  • Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are retrotransposons present in various metazoan genomes and have been implicated in metazoan evolution as well as in nematodes and humans. The long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposons contain several regulatory sequences including promoters and enhancers that regulate endogenous gene expression and thereby control organismal development and response to environmental change. ERVs including the LTR retrotransposons constitute 8% of the human genome and less than 0.6% of the Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) genome, a nematode genetic model system. To investigate the evolutionarily conserved mechanism behind the transcriptional activity of retrotransposons, we generated a transgenic worm model driving green fluorescent protein (GFP) expression using Human endogenous retroviruses (HERV)-K LTR as a promoter. The promoter activity of HERV-K LTR was robust and fluorescence was observed in various tissues throughout the developmental process. Interestingly, persistent GFP expression was specifically detected in the adult vulva muscle. Using deletion constructs, we found that the region from positions 675 to 868 containing the TATA box was necessary for promoter activity driving gene expression in the vulva. Interestingly, we found that the promoter activity of the LTR was dependent on che-1 transcription factor, a sensory neuron driver, and lin-15b, a negative regulator of RNAi and germline gene expression. These results suggest evolutionary conservation of the LTR retrotransposon activity in transcriptional regulation as well as the possibility of che-1 function in non-neuronal tissues.

  • People have been getting interested in the Orientalism and it has come up in various areas due to scientific progress. I designed uniforms, which was simple and western, to show its symbolic meanings in the Orientalism. And I have been trying to generalize uniforms with originality and beauty. I have studied the process of the Orientalism and its changes and transitions, concepts and origins in history. And I applied the styles of Korean, Japanese and Chineses costume on it. I also referred to characters of uniforms, which already had images of Korea, Japan and China. Firstly, Korean styles have a contrast in colors by application of Taegeuk. And they gave lines with dark colors in black one-piece dress. This makes people who are wearing looking slimmer. White ramie top looks fresh and Korean traditional tie called Maedeup is set up for button. Secondly, Japanese styles were mainly Kimono style, one piece. They changed into two pieces designed to be active. So, it has emphasized the image of Kimono with Obi at the waist. Thirdly, Chinese styles basically are Chipao style, which has a Chinese collar and a long skirt, which has opening. But they gradually changed into short skirts and more open in the chest. For one of them, they gave lines in the side of chest, sleeves and skirt to be more natural. The costumes have kept their positions as a part of mass society that grows and changes with speed. And oriental uniforms are not just uniforms any longer only for work. It is quite symbolic like a 'second face' as it represents images for their countries and enterprises.

  • The Gamrotenghwa of the Choson Dynasty is a unique genre of buddhist painting in that the destiny of the dead souls and the guidance to nirvana are expressed in reality. More than 50 of the Gamrotenghwa are known to be present, and the lower part of the paintings includes a wide assortment of folk customary scenes reflecting the social life style of the time when the painting was drawn, such as difficulties in life. public life, punishment and war. Changes in the costume of the people shown on the customary scenes of the Gamrotenghwa according to the time based changes in painting style were investigated in this study. The results are summarized in three points. First, the costumes of bureaucrats showed a tendency of preservation without any major changes in the painting. On the other hand, costumes of public and entertainer in the scenes were very close to those worn by the people at that time. The realistic description of public life in the painting may establish the value of the Gamrotenghwa as the historical documents. Second, the costume of the people in the painting showed a dual structure as the social positions; bureaucrats wore various official hats, large coats and belts to expose their social prestige. while the general public wore simple and convenient clothing which is divided into shirt and pants. The dual structure of the costume in the painting is in well accordance with that of the later period of Choson dynasty, suggesting that the customary scenes in the painting represent the social life style of the period. Finally, the customary scenes in the Gamrotenghwa are very variegated. which shows a variety of beauty of wearing even though they look coarse in a sense. The diversity of wearing beauty in the picture may contribute to the recreation of the beauty of shape in the new design of Hanbok.

