A Study on the Port Technology Policy and Development Strategy (국내 항만기술 개발정책과 중장기 발전방안 연구)

  • The environmental changes in ports such as large size, high technology, and efficiency are greatly realized and advanced ports focus on the research and development for the port technology to be hub ports in each continent. It is necessary to continuously develop the port technology in order to cope with those changes. The continuous development of the port technology leads to not only the growth of the domestic port industry but also the preoccupation of the world's industry and the increase of the export amount related to the port technology. In this paper the state of the art in the domestic and foreign port technology are surveyed proposes the development policies and strategies of the domestic port technology are suggested.

  • Relative importance of maritime transport that takes charge of main current of freight in country' economy is very large. Especially, port and facility carry out important role which treats freight of import and export smoothly and improves international trade as turning point, to achieve key role on connection and association between sea and land. For such reason, enlargement of port facilities or development of port needs to grasp exactly the utilization of port, attributes and selective factors of shipper. On the other hand, the amounts of physical distribution on Mokpo port located in Korean west coast are increasing, with fast economic growth of East Asian including China. This study uses discrete choice model that is measuring to analyze attribute and characteristic of Mokpo port, and analyzes port selection by decision factors of shipper. This paper composed a questionnaire using the result of preceding research, to decide port selection factor among competitive ports. Through factor analysis on a basis of the questionnaire' result, five principal components were extracted. These are resorted out by Logit model, to grasp competitive elements of port. This research fin present direction which raises competitive power of ports in west coast of Korea, especially on alternative and concentration of middle-class port as Mokpo may be useful.

A Study on Port Alliance between Incheon Port and Major Ports in Northern China

  • Recently, amount of cargoes from main ports in Northeast Asia have rapidly increased and as well surplus port development in same region corresponded with the boom in external trade that resulted from successful export-oriented economics strategy by China, Japan and South Korea. To cope with this business circumstances, a certain form of port alliance is desperately needed to provide a suitable service to customer and establish their countervailing power against the shipping alliance. Nevertheless, Incheon seaport has not made a definite port alliance system with main ports in Northern China yet. Thus, the purpose of this study is to identify the key success factors to form a port alliance through examining previous studies. We have benchmarked previous studies which are related to main ports in global region and the questionnaire on customers of ports. By studying this, we are able to suggest a few strategies for forming successful port alliance to enhance Incheon port's capabilities in the long term plan. As a policy proposal, this study suggests Incheon port and main ports in Northern China should construct a logistics infrastructure through mutual investment and provide an incentive system when the ocean carrier makes port call to both ports.

Effects of the Exchange Rate and Industrial Activity on Export to and Import from the Southeast Asia Via Korean Port (환율과 경기가 우리나라의 대 동남아시아 항만 수출입에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper investigates the determinants of trade on Southeast Asia via Korean ports using monthly data. I employ Johansen cointegration methodology since the model must be stationary to avoid the spurious results. Johansen(1988) and Johansen and Juselius(1990) propose two statistics for testing the number of cointegrating vectors: the trace and maximum eigenvalue statistics. The null hypothesis that there is no cointegrating vector should be rejected at the 5% level. The results indicate that there is a long-run relationship between trade and variables. This also suggests that these variables have a meaningful equilibrium relationship between trade and variables would not move too far away from each other, displaying a comovement phenomenon for the export and import. Apparently, the error correction term reflects market information in a state of disequilibrium that is bound to be corrected when moving toward the long-run level.

  • Port industry has achieved a remarkable growth with a help from increase in container shipment and above all, transshipment that reflects international competitive power of Port industry amounts to 36% of the national harbor shipment. Therefore, this study speculates the impact of Port industry on national economy using the inter-industry relation table. As it considers the reason why international competitive power in Port facilities decreased as absence of investment, it is to present an effective investment plan for Port industry. Though Port industry as one of main national key industries play an important role in production of national economy, it has been evaluated as having relatively less importance. And when Port industry is managed independently, relying on foreign countries without improvement, price increase due to improper agreement of foreign enterprises and problems relating to securing safe transportational vehicles will have tremendous impact on national economy. And they should try to create added-value and support re-export of the exported and imported shipment through their processing and packaging by making Port zones bonded area. production of national economy, it has been evaluated as having relatively less importance. A study on strategies to attract container cargoes in Incheon - with the case of container O/D analysis - (인천항 컨테이너 화물 유치방안에 대한 연구 -컨테이너 OD분석을 중심으로-)

