  • Friction welding is a common practice to join axially symmetrical parts for automobile industry applications. The shaft for automobile reverse idle gear is generally produced by forging steel, SF 45. This method is not so good because of high cost of material and production. In this study, in order to investigate the possibility of application of SM 45C to SF 45 dissimilar friction welding, the dissimilar friction welded joints were performed using 20 mm diameter solid bar in forging steel(SF 45) to carbon steel(SM 45C). The optimal friction welding parameters were selected to ensure reliable quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile test, micro-Virkers hardness surveys of the bond of area and optical microstructure investigations for welded joint parts. Finally, post weld heat treatment(PWHT) of the high-frequency induction hardening was performed for the friction welded specimens under the optimal welding conditions. And then, the mechanical properties were compared for as-welded and PWHT in SM 45C to SF 45.

  • SA508 Gr.4N Ni-Cr-Mo low alloy steel, in which Ni and Cr contents are higher than in commercial SA508 Gr.3 Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steels, may be a candidate reactor pressure vessel (RPV) material with higher strength and toughness from its tempered martensitic microstructure. The inner surface of the RPV is weld-cladded with stainless steels to prevent corrosion. The goal of this study is to evaluate the microstructural properties of the clad interface between Ni-Cr-Mo low alloy steel and stainless weldment, and the effects of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on the properties. The properties of the clad interface were compared with those of commercial Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel. Multi-layer welding of model alloys with ER308L and ER309L stainless steel by the SAW method was performed, and then PWHT was conducted at $610^{\circ}C$ for 30 h. The microstructural changes of the clad interface were analyzed using OM, SEM and TEM, and micro-Vickers hardness tests were performed. Before PWHT, the heat affected zone (HAZ) showed higher hardness than base and weld metals due to formation of martensite after welding in both steels. In addition, the hardness of the HAZ in Ni-Cr-Mo low alloy steel was higher than that in Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel due to a comparatively high martensite fraction. The hardness of the HAZ decreased after PWHT in both steels, but the dark region was formed near the fusion line in which the hardness was locally high. In the case of Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel, formation of fine Cr-carbides in the weld region near the fusion line by diffusion of C from the base metal resulted in locally high hardness in the dark region. However, the precipitates of the region in the Ni-Cr-Mo low alloy steel were similar to that in the base metal, and the hardness in the region was not greatly different from that in the base metal.

  • In general, structural integrity of rolling stock structures should last more than 25 years. During the lifetime corrosive degradation occurs. For structural design and diagnosis, quantitative relationship between corrosive degradation and variation of mechanical properties such as tensile strength and fatigue strength is needed. In this study, first of all we established the atmospheric corrosion test procedure. At regular intervals using specimens of SM490A and SS400 on the atmospheric corrosion test bed, we carried out tensile and fatigue tests. The fatigue strength decreases as the atmospheric corrosion period increases. In addition we studied the effect of post-weld heat treatment on the tensile and fatigue behaviour and performed electrochemical corrosion tests.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the AE characteristics for the basemetal, PWHT (post-weld heat treatment) and weldment specimens of SA-516 steel during fracture testing. Four-point bending and AE tests were conducted simultaneously. AE signals were emitted in the process of plastic deformation. AE signal strength and amplitude of the weldment was the strongest, followed by PWHT specimen and basemetal. More AE signals were emitted from the weldment samples because of the oxides, and discontinuous mechanical properties. AE signal strength and amplitude for the basemetal or PWHT specimen decreased remarkably compared to the weldment because of lower strength. Pre-cracked specimens emitted even lower event counts than the corresponding blunt notched specimens. Dimple fracture from void coalescence mechanism is associated with low-level AE signal strength for the basemetal or PWHT. Tearing mode and dimple formation were shown on the fracture surfaces of the weldment, but only a small fraction produced detectable AE.

  • The fracture toughness, $J_{IC}$ of high frequency electric resistance welded steel pipe for smooth and side-grooved CT specimen was evaluated by unloading compliance method. The crack growth, .${\delta}a$ was obtained from the equation of Donald and Saxena & Hudak, and $J_{IC}$ was determined from the curve of J-${\delta}a$ relations. The crack growth on the experiment using unloading compliance method is underestimated as compared with ${\delta}a$ measured directly by the SEM, so the reliability of $J_{IC}$ from saxena & Hudak equation is large than that from Donald. The $J_{IC}$ value of side-grooved CT Specimen is estimated less than that of smooth, and this is the effect of the side-groove, the shear-lip of crack tip and the reduction of crack tunnelling phenomena.

  • The effects of heat input (1.5~3.6 kJ/mm) and post weld heat treatment (PWHT, $600^{\circ}C$, 40hr.) on the TMCP HSB600 steel weldments made by GMAW process were investigated. The tensile strengths and hardness of as-welded specimens were decreased as heat input increased, but CVN (Charpy V-Notch) impact energy did not show any differences. The fine-grained acicular ferrite was mainly formed in the low heat input while polygonal and side plate ferrites were dominated in the high heat inputs. Meanwhile, tensile strength and hardness of PWHT weldments were decreased due to the coarsening and globular of microstructure as well as reduction of residual stresses.

  • Welding is the most commonly used method to produce bogie and carbody of Electrical Multiple Units(EMU), because it increases the strength and lowers the weight of EMU. Since bogies are constantly exposed to repeated reacting load during acceleration and deceleration, it is also true that crack normally occurs at welding parts. In this study, we have investigated the fatigue strength of SS400 on welded parts in order to find efficiency of treatment after welding by shot peening and Post-Weld heat treatment(PWHT) with butt welded specimens. The results of fatigue test indicate that the measurement of base material specimen is 236MPa, welded specimen is 132MPa and the specimen of PWHT is 107MPa approximately. We concluded that the measurement of welded specimen and PWHT is approximately 44 and 54 percents lower than the base material specimen, respectively. Another finding is that the peened specimen is approximately 23 and 61 percents higher than the base material specimen in terms of the fatigue in strength of specimens.
