Pure Ti as well as Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibit excellent properties for dental implant applications. However, for a better biocompatibility it seems important to avoid in the composition the presence of V due to the toxic effects of V ion release. Thus Al and V free and composed of non-toxic element such as Nb, Zr alloys as biomaterials have been developed. Especially, Zr contains to same family in periodic table as Ti. The addition of Zr to Ti alloy has an excellent mechanical properties, good corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. In this study, the electrochemical characteristics of Ti-Zr alloys for biomaterials have been investigated using by electrochemical methods. Methods: Ti-Zr(10, 20, 30 and 40 wt%) alloys were prepared by arc melting and homogenized for 24 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. Phase constitutions and microstructure of the specimens were characterized by XRD, OM and SEM. The corrosion properties of the specimens were examined through potentiodynamic test (potential range of -1500 ~ 2000 mV), potentiostatic test (const. potential of 300 mV) in artificial saliva solution by potentiostat (EG&G Co, PARSTAT 2273. USA).
The surface microstructural changes, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of Ti-Pd alloys for dental biomaterials have been investigated. Ti, Ti-Pd alloys were melted in arc furnace and the corrosion resistance of Ti-Pd alloys was evaluated by anodic polarization test. The surface microstructural changes and mechanical properties of Ti-Pd alloys were analysed by scanning electron microscope and Vickers micro-hardness tester. The vickers hardnees of pure Ti improved by addition of Pd but Ti-25Pd alloy showed decreasing compared with Ti-15Pd. And anodic polarization and potentiostatic test were conducted in 5% HCl to quantify the resistance to corrosion with the addition of Pd, There was no significant difference in corrosion resistance between pure Ti, Ti-5Pd and Ti-15Pd alloy. However, Ti-25Pd alloy showed decreasing compared with pure Ti in corrosion resistance. From these results, it was concluded that newly formulated Ti-15Pd experimental alloy have adequate hardness and high corrosion resistance, and this alloy is promising candidate for a successful dental casting alloy.

In this study, the cavitation test and electrochemical experiments were conducted for ALBC3(Cu-Al) alloy that has an excellent corrosion resistance and cavitation characteristic in sea water. Based on the ASTMG32 regulation, the cavitation test was performed with the cavitation and cavitation erosion tester using piezoelectric effect. The electrochemical characteristics are evaluated with potentiostatic experiments in activation polarization potential range. As a result, cavitation damage is increased proportionally to temperature and time at $30{\mu}m$ amplitude. It is appeared that acceleration period in weight loss presented over 6 hours under the cavitation environment in sea water. In addition, corrosion damages were observed at the potential range of -3.2~-1.4 V as the result of potensiostatic experiments during 12 hours in activation polarization potential range.

An electroplating on the lead frame fabricated from domestic copper plate was studied experimentally. In this study, nickel was plated on the thin copper lead frame and silver layer was coated on the nickel film in the cyanide electrolyte. The effect of process variables such as current density, plating time, coating thickness and flow rate of electrolytic solution on the properties of coating was investigated. Some samples on each step were fabricated during electroplating. The results obtained from polarization measurement, observation of SEM photograph, adhesion test of coating and microhardness test are as follows. On silver plating, polarization resistance of potentiostatic cathodic polarization curve is reduced as the flow rate of Ag electrolytic solution increases. And above resistance is also reduced when the minor chemicals of sodium cyanide and sodium carbonate are added in potassium silver cyanide bath. The reduced polarization resistance makes silver deposition on the cathode easy. An increase in the current density and the coating thickness causes the particle size of deposit to coarsen, and consequently the Knoop microhardness of the coating decreases. On selective plating an increase in the flow rate of plating solution lead to do high speed plating with high current density. In this case, the surface morphology of deposit is of fine microstructure with high Knoop hardness. An increasing trend of the adhesion of coating was shown with increasing the current density and flow rate of electrolytic solution.
The aim of this study was to propose a multiple linear regression (MLR) equation to predict ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 316L stainless steel with unspecified pit corrosion. Tensile specimens with pit corrosion were prepared using a potentiostatic acceleration test method. Pit corrosion was characterized by measuring ten factors using a confocal laser microscope. Data were collected from 22 tensile tests. At 85% confidence level, total pit volume, maximum pit depth, mean ratio of surface area, and mean area were significant factors showing linear relationships with UTS. The MLR equation using these three significant factors at a 85% confidence level showed considerable prediction performance for UTS. Determination coefficient (R2) was 0.903 with training and test data sets. The yield strength ratio of 316L stainless steel was found to be around 0.85. All specimens with a pit corrosion presented a yield ratio of approximately 0.85 with R2 of 0.998. Therefore, pit corrosion did not affect the yield ratio.
In this study, effects of solidification modes (primary $\delta$-ferrite, primary ${\gamma}$-austenite) on the pit initiation and propagation in the 304L and 316L austenitic stainless steel weld metals were investigated. The solidification mode of weld metal was controlled by the addition of nitrogen to Ar shielding gas. Through the electrochemical experiments (potentiodynamic anodic polarization and potentiostatic time-current transient test) and metallographic examination (microstructure and elemental distribution), the following results were obtained. The more the volume content of nitrogen in the shielding gas were, the lower critical current density for passivity was observed. In comparison with weldments solidified through the primary $\delta$-ferrite solidification mode and the primary ${\gamma}$-solidification mode, the former showed higher critical pitting potential and a longer incubation time for stable pit initiation than the latter. However, in the pit propagation stage the former exhibited a faster dissolution rate than the latter. These results were believed to ee related to the distribution of alloying elements such as Cr, Mo, Ni and S.

