As a vital component of power grids, long-span transmission tower-line systems are vulnerable to wind load excitation due to their high flexibility and low structural damping. Therefore, it is essential to reduce wind-induced responses of tower-line coupling systems to ensure their safe and reliable operation. To this end, a shape memory alloy-bidirectional tuned mass damper (SMA-BTMD) is proposed in this study to reduce wind-induced vibrations of long-span transmission tower-line systems. A 1220 m Songhua River long-span transmission system is selected as the primary structure and modeled using ANSYS software. The vibration suppression performance of an optimized SMA-BTMD attached to the transmission tower is evaluated and compared with the effects of a conventional bidirectional tuned mass damper. Furthermore, the impacts of frequency ratios and SMA composition on the vibration reduction performance of the SMA-BTMD are evaluated. The results show that the SMA-BTMD provides superior vibration control of the long-span transmission tower-line system. In addition, changes in frequency ratios and SMA composition have a substantial impact on the vibration suppression effects of the SMA-BTMD. This research can provide a reference for the practical engineering application of the SMA-BTMD developed in this study.
Harmful algae blooms have become a serious environmental problem in major river basins in Korea. They are known to produce various algal organic matters (AOMs) including intracellular organic matters (IOMs) and extracellular organic matters (EOMs). Generally AOMs cannot be easily removed by coagulation/flocculation process in conventional drinking water plants. AOMs produced by blue-green algae also include various toxins such as Microcystins, Anatoxin-a, and Saxitoxin known to have harmful effects on living organisms in aquatic environment. In this study, toxic effects of EOMs produced by three different algae species (Microcystis sp., Anabaena sp., and Oscillatoria sp.) on zebrafish were investigated using electroencephalography (EEG) recording method, a technology for recording brain activity. Electroencephalographic changes in zebrafish revealed that a low EOM had a negative effect on zebrafish compared to both Anabaena sp. and Oscillatoria sp. at 30 ppm EOM exposures. This result might be due to Microcystins present in EOMs produced by Microcystis sp. As a result of power spectrum density anallysis, exposure to EOMs produced by Microcystis sp. caused a state of vigilance in zebrafish. This EEG based toxicity test can be used to examine effects of harmful materials at low levels on living organisms in an aquatic system.

Commercial deployment of nuclear microreactors presents an opportunity for the industry to rethink its approach to manufacturing, siting, operation and maintenance, and fuel cycle management as certain principles used in grid-scale nuclear projects are not applicable to a decentralized microreactor economy. The success of this nascent industry is dependent on its ability to reduce infrastructure, logistical, regulatory and lifecycle costs. A utility-like 'Central Facility' that consolidates the services required and responsibilities borne by vendors into one or a few centralized locations will be necessary to support the deployment of a fleet of microreactors. This paper discusses the requirements for a Central Facility, its implications on the cost structures of owners and suppliers of microreactors, and the impact of the facility for the broader microreactor industry. In addition, this paper discusses the pre-requisites for eligibility as well as the opportunities for a Central Facility host site. While there are many suitable locations for such a capability across the U.S., this paper considers a facility co-located with the Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant and Savannah River Sites to illustrate how a Central Facility can leverage the existing infrastructure and stimulate a local ecosystem.

Salinity gradient power is a system which sustainably generates electricity for 24 hrs, if the system is constructed at a certain place where both seawater and river water are consistently pumped. Since power is critically determined by the water flux and the salt rejection, a membrane of water-semipermeable aquaporin protein in cell membranes was studied for pressure-retarded osmosis. NaCl was used as a salt, and $NaNO_3$ was used as a candidate to check the ion selectivity. The water flux of biomimetic aquaporin membranes was negligible at a concentration below 2M. Also, there is no remarkable dependence of water flux and ion selectivity on concentrations higher than 3M. Therefore, the biomimetic aquaporin membrane could not be applied into pressure-retarded osmosis; however, if a membrane could overcome the current limitations, the properties shown by natural cells could be accomplished.
The main purpose of this work is the development of water quality level model using the data such as DO, EC, BOD, $COD_{Cr},\;NH_3-N,\;NO_3-N,\;PO_4-P$, T-N, T-P, and SS in 88 agricultural streams of the Han river watersheds. To grant water quality level for each parameters, it divided into 20% respectively in the order of water quality level. On the basis of the lowest water quality level, water quality of streams was assigned. As the result, number of stream corresponding to Level Ⅰ was 0, Level II was 1 stream, Level III was 3 streams, Level IV was 22 streams, and Level V was 62 streams. By standardized canonical discriminant function coefficient, $NO_3-N$ was the highest in 0.427 at the discriminant power. According to discriminant function for water quality level, it was equal to $-4.648+3.246{\times}[NO_3-N],\;-5.084+3.456{\times}[NO_3-N],\;-4.298+3.067{\times}[NO_3-N],\;and\;-7.369+4.396{\times}[NO_3-N]$ from Level II to Level V, respectively. As a result of test at real data of the Han river watersheds in 2007, the suitability of water quality level model was high to 88.4%.
This article studied the character of Bogamri group and trends in the surrounding area through recently excavated stone chambers. The first type of stone chamber constructed at Bogamni cemetry was Northen Kyushu style stone chamber tomb with corridor. However, According to recent survey Wa style vertical stone lined tomb had constructed earlier than these stone chamber along the southwest cost. It is likely that the background of these Wa style stone tomb was the beginning of formal diplomatic relations between Baekje and Wa. At first, grave goods as well as burial had been Wa style, but gradually local burial element and mortuary practices added. And large tomb had beginning to appear. The representative tombs are Yeongam Okyari Jangdong tomb and Naju Gaheugni Shinhueng tomb. They were built in the middle of the fifth century. It is most likely that the location was selected with regard to the use or securing of inland waterway. But the next step, Yeongsangang river style stone chamber with corridor had constructed at Jeongchon tomb. That tomb is very close to Bogamni tombs and structure and grave goods are very similar also. So these two groups were considered to be the same community. Hereby, It is believed that the inland waterway using power had been turned over to Bogamni group. Bogamni group had constantly constructed stone chamber until seventh century. This represent that Bogamni group had thrived as a leading force in the Yeongsangang river basin. After under the direct control of Baekje, Bogamni group had continued the close relationship with Wa. For this reason, Bogamni group had influenced southwest cost as well as Yeongsangang river basin. It can be estimated by the Bogamni style stone chamber founded at islands of Shinan.

