  • Branched broomrape (Orobanche ramosa) is a holo-parasitic flowering plant that attaches to the root of its host, green plant, by means of a specialized structure known as haustorium. Following successful contact and penetration on susceptible plant root, complex tissue of Orobanche cells is formed which is known as the tubercle. Newly formed tubercles contain high activity ofindole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA), as an inhibitor of IAA polar transport, was utilized to investigate the supply and requirement of auxin to the developing O. ramosa on tomato plant. There was no significant reduction in the incidence of O. ramosa per pot of different TIBA treatments. However, infection severity in terms of the number of O. ramosa shoots that emerged per plant and number of attachments per plant root system were significantly reduced by 60 % and 45 % on TIBA treated plants, respectively. Histo-logical studies revealed conspicuous delay in the initiation of xylem vessel differentiation inside tubercles of the TIBA treated tomato plants. Also, differentiated vessels showed thinner secondary wall deposition, and improper alignment within bundles inside those tubercles. They were wider and shorter in diameter in comparison to those of untreated plants. These findings were attri-buted to the short supply of IAA required for normal development, and to the xylem vessel differentiation of O. ramosa tubercles on infected tomato. Hence, this parasitic flowering plant seems to depend upon its host in its requirements for IAA, in a source to sink relation-ship.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ethephon, paclobutrazol, and uniconazole on the flowering of potted Yarrow (Archillea millefolium). Each plant growth regulator was sprayed two times before stem elongation period of yarrow. The tallest was 45.7 cm at $1000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ ethephon and the shortest was 11.1 cm at 20 uniconazole. Uniconazole delayed flowering and decreased the number of flowers. Both uniconazole at 20 ppm and paclobutrazol at 200 ppm decreased the number of florets to 90.0% and 43.6% of control, respectively. In ethephon, number of florets was increased 34.1% compared with control. In addition, ethephon and paclobutrazol increased the number of mean auxillaly flowers to 28.6% and 23.5% of control, respectively. On the other hand, uniconazole decrease the number of auxillary flowers to 55.3%. Thus, paclobutrazol was recommended as a suitable plant growth regulator for yarrow pot plant production.

  • To compare the effect of dikegulac (sodium 2,3 : 4, 6-di-O-isopropylidene-2-keto-L-gulonate) and ancymidol (${\alpha}$-cyclopropyl-${\alpha}$-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-pyrimidinemethanol) on the growth and flowering responses of Salvia splendens cv. Bonfire, foliar spray of dikegulac at rates of 0.06 and 0.12% and ancymidol at rates of 50 and 100 ppm, and soil drench of ancymidol at rates of 0.1 and 0.5 mg/pot were treated. Dikegulac reduced the plant height and induced the lateral shoot development by disrupting apical dominance, and thus increased the number of inflorescences and retarded flowering date. Dikegulac treatment greatly increased chlorophyll content of leaf, especially chlorophyll a. Ancymidol reduced the plant height without disrupting apical dominance and retarding flower ing date, but did not increase inflorescence number except soil drench at rate of 0.1 mg/pct. Ancymidol treatment significantly increased chlorophyll content of leaf, especially chlorophyll a. Dikegulac can be effectively used as a pinching agent and branching agent for salvia.

  • The Korean mint (Agastache rugosa Kuntze) is used as a leaf vegetable. Therefore, it is important to improve the quality and quantity of leaves by maintaining vegetative growth. When the development of a plant is switched from vegetative to reproductive growth, leaf development may be lowered, leading to a decrease in marketability. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of the photoperiod on the flowering characteristics and inflorescence development of the Korean mint to select an appropriate photoperiod for leaf production. The seeds were sown in 105-cell trays on 29 November 2021, and planted in each pot on 27 December 2021, when four main leaves appeared. After planting, the light/dark period was adjusted to 10/14hrs, 12/12hrs, 14/10hrs, 16/8hrs. After 19 days of planting, the first flowering occurred in 10/14hrs, which had a short photoperiod, and the 12/12hrs had 20 days for flowering, and other treatments had 21 days. In addition, it was confirmed that the Korean mint has the characteristics of facultative quantitative short-day plant, through the increase in the development of inflorescences as the light period is shorter than the dark period. As for the growth of Korean mint, the longer the photoperiod, the higher values were shown with leaf length, number of leaves, fresh weight, dry weight, and leaf area of the shoot. Therefore, it is considered that 14 h or more light period is suitable for increasing the productivity of Korean mint as a leafy vegetable.

  • Effects of cutting time of double flowered Hydragea serrata for. acuminata native to Korea on flowering and growth of following year were investigated in order to develop as a pot plant. Cuttings were carried out every 10th day from April to September in 2008. The cuttings were directly placed in 15 cm diameter pots. Longest plant was obtained from May cuttings and their average heights were 31.7 cm, and followed by April and July cuttings. Plant heights of August and September cuttings were 23.6 cm and 22.0 cm, respectively. In contrast, growth and height of June cutting were abnormally small. Leaf length, leaf width and petiole length of August and September cutting were reduced, but numbers of leaves were not changed. Average flower cluster numbers of May cuttings were 4 flower clusters, and July, August and September cuttings were 3 clusters while only 1 flower cluster per a plant was obtained during June. Biggest diameter of flower crown was observed from May cuttings and the size was 10.3 cm diameter; however, smaller flower crown size was observed after July cuttings. The best overall flower appearance was observed from May cuttings, and the worst was June cuttings. Even though plant height of August and September cuttings were reduced, flowering aspect and ornamental value were normal, but blooming times were retarded according to late cutting time.