  • This paper deals with free vibrations of the Timoshenko beam supported by two elastomeric bearings at two far ends. The ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such beam is derived, in which both effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation are included as the Timoshenko beam theory. Also, boundary conditions of the free end are derived based on the Timoshenko beam theory. The ordinary differential equation is solved by the numerical methods for calculating natural frequencies and mode shapes. Both effects of the rotatory inertia and shear deformation on natural frequencies are extensively discussed. Also, relationships between natural frequencies and slenderness ratio, foundation modulus and bearing length are presented. Typical mode shapes of bending moment and shear force as well as deflection are given in figures which show the positions of maximum amplitudes and nodal points.

  • The temporal and spatial distributions of soot volume fractions were measured for single toluene droplet flames as a function of pressure under the normal-gravity condition. In order to characterize the transient nature of the flame and sooting regions, a full-field light extinction and subsequent tomographic inversion technique was used. The reduction in sooting as a function of pressure was assessed by comparison of the maximum soot volume fractions at several vertical positions along the axis above the droplet. The maximum soot volume fraction was reduced by 70% when the pressure was reduced by 60% from 1 atm to 0.4 atm. The reduction in sooting is attributed to variation of the geometric configuration of flame which reduces the system Grashof number as well as only the change in the adiabatic flame temperature as the pressure decreases. The gravimetrically-measured total soot yield was also compared to the optically-measured soot volume fraction to obtain a correlation between the two measurements. As a result, the total soot yield was linearly proportional to the optically-measured maximum soot volume fraction and linearly reduced as the pressure decreased. Accordingly, the non-intrusive full-field light extinction-measurements were able to be calibrated not only to measure soot volume fraction, but to simultaneously evaluate the total soot yield emitted from the toluene droplet flame (which is useful in the practical application).

  • Total Skin Electron Beam Therapy (TSEBT) is one of the most effective treatment methods for superficially disseminated skin cancer or cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. We have treated a patient with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. We have used Stanford technique using six dual field. The nominal energy of electron beam was 4MeV. SSD was 390cm and the gantry angles of dual fields were 76$^{\circ}$ and 104$^{\circ}$. The dose profiles of single field and dual fields were measured with films and a Farmer type ion chamber. The field uniformity was 10% over the patient's surface. During treatment, the patient was placed in six different positions for homogenous dose distribution over the body surface. The areas not directly exposed to the path of the electron beam (soles of feet, perineum and vertex of scalp) were boosted with 7MeV electron beam. During the treatment, lens, fingernails and toenails were shielded.

  • Recently, an intelligent service robot is being developed for use in guiding and providing information to visitors about the building at public institutions. The intelligent robot has a sensor at the bottom to recognize its location. Four wheels, which are arranged in the form of a lozenge, support the robot. This robot cannot be operated on uneven ground because its driving parts are attached to its main body that contains the important internal components. Continuous impact with the ground can change the precise positions of the components and weaken the connection between each structural part. In this paper, the design of the suspension system for such a robot is described. The dynamic model of the robot is created, and the driving characteristics of the robot with the designed suspension system are simulated. Additionally, the suspension system is optimized to reduce the impact for the robot components.

  • A localization system for indoor robots is an important technology for robot navigation in a building. Our localization system imports the GPS system and consists of more than 3 satellite beacons and a receiver. Each beacon emits both an ultrasonic wave and radio frequency. The receiver in the robot computes the distance from it to the beacon by measuring the flying time difference between ultrasonic wave and radio frequency. It then computes its position with the distance information from more than 3 beacons whose positions are known. However, the distance information includes errors caused from the ultrasonic sensors; we found it to be limited to within one period of a wave (${\pm}2\;cm$ tolerance). This paper presents a method for predicting the maximum position error due to distance information errors by using Taylor expansion and singular value decomposition (SVD). The paper also proposes a measuring parameter such as sensitivity to represent the accuracy of the indoor robot localization system in determining the robot's position with regards to the distance error.

  • The gender equality consciousness of public service workers is important since it is not only existed as attitudes and behaviors but also utilized as a policy tool. Therefore, it should be developed to improve practical abilities which enable them to analyze and integrate their own works based on gender perspective. This study examined the experiences and attitudes toward gender egalitarianism education, based on a survey of public service workers in Daejeon city(699 men and 457 women). The results can be used for desirable changes of gender egalitarianism education. We can see that the will of men to participate in the gender egalitarianism education is lower compared to it of women. To expand gender egalitarianism education, the motivation and legislation for participating in education, and the development of various education programs according to gender, age and positions are needed.
