  • Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate the tolerance of 42 pepper cultivars to postemergence applications of bentazon [3-(1-methylethyl)-(1H)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide]. Cultivars, Jopoong, Singsing House, Sweet Green, Kwangbok, and Ilcheon showed relatively tolerant response to bentazon, while cultivars, Dahhong, Early Glory, Korea, Cheongyang, Nostalgia, and Daejanggyeong were susceptible ones to it. At rates over 2.40 kg ai/ha, the tolerant cultivars appeared to be clearly or more tolerant than the susceptible cultivars. For the determination of growth inhibition by bentazon, the concentration required to reduce growth by 50% (GR_(50)) was 2.00 to 2.40 kg ai/ha for susceptible cultivars, and 10.00 to 12.00 kg ai/ha for tolerant cultivars. Moreover, the herbicide rate required to inhibit growth by 50% $(I_{50})$ was 2.40 kg ai/ha for susceptible cultivars and 9.60 kg ai/ha for tolerant cultivars, respectively. On the $I_{50}$ and $GR_{50}$ estimates of growth, the tolerant cultivars were 5- to 6-fold more tolerant to bentazon than susceptible ones.

  • Field and greenhouse trials were conducted to evaluate application variables including spray volume, surfactant, and simulated rain affecting phytotoxicity of glyphosate for enhancing efficacy of postemergence herbicides. Glyphosate phytotoxicity was increased by addition of surfactants, L-77 and Triton CS-7 to glyphosate solution in Artmesia princeps and Equisetum arvense and addition of Triton CS-7 to glyphosate solution enhanced control of Trifoliurn repens. Simulated rain within 4 or 8 hours after glyphosate application reduced glyphosate phytotoxicity. However, addition of L-77 and Triton CS-7 to glyphosate solution increased glyphosate phytotoxicity reduced by simulated rain in Artmesia princeps and Trifolium repens.

  • 1. Purpose of this experiment is to investigate the influence of wheat scab fungus(Gibberella zeae) remaining in soil or residues of infected plants to the growth of the seedlings of 14 different crops. 2. Susceptibility of these crops to the infection by G. zeae was investigated by planting these crops both to the artificially inoculated soils and naturally infected soils where both serious and light wheat scab epidemic have occurred previously. 3. In artifical inoculation tests, bailey, wheat, rye, soybean, rice, buckwheat, corn, cotton and greenbean has shown susceptible reaction, while indianbean, sesame, sorghum, chinese cabbage and radish has shown resistant reaction. 4. In artificial inoculation tests, there was significant difference in the germination ratio of the susceptible crops between the plants planted in inoculated soils and uninoculated soils with the exception of rice, com and cotton. Preemergence seedling blight was confined only to barley and corn, whereas postemergence seedling blight was confined to rye, wheat, rice buckwheat, barley and corn. la most of the susceptible crops secondary roots were almost rotted and the primary roots were either partially rotted or discolorated in inoculated soil. There was significant difference in the stem length of the plants grown in inoculated soils and uninoculated soils in susceptible crops. 5. No infection by G. zeae was observed when wheat, barley and rye plants were sown to the soils where both serious and light wheat scab epidemic occurred naturally.

  • Nine combined dosal levels of Paraquat and Oxyfluorfen were compared on pear orchard to control Digitaria adscendens Henr, and others, namely Commelina communis L., Erigeron annuus L., Echinochloa crusgalli P. Beauv var. oryzicola Ohwi, etc.. By treating as an early-postemergence, the mixtures showed higher control effects than 85% of the whole weeds, but the control effects in the mono-treatments of respective herbicide were only 20% or so. On the other hand, as a late-postemergence, the control rates were fluctuated from 31% to 94%. However, there was no significant difference in Spearman's rank correlation coefficients between both efficacies. Thus indicate that the action style of synergistic effect was not influenced by the application time, and the levels of mixtured dosages should be adjusted by the application times and interfering conditions.

