly ash samples from electrostatic precipitator and weathered fly ash from ash disposal site were collected from Youngwol power plant, along with 65 soil samples of nearby area to look into the influence of PFA deposit on the soils in surrounding area. In chemistry, EPA does not contain high level of toxic elements and there is no notable concentration of toxic elements in soil near power plant. Total concentrations of Co, Cr, Cu, V, and Zn are 13 ppm, 89 ppm, 73 ppm, 157 ppm and 57 ppm in PFA. Concentrations of theses elements in ash-rich soils are 15 ppm, 78 ppm, 60 ppm, 133 ppm and 68 ppm, and those in ash-poor soils are 19 ppm, 70 ppm, 38 ppm, 91 ppm and 97 ppm. But these metal elements are highly concentrated in magnetic fractions of EPA (Co, 129 ppm; Cr, 217 ppm; Cu, 210 ppm; V, 197 ppm; Zn 90 ppm). Considering the process of long-term weathering of PFA, potentially toxic substances from the ash could be leached into soils and groundwater.

  • This study was conducted to determine the content of trace metals in crops cultivated in Han-riverside, Anyang stream, Tan stream, and Jungryang stream. Trace metals (Pb, Cr, Cd, Fe, Zn, Cu, Hg) were detected in 36 crops, 285 samples by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and Mercury Analyzer. The average concentration of trace metals in crop samples was in the order of Fe (34.592 ppm)>Mn (11.071 ppm)$\geq$Zn(8.853 ppm)>Cu(1.795 ppm)>Cr(0.237 ppm)>Pb(0.100 ppm)>Cd(0.011 ppm)>Hg(0.003 ppm). In crop samples, the contents of Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn, which ranges were 0.004-203.083 ppm, 0.017~22.727 ppm, 0.000~74.373 ppm, 0.080~37.166 ppm, respectively, were relatively higher than those of Pb, Cd, Cr, and Hg, which ranges were 0.000~0.654 ppm, 0.000~0.270 ppm, 0.000~l.229 ppm, 0.000~0.037 ppm, respectively. The concentration of trace metals in crop samples was in the order of leafy vegetables > stem vegetables > root vegetables > fruity vegetables. In the root vegetables, such as radish, the content of Pb was leaf(0.055 ppm)>root(0.035 ppm), that of Cr, leaf (0.118 ppm)>root(0.031 ppm), that of Cd, leaf(0.004 ppm)>root(0.001 ppm), that of Hg, leaf(0.004 ppm)>root(0.001 ppm). As the results, it could be thought that root is the organ which doesn't accumulate the heavy metal ions, but absorb them.
