An Analysis of Hirata Oriza's Plays based on Lyotard's Postmodern Scientific View (리오타르 포스트모던 과학관에 따른 히라타 오리자의 희곡 분석)

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze Hirata Oriza's three plays, "Scientific Minds," "Monkeys on the Northern Limit Line" and "Balkan Zoo" with Lyotard's postmodern scientific view. Liotar, who claims that science and narratives follow the rules of their own pragmatic use, talks about the incommensurable parallelism between the two. Hirata Oriza points out that humans rely on narratives in the postmodern world. This paper analyzes Hirata Oriza's plays in three aspects. First, in the postmodern world where the master narrative has disappeared, it identifies the point where the boundaries that define the identity of human beings under the lost and developing science technology are fading. Second, we look at the pattern in which the parallelism between scientific knowledge and narrative knowledge is constantly diluted due to the characteristics of humans who understand the world by leaning on narrative. Finally, the aspects of small narratives are idetified, raised by individuals to comfort themselves toward a world where the master narrative disappears and is justified only by maximizing performance.

  • This study explored the theoretical context of postmodern aesthetics in experiencing art/craft/handmade/studio furniture for 'wood culture experience class' or 'wood love experience class', which has been recently carried out by the Korea Forest Service and is apt to focus on making simple wood work just involved in the practical part. Qualitative conceptual analysis as the principal methodology was used to achieve the theoretical context in the experience programs. I developed the lesson for an aesthetics of art and everyday life with wood furniture which expresses the metaphorical aesthetics appeared as New Design furniture in postmodernism. As statement of objective in the lesson, I explored that students in elementary schools personally understand and define the postmodern aesthetics of New Design furniture as metaphor. As a result, the students will be able to define and identify New Design furniture as metaphor in their lives.

  • This study has examined, first of all, one of unique characteristics of picturebook, so-called dual audience. To be more exact, this paper aimed at exploring the flexibility of picturebooks that allows both of children and adult reader to enjoy them. For this, we analysed Piggybook by Anthony Browne that so far has been read as a traditional picturebook with a single distinctive narrative rather than as a postmodern picturebook with multiple narratives, centering on paradox and irony. The results of this study were as fallows: Piggybook has the potential of multiple readings and meanings for a variety of audiences. Above all, this picturebook raises not only the question about the gender roles but also the one about representation of reality through the language.

Analysis of Postmodern Characteristics of Blade Runner based on Simulacrum (시뮬라크럼에 의한 블레이드 러너의 포스트 모더니즘 특성분석)

  • This study set out to figure out the tendencies of the staff members participating in the space design of Blade Runner and compare and analyze its set and location characteristics with its narrative based on Gilles Deleuze' Simulacrum, one of the basic theories of Post modernism, thus identifying the characteristics of postmodern space inherent in it. The findings were as follows: first, the spaces in a Late modernism tendency in Blade Runner seem to have been created by the cinematic imagination of Syd Mead and Douglas Trumbull rather than being influenced by the old Late modernism architecture. Second, the postmodern spaces of the movie were designed to depict a more realistic future by reinforcing the old ornamental elements or adding the mechanical aesthetics of Late modernism based on a prediction of future cities. Third, the characters representing Late modernism and Post modernism in the narrative of the movie embrace the tendencies of the parties objected by Model and Simulacrum in the scenes where they deny the tendencies of the spaces to which they belong, thus exhibiting a dual trend. Fourth, the dual narrative of Model and Simulacrum holds duality even in the space and architecture of the movie, which is the reason why the movie chose postmodern spaces reflecting historical contexts instead of inner spaces in the tendency of minimalism, which was in vogue when SF movies were made those days. Finally, the spaces of the movie can be categorized according to the Late modernism and Post modernism tendencies from the perspective of the 1980s and be understood to show the architecture and space of future Post modernism feasible through the layering of historicity, locality, and mechanical aesthetics from ancient Maya to a future city in Los Angeles, the background of the movie, from the perspective of 2019.

  • This study explored interpretation of the symbolical and metaphorical aesthetics in experiencing art/craft/handmade/studio furniture theoretically for 'wood culture experience class' or 'wood love experience class' by the Korea Forest Service because the class tends to focus on making simple wood works involved just in the practical part. As statement of objective in the second lesson, I explored that students in elementary schools personally transform and interpret the postmodern aesthetics of New Design furniture metaphorically with the meanings of symbol. As a result, the students will be able to write about the aesthetics of New Design furniture as metaphor in interpretation transformed by his/her perspective of a piece of selected New Design furniture.

