The failure mode of a pipe due to local wall thinning is increasingly more attention in the nuclear power plant industry. To assess the integrity of locally wall thinned pipe, it is necessary to perform many simulations under various conditions. Because the modeling for locally wall thinned elbow is more complicated than that of straight pipe the efficient modeling method for finite element analysis is necessary. In this study, the more simple efficient modeling method of three-dimensional finite element analysis for locally wall thinned elbow has been suggested and verified. And using the method, the failure mode of local wall thinned elbows that have different thinning lengths and circumferential angles is evaluated. From the results, we concluded that the collapse load of elbows has been decreased by the increase of wall thinning shape factors such as thinning lengths and circumferential angles.
For the analysis of vibrational energy density and intensity of partitioned complex system structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges, A software based on the Power Flow Analysis(PFA) has been developed for the plate elements. The flexural, longitudinal and shear waves in plates are formulated and the joint element equations for multi-coupled plates are fully developed. Also, the wave transmission approach has been introduced to cover the energy transmission and reflection at the joint plate elements. To confirm the validity of the developed PFA software, the submarine-shaped complex structures are used for the analysis of vibration intensity and energy density.
This paper proposes the new hybrid analysis of vibration in the medium to high frequency ranges including PFA and SEA concept. The core part of this method is the applications of coupling loss factor(CLF) instead of power transmission, reflection coefficients in boundary condition. This method shows very promising compared to the classical PFA for the various damping loss factors and wide ranges of frequencies. Besides this paper presents the applicable method in Power Flow Finite Element Method by forming the joint element matrix with CLF. These hybrid concepts are expected to improve SEA and PFA methods in vibration analysis.
Power Flow Analysis (PFA) is developed for the effective predictions of frequency-averaged vibrational response in medium-to-high frequency ranges. In PFA, the power coefficients of semi-infinite structure and for-field energy density are used to predict the vibrational responses of structures. Generally, at high frequencies, PFA can predict narrow-band frequency-averaged vibrational responses of built-up structures. However, in low- to medium frequency ranges, the dynamic responses obtained by PFA represent broad-band frequency-averaged vibrational energy densities. For the prediction of vibrational response variance in Power Flow Finite Element Method (PFFEM), the variances of input power and joint element matrix describing structural coupling relationship are derived. Finally, for the validity of developed formulation, numerical examples for two co-planer plates are performed and the vibrational response variance of the structure are compared with the results of classical and PFFEM solutions.
Power Flow Analysis(PFA) is used as the promising tools for the vibration and noise predictions of complex structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges. When the noise and vibration of a complex structure are analyzed, Power Flow finite Element Method combining PFA with FEM is efficient in vibration analysis, and Power Flow Boundary element Method combining PFA with BEM is usful in noise analysis. PFFEM software, PFADS has been developed for the vibration analysis of coupled system structures. Also, NASPFA, the noise analysis software based on PFBEM, has been developed. Through the several upgrades, the current version PFADS R3 and NASPFA R2 are used for the vibration and noise analysis of system structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges. In this paper, the structure and function of each software are explained, and the vibration and noise levels of vehicle structures predicted by each software are shown.
Recently, the on-off solenoid valves have been focused on core technology in the fields of the production line of semi-conductor chips and the micro fluid chips for bio-medical applications. A key characteristics for on-off solenoid valve, operated by compressed air, are high speed response and great repeatability. Indeed, it is also important to keep the pressure on the cross-sectional area of the poppet to be constant regardless of the fluctuation of the pressure exerted on the ports. In this study, we have designed and analysed the high-speed and high flow rate on-off solenoid valve using the analogy of equivalent magnetic circuit and Finite Element Method (FEM) respectively. In case of poppet, flow field characteristics was analyzed by the variation of poppet and it was able to display flow field by changing the location of the poppet. Also, we verified possibility of the design through the static and dynamic pressure and the 3D simulation using distribution curve of the force by working the front poppet.
Recently, the underwater radiated noises generated from large commercial ships have become a globally important issue. Countries with large ports and environmental protection organizations demand strict safety guidelines in relation to underwater radiated noise. In this paper, the coupled PFFE/PFBE method is used to investigate the vibration and underwater radiated noise of a commercial ship. PFFEM is employed to analyze the vibrational responses of the commercial ship, and PFBEM is applied to analyze the underwater radiation noise. The vibrational energy of the structure is treated as an acoustic intensity boundary condition of PFBEM to calculate the underwater radiation noise. Numerical simulations are presented for the commercial ship under various frequencies, and reliable results are obtained.
In this paper, finite element method was used for flow and strength analysis of AZ31 magnesium alloy under friction stir welding. The simulations were carried out by SYSWELD s/w, and the modeling of sheet was doned by unigraphics NX3 s/w. Welding variables for analysis were rotating speed and welding speed of tool. Also two-way factorial design method was applied to confirm the effect of welding variables on maximum temperature and stress of material used. From these results, the increaser welding speed of tool the decreaser maximum temperature, but the increaser maximum stress. Also the increaser rotating speed of tool the increaser maximum temperature, but the decreaser maximum stress. In addition the increaser welding speed of tool and the decreaser rotating speed of tool, the narrower heat effect zone. Finally rotating speed of tool influenced on maximum temperature more than welding speed of tool, and welding speed of tool influenced on maximum stress more than rotating speed of tool from the variance analysis.
The high pressure cryogenic ball valve is used to transfer the liquefied natural gas which temperature is $-196^{\circ}C$, supplied pressure is $168kgf/cm^2$. In the present work, the temperature distribution and thermal deformation is calculated numerically. The CAR and CFD methods are useful to predict the thermal matter and the inner flow field of high pressure cryogenic ball valve. For this reason, to optimum design of the cryogenic ball valve, the theological behavior of the supplied LNG in a cryogenic valve has been studied. The governing equations are discredited and solved numerically by the finite-volume method and finite-element method. In this study, we designed the high pressure cryogenic ball valve that accomplishes zero leakage by elastic seal at normal temperature and metal seal at high temperature.
Large valves for steam turbines of fossil power plants are exposed to a severe mechanical and thermal loading resulting from steam with high pressure and high temperature. Valve casings are designed to withstand such a loading. During the operation of a plant, temperatures at inner and outer surface of the casings are measured and steam flow is controlled so that the measured difference is lower than the maximum allowable value determined in the design stage. In this paper, a method is presented to calculate the maximum allowable temperature difference at the inner and outer surface of valve casings for steam turbines of fossil power plants. The finite element method is used to analyze distribution of temperature and stresses of a casing under the operating condition. Low cycle fatigue and creep rupture are taken into consideration to determine the maximum allowable temperature difference. The method can be usefully applied in the design stage of the large valves for the steam turbines, contributing to safe and reliable operation of the fossil power plants.
