  • In order to prevent the failures of underground distribution power cables we need to measure insulation condition in the field. Until now we used DC high voltage as a power source for the cable diagnosis but it was not proper method to the XLPE insulation cables because DC high voltage can affect sound insulation and can't diagnose exactly insulation degradation. For these reasons we imported isothermal relaxation current measurement system called by KDA-1 from germany but it's reliability did not proved in our URD cables. DC voltage decay measurement system was developed by domestic company but they don't have field experience. In this paper we tried to prove reliability of these two systems in the field. Through the field diagnosis and Ac breakdown test the two systems showed similar results.

  • In this paper, describes the fabrication and dielectric insulation characteristics experimental results of the model cable for the 22.9kV class HTS power cable. The model cable were tested with partial discharge(PD), AC and impulse withstand voltage in liquid nitrogen($LN_2$) and liquid nitrogen pressure. In these test results, PD inception stress and AC, impulse breakdown strength increase as the pressure of the liquid nitrogen increases.

  • The high temperature superconducting(HTS) power cable, as a key component of the next generation power transmission system, operates cost-effectively because of much less transmission loss. Currently, a world-wide research has been undertaken actively. In this research, we designed insulation thickness and investigated thickness effect of laminated polypropylene paper(LPP) which is insulation material of HTS cable in case of AC and impulse breakdown.

  • This paper described partial discharge(PD) patterns depending on types of insulation defects in CNCO-W cable(Concentric Neutral Closs-linked Polyethylene Insulated Polyolefin-Water Proof Sheathed Power Cable). The PD measurement system consists of a coupling network, a detection impedance, and a low noise amplifier. A 16 bit, 250 MS/s data acquisition system was used to analyze PD patterns. To simulate insulation defects in a power cable, a needle with the curvature radius of $10{\mu}m$ was inserted into the insulation part. We measured phase ($\Phi$), magnitude (q), and counts (n) of PD pulse for the defects, and classified PD patterns using the PRPD (phase Resolved Partial Discharge) method. From the analysis of acquired PD signals, we could find that a unique PD pattern is formed according to the types of defect.

  • The aim of this study is to find out the effects of thermal aging condition on dielectric strength and degree of crtstallinity of XLPE insulation. Thermal properties of XLPE insulation were investigated by DSC(differential scanning calorimetry) and dielectric strength were analyzed using AC BDV tester. Aging of XLPE samples were conducted through different four conditions. The degree of crtstallinity and AC BDV were changed by thermal history. From these results, it can be suggested that DSC and AC BDV test are suitable for diagnostic method of extra high voltage XLPE cable.

  • Chemical structure and electrical properties such as water treeing and space charge accumulation of various raw materials(XLPE) used for power cable insulation were investigated. It was found that chemical structure was changed after crosslinking reaction and every materials have different amounts of DCP and antioxidant. Electrical properties were also changed after extraction using $CHCl_3$ and xylene. Water tree length was smaller with additives such as DCP and antioxidant and bigger with low molecular weight components of polyethylene than that of extracted samples. Heterocharge was changed into homocharge after extraction. This shows that additives and low molecular weight components of polyethylene cause the heterocharge.

  • Diagnosis of cable insulation degradation has important meaning from a viewpoint of reliability enhancement of CV cable systems. So, we diagnosed 3.3kV & 6.6kV CV distribution cable on live-line which is judged to a most poor installation condition because they have been used in water condition after installation at the Yeochon chemical complex. The paper describes the analysis of the measured data, the problems at diagnosis, and the items which are considered at the development of diagnosis technology and equipment hearafter.

  • Recently, on power system, it is used to high voltage of transmission and distribution due to safe power supply and have high quality and insulation in order to satisfy excellent insulator. Thus, according to underground of high voltage cable, is occurred break down by ground short. Therefore, it is used to high quality XLPE power cable to interrupt instantaneous voltage drop. If it appear inner defect for cable whose have high quality and insulation, it is reduced rapidly due to concentration of electrical field. After assemble to manufacture, in order to inspect cable condition, it is decided much inspection standard. In this paper, In inner defect of assembling cable at manufacture, for measure the variation of insulation condition by void. it tested the variation of insulating characteristics, using $\phi$-q-n distribution variation in partial discharge experiment.

  • In this study, the insulation selected in degra-dated-power cable has been observed and aging process about the insulation has been investigated. Most Insulation aging process initiates in the interface of semiconducting layer and the type of the process is the fractal form that was observed between the the semiconducting layer and insulation layer. It is possible to estimate degree of the degration of cable with breakdown test and obtained data have been used to get parameters in order to use Weibull distribution. With this method it is considered to be possible to estimate situation of degration and life prediction.

  • In this work, we have conducted insulation aging assessment and maintenance for submarine medium voltage power cable systems to discriminate and maintain bad cables economically. We have found that aging status of submarine cable systems are very poor and in progress. We have found that insulation status were improved with the replacement of cable terminations. We have confirmed with the electrical and structural analysis of terminations, that the poor aging status of cables are mainly caused not by the cable insulations but by the aging of cable terminations. From the above results, we have also confirmed that the domestic diagnostic system is successful and convenient for the discrimination and maintenance of the damaged cables economically.