  • This paper aims to provide strategies to attract container cargoes for the Incheon port by analysing O/D of the container cargoes with the year-2004 export and import data from. The Korean customs service. O/D analysis was carried out with establishing optimal zones, which are defined as City, Gun, Gu(Korean administrative districts) to which the export-import service can be provided from a certain port with minimized freight(or transport) cost and stevedoring fee. For the Incheon port, 35 administrative districts including Seoul and Incheon in Kyunggi-Do and Kangwon-Do are recognized as the optimal zones, and approximately 25.50% of around 2.02-million-TEU per year of the cargoes from the zones are exported and imported through the port. The strategies to attract container cargoes was suggested by comparing the Incheon port to supposed-competitive ports. The Busan port(64.89%), Guangyang port(4.46%) and Pyeongtaeck port(3.35%) are supposed as the competitive ports which have a large proportion of handling the cargoes from the optimal zones. When comparing the Incheon port to these ports. The Incheon port requires a distinctive cost strategy, providing incentives to attract shipping companies and cargoes, improving efficiency related to loading-unloading at the port, and reinforcing Feeder-Network and advertisements about cost-saving to the shippers(the owners of goods) in the national capital region Consequently, the mentioned requirements are suggested as the strategies to attract cargoes for the Incheon port.

Regional Structure of International Physical Distribution through Clearance Depot (통관거점을 이용한 국제물류의 지역구조)

  • This study is to clarify regional structure and connection of international physical distribution through clearance depot of Cheongju customs of inland location. The trade of clearance depot of Cheongju customs industrial characteristics reflects of territorial hinterland. As origins and destinations of freight as exports and imports region, territories of Cheongju customs trade mainly with Japan, China, and USA. Origin and destination of freight of Cheongju customs territory are hinterland and foreland of Incheon International Airport and Busan port. In case of export, foreland of Busan port is board, and in case of import, the hinterlands of Incheon International Airport and Busan port are similar. Clearance depot of inland-located Cheongju is construct by the advantages of rapidness and inexpensive cost. And the kind of freight and system of physical distribution of each enterprise show different characteristics. For each export and import freight, each shipper corporation has its own physical distribution system, and structure of international distribution is classified into export pattern of bonded industry and bonded warehouse. Again the patterns of bonded warehouse are distinguished free on board price system with division of labor in base of production in overseas, free on board price system, and cost-insurance-freight with division of labor in base of production in overseas. These Phenomena are caused by transaction between headquarter and its overseas corporation, initiative freight handling of export corporation, choice of inexpensive cost, and international convention.

  • The productivity of container terminal is usually regarded same as the productivity of quay crane. Operation of quay crane for the export is started from picking up a container in yard block. In doing so, smooth flow of container is vital to maximize the productivity of quay crane. Improvement of quay crane's productivity means improvement of entire productivity in container terminal, which reinforces the competitiveness of terminal consequently. Setting effective plan is essential to improve work flow from yard to quay crane. For optimal plan, it is necessary to gather information about exact time schedule of come-and-go containers for loading, amount of containers that will be come to terminal. Generally, the arrival time of containers and the amount of containers are definite and predictable. However, in the case of export container, the arrival time of containers is random and unpredictable. This study examines the pattern of coming-in containers as time goes in container yard and provides the solution to how to plan export yard considering the change of state in terminal and adapt it to container yard plan

  • This study investigates cargo management issues in the shipbuilding and marine equipment industry. Problems are analyzed concerning the absence of information about exact cargo location and condition, damage, loss, replacement, and transportation delays during the import and export process. Then, improvements are proposed to solve these problems. To illustrate, real time information about the status and location of cargo should be communicated between import/export and logistics companies to facilitate material logistics for shipbuilding & marine equipment. In addition, a standard cargo classification and recognition system should be established to reduce delivery delays and mistakes, so then enhancing logistical efficiency. Moreover, it is also necessary to nurture professional shipbuilding & marine equipment forwarders to strengthen their expertise with professional education and training.

A Study on the Effect of Financial Cooperation in East Asia on the Export-Import Logistics (수출입 물류에 동아시아 금융협력이 미치는 영향 분석)

  • Nowadays, a capital flow and intimacy of financial system among countries have been increasing in global financial environment. So it is easily possible that the risk of some countries which are in financial crisis infects other countries in the world. A recent global financial crisis reminds countries in East Asia of advancing the financial cooperation as well as financial integration. Countries in East Asia agreed with the Chiang Mai Initiative to prevent a recurrence of financial crisis in East Asia. A bilateral swap arrangement of the CMI has several purposes in order to offer foreign currency liquidity against economic crisis, remove the opportunity cost of foreign exchange reserve, push ahead the financial integration, increase the export-import logistics and so on. This paper analyzes the effect of financial cooperation in East Asia on the export-import logistics with random effect estimation and fixed effect estimation. As a result, each of country in East Asia is able to increase almost 10.3% of the export-import logistics on average.