Reservoir operation affects the sustainability of a water supply. However, the increase in the temporal and spatial variability of rainfall, attributed to climate change, has led to severe droughts and increased difficulty in maintaining a sustainable discharge at certain locations in a reservoir system operation. In this study, water yield was evaluated using reservoir simulation with varied water supply. Three reservoir system models were simulated for nine reservoirs in the Han River basin. The time-based reliability, volumetric reliability, and resiliency were used to evaluate the results. Each case was simulated by applying firm supply, deficit supply, and deficit supply with historical power release of the Hwacheon Reservoir. As a result of the simulation, all indexes were increased when the deficit supply was applied. In particular, the time-based reliability increased by more than 30%, and the supply reliability increased by about 4%. The result showed that the water supply of the entire water system could be increased when all reservoirs in the water system were operated to supply water and maintain sustainable discharge at the same downstream point. The deficit supply was an efficient reservoir operation method for responding to climate change, especially increased rainfall variability.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) meteorological drought and RDI (Reservoir Drought Index) agricultural drought for Geum river basin. Drought Indices was calculated by collecting data of precipitation and agricultural reservoir water storage rate from 2014 to 2016. To evaluated the correlation between meteorological and agricultural drought, the Pearson correlation and the Receiver Operation Characteristic (ROC) analysis were conducted to evaluate the correlation between meteorological and agricultural droughts. The SPI-6 and RDI showed the highest relationship with Pearson coefficient 0.606 and ROC hit rates 0.722 respectively, and the spatial occurrence patterns of drought using overlapped SPI-6 and RDI, the big differences between the 2 indices were occurred in the upstream areas of Miho stream and Nonsan stream from August to October 2015. The analysis using reservoirs specifications for areas where reservoir droughts occurred was conducted, and the areas showing severe drought of RDI were the reservoir areas having relatively small value of basin magnifying power (BMP). This means that a reservoir has the reaction capability for agricultural drought mainly depending on the reservoir BMP.
According to the improvement of computer's performance, the development of Geographic Information System (GIS), and the activation of offering information, a distributed model for analyzing runoff has been studied a lot in recently years. The distribution model is a theoretical and physical model computing runoff as making target basin subdivided parted. In the distributed model developed by this study, the volume of runoff at the surface flow is calculated on the basis of the parameter determined by landcover data and a two-dimensional diffusion wave equation. Most of existing runoff models compute velocity and discharge of flow by applying Manning-Strickler's mean velocity equation and Manning's roughness coefficient. Manning's roughness coefficient is not matched with dimension and ambiguous at computation; Nevertheless, it is widely used in because of its convenience for use. In order to improve those problems, this study developed the runoff model by applying not only Manning-Strickler's equation but also Chezy's mean velocity equation. Furthermore, this study introduced a power law of exponential friction factor expressed by the function of roughness height. The distributed model developed in this study is applied to 6 events of fan-shape basin, oblong shape test basin and Anseongcheon basin as real field conditions. As a result the model is found to be excellent in comparison with the exiting runoff models using for practical engineering application.
In recent, the integrated water resources management should consider not only existing management objects such as water supply, power generation, and instream flows but also new management objects such as water quantity, water quality, and water habitats which management system is large and complex. Moreover, integrated basin plan or operation are needed for solving conflicts problems between basins and between water usages and to maximize water resources usages. To increase use of optimization method for actual operation and apply various objects, a reservoir operation rule was developed and the KModSim's hydrologic states for integrated water resources management were tested in this study. The simulation results show that the developed operation rules applied in hydrologic states good represent the actual storages of both the Yongdam and the Daecheong Reservoirs so, it is possible to improve the water allocation method usually used in the basin management and manage the integrated basin water resources if new operating rules are applied in optimized programming.
