Purpose: This study was performed to investigate mechanical properties of the porous Ti implants according to porosity. Porous Ti implant will be had properties similar to human bone such as microstructure and mechanical properties. Methods: Porous Ti implant samples were fabricated by sintering of spherical Ti powders(below $25{\mu}m$, $25{\sim}32{\mu}m$, $32{\sim}38{\mu}m$, and $38{\sim}45{\mu}m$) in a high vacuum furnace. Specimen's diameter and height were 4mm and 40 mm. Surface and sectional images of porous Ti implants were evaluated by scanning electron microscope(SEM). Porosity and average pore size were evaluated by mercury porosimeter. Young's modulus and tensile strength were evaluated by universal testing machine(UTM). Results: Porosity of Implant was increased according to larger particle size of the powder. Boundary portions of particles are sintered fully and others portions were formed pore. Young's modulus was decreased by formed porous structure. Tensile strength was decreased according to larger the particle size of the powder, but higher than human bone. Conclusion: If prepared by adjust the porosity of the porous Ti implant will be able to resolve the stress shielding phenomenon.
In general, Dye-sensitized Solar Cells(DSCs) consist of the nanocrystalline titanium dioxide($TiO_2$) layer which is fabricated on a transparent conductive oxide(TCO) layer such as $F/SnO_2$ glass, a dye adhered to the $TiO_2$, an electrolyte solution and platinum-coated TCO. Among these components, two TCO substrates are estimated to be about 60% of the total cost of the DSCs. Currently novel TCO-less structures have been investigated in order to reduce the cost. In this study, TCO-less DSCs consisting of titanium electrodes were investigated. The titanium electrode is deposited on top of the porous $TiO_2$ layer using electron-beam evaporation process. The porosity of the titanium electrode was found out by the SEM analysis and dye adhesion. As a result, when the thickness of the titanium electrode increased, the surface resistance decreased and the conversion efficiency increased relatively.
Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the release behavior of bioactive materials as a BMP-2 embedding on the porous titanium implant. Methods: Porous Ti implant samples were fabricated by sintering of spherical Ti powders in a high vacuum furnace. Specimens diameter and height were 4mm and 10mm. Embedding materials were used to stamp ink. Sectional images, porosity and release behavior of porous Ti implants were evaluated by scanning electron microscope(SEM), mercury porosimeter and UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer. Results: Internal pore structure was formed fully open pore. Average pore size and porosity were $8.993{\mu}m$ and 8.918%. Embedding materials were released continually and slowly. Conclusion: Porous Ti implant was fabricated successfully by sintering method. Particles are necking strongly each other and others portions were vacancy. Therefore bioactive materials will be able to embedding to porous Ti implants. If the development of the fusion implant of the bioactive material will be able to have the chance to several patients.
Porous metals are called as a new material of 21th century because they show not only extremely low density, but also novel physical, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and acoustic properties. Since the late in the 1990's, considerable progress has been made in the production technologies of many kinds of porous metals such as aluminum, titanium, nickel, copper, stainless steel, etc. The commercial applications of porous metals have been increased in the field of light weight structures, sound absorption, mechanical damping, bio-materials, thermal management for heat exchanger and heat sink. Especially, the porous metals are promising in automotive applications for light-weighting body sheets and various structural components due to the good relation between weight and stiffness. This paper reviews the recent progress of production techniques using molten metal bubbling, metal foaming, gas expansion, hollow sphere structure, unidirectional solidification, etc, which have been commercialized or under developing, and finally introduces several case studies on the potential applications of porous metals in the area of heat sink, automotive pannel, cathod for Ni-MH battery, golf putter and medical implant.
We have studied a method for the preparation of hybrid $carbon/TiO_2$ complexes involving pitch coating, pitch binding and the penetration of titanium n-butoxide(TNB) solution with porous carbon. The photocatalysts were investigated with surface textural properties and SEM morphology, structural crystallinity and elemental identification between porous carbon and $TiO_2$, and dye decomposition performance. For the all $carbon/TiO_2$ complexes prepared by some kinds of different methods, the excellent photocatalytic effect for dye degradation should be attributed to the both effects between photo-decomposition of the supported $TiO_2$ and adsorptivity of the porous carbons.