  • Effect of a new postemergence herbicide carfentrazone-ethyl on controlling weeds in pear orchards was examined and compared with that of glyphosate and glufosinate. Herbicides tested were applied in mid June when weeds had reached at an average height of 15 to 20cm. The experimented orchards were infested mainly by dicots of Artemisia princeps, Chenopodium album, Polygonum hydropiper, Erigeron canadensis, Commelina cummunis, Calystegia japonica, and Amaranthus ascenders, and monocots of Echinochlor crus-galli, Digitaria sangunalis, Setaria viridis, and several sedges, Carfentrazone-ethyl alone effectively controlled dicot weeds in the orchards, but not monocot weeds. Especially, sedges were not adequately controlled by carfentrazone-ethyl alone at any application rates examined. Glyphosate or glufosinate was more effective to control monocot weeds than carfentrazone-ethyl, whereas carfentrazone-ethyl exhibited higher effect on dicot weeds than glyphosate or glufosinate. Carfentrazone-ethyl mixed with glyphosate of the half recommended rate exhibited a higher degree of weed control, especially of E. crus-galli, as compared to the herbicide mixture of carfentrazone-ethyl with glufosinate of the half recommended rate. However, no phytotocixity of the herbicides to pear trees was observed. Our results demonstrate that catfentrazone-ethyl is useful to reduce the application rates and to accelerate the weed controlling effect of glyphosate or glufosinate. Thus, carfentrazone-ethyl in combination with glyphosate or glufosinate can successfully be used to control the most important weeds in orchards.

  • Incorporating herbicides application into a fertilization program has several benefits including saving time and reducing traffics on the lawn. Premixed products of fertilizers and herbicides are commonly known as Weed & Feed in the lawn-care industry. To compare Weed & Feed with separate applications of fertilizers and herbicides on a Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) lawn, a Weed & Feed 28-3-3, containing 0.64% 2,4-D, 0.31% MCPP, and 0.03% dicamba of active ingredients, was used in this study. The first application was in May, with the second in June or Sept. Herbicides in forms of 2,4-D (LV-4, 4EC), MCPP (4EC), and dicamba (Clarity, 4EC) were applied at rates equal to the amounts in Weed & Feed or at half of the rates. The dominant weed in both locations was common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber.) in 2005 and 2004. A secondary weed was Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.) in 2004 and broadleaf plantain (Plantago major L.) in 2005. When applied in May and June, fertilizer plus full rate of herbicides treatment achieved 112.3 and 83.7 days of acceptable turf quality in 2004 and 2005, respectively. During the same period, Weed & Feed resulted in 58.7 and 24.3 days of acceptable turf quality, respectively. Our study showed that Weed & Feed was generally as effective in weed control as the same amount of fertilizer plus half rates of herbicides sprayed although results may vary due to the timing of application. Fertilizer plus full rates of herbicides provided the same or better results of weed control than Weed & Feed.

  • For weeding on the after-barley cropping soybean, the tank-mix use of postemergence herbicides acifluorfen and haloxyfop-methyl was tested. Acifluorfen has shown the transient leaf-burn on the newly formed soybean leaves, but no growth inhibitions. Under the treatment of acifluorfen only, grassy weeds occurred successively and explosively. However, under the combinated spraying of both herbicides, the grassy weeds could be controlled in a slight antagonistic, the broadleaved weeds in additive, and the total weed species including sedges in synergic tendencies, respectively. Also, to achieve the full-season weeding efficacies for the prominent crop yields, both herbicides are suggested to be mixed with more dosages than 0.245 kg ai/ha of acifluorfen and 0.15 kg ae/ha of haloxyfop-methyl, respectively.

  • To evaluate the compatibility in systemic use of 4 kinds of herbicides on both weeds and soybeans, trials were conducted at Coll. Exp. Farm/Jonnam Nat'l. Univ., 1983. Among the experimented 4 herbicides, alachlor or metribuzin were applied at pre-emergence, and followed by postemergence spraying of acifluorfen or bentazon, respectively. All herbicides were applicated at rates of 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 kg active ingredients per ha. Under the conditions which Echinochloa crusgalli and Digitaria adscendense were dominating, most comprehensive compatibility was found from each rates 0.5 - 0.75 kg/ha at 60 days after crop seeding date. However, slight transient leaf burn was evident at the plots of metribuzin and/or acifluorfen applicated. The positive tendency of herbicide interactions in weeding efficacy was observed from the system in alachlor sequence. However, the results in crop growth and yields at hervest indicate the necessity of higher rates of each herbicides upto 0.75 kg/ha for the consistence weeding efficacies. And more excellent weeding results (crop growth and yields) on crop plants were provided from the plots which applicated by residual type herbicide, namely acifluorfen than bentzaon.