The purposed of this work was to determine nanotube shape variation on the Ti-xNb alloys with alloying elements and applied potentials. Samples were prepared by arc melting, followed by followed by homogenization for 12 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. This study was evaluated the phase and microstructure of Ti-xNb alloys using an X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical microscopy (OM). The morphology of the samples was investigated with a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The nanotube on the alloy surface was formed in 1 M $H_3PO_4$ with small additions of NaF 0.8 wt.%. All anodization treatments were carried out using a scanning potentiostat (Model 362, EG&G, USA) at constant voltage 30 V for 120 min, respectively. The morphology of the samples was investigated with a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Surface characteristics of nanotbue formed on Ti-xNb alloys was investigated by potentiodynamic test and potentiostatic in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. It was observed that the changed ${\alpha}$ phase to ${\beta}$ phase with Nb content.
Chromium nitride (CrN) samples with two different layer structures (multilayer and single layer) were coated on bipolar plates of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) using the reactive sputtering method. The effects with respect to layer structure on corrosion resistance and overall cell performance were investigated. A continuous and thin chromium nitride layer ($Cr_{0.48}\;N_{0.52}$) was formed on the surface of the SUS 316L when the nitrogen flow rate was 10 sccm. The electrochemical stability of the coated layers was examined using the potentiodynamic and potentiostatic methods in the simulated corrosive circumstances of the PEMFC under $80^{\circ}C$. Interfacial contact resistance (ICR) between the CrN coated sample and the gas diffusion layer was measured by using Wang's method. A single cell performance test was also conducted. The test results showed that CrN coated SUS316L with multilayer structure had excellent corrosion resistance compared to single layer structures and single cell performance results with $25\;cm^2$ in effective area also showed the same tendency. The difference of the electrochemical properties between the single and multilayer samples was attributed to the Cr interlayer layer, which improved the corrosion resistance. Because the coating layer was damaged by pinholes, the Cr layer prevented the penetration of corrosive media into the substrate. Therefore, the CrN with a multilayer structure is an effective coating method to increase the corrosion resistance and to decrease the ICR for metallic bipolar plates in PEMFC.
A marine structural material was well known to have high tensile strength, good weldability and proper corrosion resistance. Cu-containing high strength low alloy(HSLA) steel was recently developed for their purposes mentioned above. And the steel is free about preheating for welding, therefore it is reported that shipbuilding cost by using it can be saved more or less. However the marine structural materials like Cu-containing HSLA steel are being generally adopted with cathodic protection method in severe corrosive environment like natural sea water but the high strength steel may give rise to Hydrogen Embrittlement due to over protection at high cathodic current density for cathodic protection. In this study Cu-containing HSLA steel using well for marine atructure was investigated about the susceptibility of Hydrogen Embrittlement as functions of tensile strength, strain ratio, fracture time, and fracture mode, etc. and an optimum cathodic protection potential by slow strain rate test(SSRT) method as well as corrosion properties in natural sea water. And its corrosion resistance was superior to SS400 steel, but Hydrogen Embrittlement susceptibility of Cu-containing HSLA steel was higer than that of SS400 steel. However Hydrogen Embrittlement of its steel by SSRT method was showed with pheonomena such as decreasing of fracture time, strain ratio and fracture mode of QC(quasi-cleavage). Eventually it is suggested that an optimum cathodic protection potential not presenting Hydrogen Embrittlement of Cu-containing of HSLA steel by SSRT method was from-770mv(SCE) to - 900mV(SCE)under natural sea water.
To study the effects of fabrication methods on the performance and durability of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) were fabricated using a Dr blade method, a spray method, screen print method and screen print + spray method. The performance of single cells assembled with the prepared MEAs were initially measured and compared. Electrode accelerated stress testing (AST) involving a potentiostatic step-wave with 10 s at 0.6 V followed by 30 s at 0.9 V was applied to test durability of MEAs. Before and after 6,000cycles of the AST, I-V curves, impedance spectra, cyclic voltammograms, linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were measured. Under the operating conditions, the Dr Blde MEA exhibited the highest initial performance. After electrode accelerated stress testing, screen print + spray MEA showed lowest degradation rate.