The alloys were prepared by a non-consumable vacuum arc melting and homogenized at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs. Two kind of surface modifications were performed alkali treatment in 5.0M NaOH solution subsequent and heat treatment in vacuum furnace at $600^{\circ}C$, and were oxidizing treatment at the temperature range of 550 to $750^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. After surface modification, these samples were soaked in SBF which consists of nearly the same ion concentration as human blood plasma. Cytotoxicity tests were performed in MTT assay treated L929 fibroblast cell culture, using indirect methods. A porous and thin activated layer was formed on Titanium and Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy by the alkali treatment. A bone-like hydroxyapatite was nucleated on the activated porous surfaces during the in vitro test. However, Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloys showed better bioactive properties than Titanium. According to XRD results, oxide layers composed of mostly $TiO_2$(rutile) phases. Cytotoxicity test also revealed that moderate oxidation treatment lowers cell toxicity and Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy showed better results compared with Titanium.
Well-ordered porous materials are very promising in orthopedics since they allow tailoring the mechanical properties. Finite element (FE) analysis is commonly used to evaluate the mechanical behavior of well-ordered porous materials. However, FE results generally differ importantly from experimental data. In the present article, three types of manufacturing irregularities were characterized on an additive manufactured porous titanium sample having a simple cubic unit-cell: strut diameter variation, strut inclination and fractured struts. These were included in a beam FE model. Results were compared with experimental data in terms of the apparent elastic modulus (Eap) and apparent yield strength (SY,ap). The combination of manufacturing irregularities that yielded the closest results to experimental data was determined. The idealized FE model resulted in an Eap one order of magnitude larger than experimental data and a SY,ap almost twice the experimental values. The strut inclination and fractured struts showed the strongest effects on Eap and SY,ap, respectively. Combining the three manufacturing irregularities produced the closest results to experimental data. The model also performed well when applied to samples having different structural dimensions. We recommend including the three proposed manufacturing irregularities in the FE models to predict the mechanical behavior of such porous structures.
Anodizing to form oxide layers on the pure titanium was performed in the electrolyte containing 1.5M $H_2SO_4$, 0.2M $H_3PO_4$, and 2.5wt.% $CuSO_4$ using the ac-biased arc anodizing technique. Titanium oxide layers anodized with different applied voltages, voltage-elevating rates, and anodizing times were investigated. In addition, thermal oxidation test under an atmospheric environment for the arc-anodized specimens was carried out. The thickness of oxide layers were not affected by the voltage-elevating rates, but increased slightly with the increase of anodizing times. The thickness of oxide layers were increased with the increase of voltages, and increased remarkably in the condition of 200V. The size and number of the pore observed in the center of the porous cell were decreased with increase of applied voltage. From the result of thermal oxidation test, it revealed that oxide layer formed by arc anodizing more effective to prevent oxidation of pure titanium.
The surface was transformed to porous titanium oxide by the anodization of pure titanium. Titanium was anodized in non-aqueous and aqueous electrolytes at different potentials between 5 V and 150 V. Various electrolytes were compose of ethylene glycerol, $H_2SO_4,\;NH_4F\;and\;H_2O$. We obtained titania nanotube arrays on the micro pore of titanium. Micro pores and nano tubes were obtained by anodization at high potentials and low potentials, respectively. Morphologies of nanotubes and micro pore were characterized by FE-SEM. The unique surface structure is very attractive to electrical and medical applications such as gas sensor, biosensor, dental implant and stent.
The oxidation behavior of commercial pure titanium is investigated in the temperature range of $727^{\circ}C{\sim}950^{\circ}C$ in mixed gases. The weight change is measured by TGA during oxidation in mixed gases. The oxidation behavior indicated by weight gain or the growth of oxide layer is based on the linear rate law at high temperatures. The structure of the oxide scale formed during oxidation is analysed by optical microscopy, electron probe microanalyzer, scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction. Oxide scales have a $TiO_2$ structure, and are constituted with multi-layered or two layered porous external one and a dense internal one. Ti-O solid solution region is formed at the interface of metal and scale layer. The formation of oxide scale is influenced by the oxidation temperature, time, crystal structure and the condition of atmosphere.
