  • A computer simulation was performed to distinguish quantitatively a color reaction in a urine analysis systems by using the spectral power distribution of LEDs, the spectral reflectance of a urine strip, and the spectral sensitivity of photodiode. The CIE tristimulus values and CIE chromaticity coordinates ware modified to be conformable with real color reactions in a urine strips. Results on color simulation showed a of real color in comparison with those obtained by Colorimeter CM2C(Color Savvy).

  • Ultra Wide Band (UWB) system uses wide band signal, which power spectral density is over all band, It likes as a noise floor, so UWB system can be used without interfering with other communication system. For the first time, we adopted Rayleigh mono pulse antipodal signal which had symmetric characteristic and zero mean. With the power spectral density using stochastic process, we knew that the antipodal signaling scheme removed discrete spectrum and concluded that this had much better spectral suppression, probability of error and data rate than PPM (Pulse Positioning Modulation).

  • Turbulence is a crucial component of dynamics of astrophysical fluids dynamics, including those of ISM, clusters of galaxies and circumstellar regions. Doppler shifted spectral lines provide a unique source of information on turbulent velocities. We discuss Velocity-Channel Analysis (VCA) and its offspring Velocity Coordinate Spectrum (VCS) that are based on the analytical description of the spectral line statistics. Those techniques are well suited for studies of supersonic turbulence. We stress that a great advantage of VCS is that it does not necessary require good spatial resolution. Addressing the studies of mildly supersonic and subsonic turbulence we discuss the criterion that allows to determine whether Velocity Centroids are dominated by density or velocity. We briefly discuss ways of going beyond power spectra by using of higher order correlations as well as genus analysis. We outline the relation between Spectral Correlation Functions and the statistics available through VCA and VCS.

  • In this paper, we proposed the simple and selective method for the order of model that reflected the feature of the heart rate variability without the complicated calculation in the power spectral analysis of heart rate variability using autoregressive model. The power spectral analysis of short-term of heart rate variability using autoregressive have been problem to resolution of spectral estimates by the selective model order. As a result that the proposed method for the order comparative tested with the AIC and the fixed order method, the calculation process could become very simple and select the order which correspond with the feature of the time series. We verified it could removed the noisy power components by the fixed order.

  • This paper presents a structural health monitoring method of aircraft reciprocating engine using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) which analyzes vibration expressed by Averaged Normalized Power Spectral Density (ANPSD). Because ANPSD of the rotating shaft is sensitive to the rotating speed, this paper proposes to use a post-processing method of ANPSD is used to reduce the sensitivity. The PCA extracts compressed information from the post-processed ANPSDs and the information means the difference between current and normal cases of the engine. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method to detect abnormal cases of the engine.

  • Dynamic analysis of the electrical transmission system including transmission towers and cables is carried out by a general purpose structural analysis computer program for examining the wind-resistance of the system The spectral representation method is introduced to generate dynamic wind loads by using the Kaimal's spectrum and the measured wind velocities from wind tunnel tests, respectively. The numerical simulation results show that the responses in the case of the measured wind velocities is slightly larger than those in the case of the code.

  • Sleep is an essential process maintaining the life cycle of the human. In parallel with physiological, cognitive, subjective, and behavioral changes that take place during the sleep, there are remarkable changes in the electroencephalogram (EEG) that reflect the underlying electro-physiological activity of the brain. However, analyzing EEG and relating the results to clinical observations is often very hard due to the complexity and a huge data amount. In this article, I introduce several linear and non-linear tools, developed to analyze a huge time series data in many scientific researches, and apply them to EEG to characterize various sleep states. In particular, the spectral analysis, detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), and synchrony analysis are administered to EEG recorded during nocturnal polysomnography (NPSG) processes and daytime multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT). I report that 1) sleep stages could be differentiated by the spectral analysis and the DFA ; 2) the gradual transition from Wake to Sleep during the sleep onset could be illustrated by the spectral analysis and the DFA ; 3) electrophysiological properties of narcolepsy could be characterized by the DFA ; 4) hypnic jerks (sleep starts) could be quantified by the synchrony analysis.

  • Rapid or on-line coal analysis is of great interest in coal industry as it would allow efficient plant operation. Multivariate analysis has been applied to near-infrared(NIR) spectra coal for investigating the relationship between coal properties(%) (moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur), heating value(kcal/kg) and corresponding near-infrared spectral data. The quantitative analysis was carried out by applying PLS(partial least squares regression) to determine a methodology able to establish a relationship between coal properties and NIR spectral data being applied mathematical pre-treatments for minimizing the physical features of the samples. As a results of the analysis, this technique is able to classify the species of coals and to predict the all coal properties except ash, nitrogen and sulfur. The efficient operation of coal fired power plant is expected owing to real time on-line coal analysis of moisture and heating value.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach to noise estimation incorporating spectral deviation with soft decision scheme to enhance the intelligibility of the degraded speech signal in non-stationary noisy environments. Since the conventional noise estimation technique based on soft decision scheme estimates and updates the noise power spectrum using a fixed smoothing parameter which was assumed in stationary noisy environments, it is difficult to obtain the robust estimates of noise power spectrum in non-stationary noisy environments that spectral characteristics of noise signal such as restaurant constantly change. In this paper, once we first classify the stationary noise and non-stationary noise environments based on the analysis of spectral deviation of noise signal, we adaptively estimate and update the noise power spectrum according to the classified noise types. The performances of the proposed algorithm are evaluated by ITU-T P. 862 perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) under various ambient noise environments and show better performances compared with the conventional method.

  • This paper presents a statistical analysis method for the selection of electroencephalogram (EEG) electrode positions and spectral features to recognize emotion, where emotional valence and arousal are classified into three and two levels, respectively. Ten experiments for a subject were performed under three categorized IAPS (International Affective Picture System) pictures, i.e., high valence and high arousal, medium valence and low arousal, and low valence and high arousal. The electroencephalogram was recorded from 12 sites according to the international 10~20 system referenced to Cz. The statistical analysis approach using ANOVA with Tukey's HSD is employed to identify statistically significant EEG electrode positions and spectral features in the emotion recognition.