U.S. Fashion Trends in the 1980s: Postmodern and Modern Styles of Dressing of Female College Students

  • The purposes of this study were to document the fashions adopted by young women in the United States in the 1980s and to explore if and how the dynamic shifts toward postmodernist values influenced those fashion trends. Fifteen U.S. women who were college students in the 1980s were interviewed for the study. In analysis of the data, we focused on social changes during the 1980s and the cultural impact of postmodernism vs. modernism as influential factors. Both postmodern and feminist ideas challenged the mainstream cultural framework of capitalism. U.S. women's styles and behaviors concerning dress reflected characteristics of postmodern consumption patterns, which include nostalgia, ethnic dress, androgyny, eclectic and novel clothing combinations, surprising or humorous appearance, and nonconformity. Despite the critique of conformity and conservatism in dress that had emerged in the 1960s and remained in at least minority or subversive trends, the importance of brand names and designer labels increased in mainstream fashion. This study helps us better understand the dynamics of fashion as it reflects societal and value changes in a transitional time in history.

  • The value orientations and life styles which are characterized by the postmodern societies have been expanding in korean society. This paper concerns with the postmodernism for in fashion design : at first the complex relationships between the logic of post-industrial society and the culture dynamics of postmodernism will be explained. Then the characteristics of postmodernism in the comparision with the Bauhaus, also "modernism" in design areas will be critically identified, and significant examples which I select in order to criticize the basic elements or orientations of postmodern design will be analized in details.I will make a new perspective which is beyond Bauhaus and postmodernism ; namly 'open dialogism design.'. But in the boundary of its introduction.

  • The goal of this research is contemplation on whether postmodern design concepts such as parody, simulation, appropriation, pastiche apply to the character design in games, within bounds of postmodernism.   • Near / Miss, Charles Bernstein's poetry collection, is replete with poems of distinctive styles and pluralistic forms in his idiosyncratic and artistic cosmos. With poetic antics, queerness, sarcasm, irony, and humor, the book showcases the motif of loss, chaos and trauma in postmodern America and the world. The multiplicity and multi-dimensional $M{\ddot{o}}bius$ effect in Near / Miss echo earlier Bernstein's poems, as well as poems by ancient and contemporary poets, with visual artists and musicians, and rabbis and Jewish philosophers. I argue that Near / Miss offers an apotheosis of echopoetics, which has been launched in his previous book Pitch of Poetry. Poems in the book reveal the dark and thick "pitch," namely the queer, the uncanny, the invisible, the disabled, the dispossessed, and the silenced poetic Other and make it explicit. The estrangement and alienation of $clich{\acute{e}}$ through diverse malaprops, mondegreens, non-sequiturs and fragmentations in Near / Miss aim at deconstructing the fixation of language so as to display the poetic Other. The motif of "nothingness" in echopoetics significantly multiplies its meanings. Nothingness mainly refers to the loss of origin, the defiance of tyranny, and the sublimity of the universe and the poetic Other. Melding his personal loss and misfortune, the current political discontent and the postmodern chaos in America and the world, nothingness in echopoetics resonates with American literary tradition and Zen with a healing and transforming power.

Postmodern Subject's Anxiety and Obsessive Repetition in Paul Auster's Leviathan (탈근대 주체의 불안과 강박적 반복: 폴 오스터의 『리바이어던』 읽기)

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine Paul Auster's Leviathan according to Slavoj Žižek's theory. Analyzing the characters in Leviathan, this paper chiefly discusses the postmodern subject's anxiety and obsessive repetition that the lack of the big Other led to. Section II explains the disintegration of the big Other and the subject's anxiety and obsessive repetition by the interpretation of the characters: Peter Aaron, Maria Turner, and Benjamin Sachs. Aaron wants to write on Sachs's life to overcome his uneasy subject's condition, and to establish the consistent and whole world. But his writing fails to meet his desire, owing to uncertainty of his understanding, and the incompleteness of his writing. In case of Maria, her uneasy subject's condition led to her obsessively repetitive picture-shooting herself and others, which proved to be a meaningless struggle for filling the void of the big Other and herself. Although Sachs already knows the lack and inconsistency of the big Other, he also repetitively tries to establish the consistent and whole Other. In Section III, this paper examines Sachs's terror as he struggles for the preservation of the big Other. His extreme striving also fails to reestablish the big Other as it loses its symbolic effectiveness in the postmodern era because he does not grasp the big Other as an empty Symbolic order, and rejects the premise of the big Other itself.
