  • In this study, in order to increase surface ability of hardness and corrosion of magnesium alloy, anodizing and sealing with nano-diamond powder was conducted. A porous oxide layer on the magnesium alloy was successfully made at $85^{\circ}C$ through anodizing. It was found to be significantly more difficult to make a porous oxide layer in the magnesium alloy compared to an aluminum alloy. The oxide layer made below $73^{\circ}C$ by anodizing had no porous layer. The electrolyte used in this study is DOW 17 solution. The surface morphology of the magnesium oxide layer was investigated by a scanning electron microscope. The pores made by anodizing were sealed by water and aqueous nano-diamond powder respectively. The hardness and corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloy was increased by the anodizing and sealing treatment with nano-diamond powder.

  • Two approaches for the fabrication of tailored powder composites with specially distributed pore-grain structure and chemical composition are investigated. Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) followed by microwave sintering is employed to obtain functionally graded materials (FGM) by in-situ controlling the deposition bath suspension composition. $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ and zeolite FGM are successfully synthesized using this technique. In order to fabricate an aligned porous structure, unidirectional freezing followed by freeze drying and sintering is employed. By controlling the temperature gradient during freezing of powder slurry, a unidirectional ice-ceramic structure is obtained. The frozen specimen is then subjected to freeze drying to sublimate the ice. The obtained capillary-porous ceramic specimen is consolidated by sintering. The sintering of the graded structure is modeled by the continuum theory of sintering.

  • Porous and net-shaped tantalum powder for a capacitor was formulated in a SHS (self-propagating high-temperature synthesis) process. However, this powder, which has weak strength among its particles and low flow ability, cannot be used for a capacitor. Therefore, this powder was sintered in a high-vacuum furnace to increase agglomeration to improve the flow ability, bonding strength among the particles, and shrinkage during pellet sintering. Finally, it was deoxidated with 2 wt% Mg powder to remove the increased surface oxygen that arose during the sintering process. The final product was analyzed in terms of its chemical and physical properties and was compared with a commercial powder used by a capacitor manufacturer.

  • Silicon alloys are considered promising anode active materials to replace Li-ion batteries by graphite powder, because they have a relatively high capacity of up to 4200 mAh/g, and are environmentally friendly and inexpensive ECO-materials. However, its poor charge/discharge properties, induced by cracking during cycles, constitute their most serious problem as anode electrode. In order to solve these problems, Si-Ge-Al alloys with porous structure are designed as anode alloy powders, to improve cycling stability. The alloys are melt-spun to obtain the rapidly solidified ribbons, and then ball-milled to make fine powders. The powders are etched using 1 M HCl solution, which gives the powders a porous structure by removing the element Al. Subsequently, in this study, the microstructures and the characteristics of the etched powders are evaluated for application as anode materials. As a result, the etched porous powder shows better electrochemical properties than as-milled Si-Ge-Al powder.

  • This study investigated the high temperature oxidation behavior of Ni-22.4%Fe-22%Cr-6%Al (wt.%) porous metal. Two types of open porous metals with different pore sizes of 30 PPI and 40 PPI (pore per inch) were used. A 24-hour TGA test was conducted at three different temperatures of $900^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$. The results of the BET analysis revealed that the specific surface area increased as the pore size decreased from 30 PPI to 40 PPI. The oxidation resistance of porous metal decreased with decreasing pore size. As the temperature increased, the oxidation weight gain of the porous metal also increased. Porous metals mainly created oxides such as $Al_2O_3$, $Cr_2O_3$, $NiAl_2O_4$, and $NiCr_2O_4$. In the 40 PPI porous metal with small pore size and larger specific surface area, the depletion of stabilizing elements such as Al and Cr occurred more quickly during oxidation compared to the 30 PPI porous metal. Ni-Fe-Cr-Al porous metal's high-temperature oxidation micro-mechanism was also discussed.

  • Porous alumina was fabricated from pressureless powder packing forming method using powders granulated by spray drying. It was investigated the pore size distribution of fabricated porous alumina. The results of microstructural observation showed that intraganular pore size and intragranular pore size. At 1700$^{\circ}C$ there were no intragranular pores but it showed homogeneous distribution of intergranular pore size. The bending strength and shrinkage increased as porosity decreased. In case of thermal shock resistance sudden decrease of bending strength to $\Delta$T was not shown because intergranular large pore prevented sudden crack propagation.

  • Porous ceramics were fabricated from pressureless powder packing forming method using mullite and cordierite powders granulate by spray drying. The bending strength and shrinkage of porous ceramics were increased and their porosity were decreased with increasing temperature. It showed homogeneous distribution of 2$\mu\textrm{m}$ intergranular pores of mullite at 1400$^{\circ}C$, 2.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ intergranular pores of cordierite at 1300$^{\circ}C$ respedtively. Above that temperature intragranular particles were sintered and sintering by intergranular necking was extremely proceeded. In the test of thermal shock resistance sudden decrease of bending strength to $\Delta$T was not shown because intergranular large pore prevented sudden crack propagation.

  • Porous alumina ceramics are involved in many industrial applications due to the exceptional properties of these products. This study addresses the preparation of porous alumina ceramics using hollow microspheres as a pore-forming agent and slip casting as a green-body-forming technique. A uniform distribution of pores is a basic requirement of a porous material. This study investigates three different slurry systems, i.e., as-prepared alumina slurry, alumina slurry electrostatically dispersed by hydrochloric acid (HCl), and slurry dispersed by the commercial dispersant 'Darvan C-N'. At a low viscosity, the hollow microspheres in the slurry tend to float, which causes a non-uniform pore distribution. To avoid this phenomenon, the viscosity of the slurry was increased to the extent that the movement of hollow microspheres ceased in the slurry. As a result, a uniform pore distribution was achieved.

  • Using microwave synthesized HAp nano powder and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as a pore-forming agent, the porous biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramics were fabricated depending on the sintering temperature. The synthesized HAp powders was about 70-90 nm in diameter. In the porous sintered bodies, the pores having $150-180\;{\mu}m$ were homogeneously dispersed in the BCP matrix. Some amounts of pores interconnected due the necking of PMMA powders which will increase the osteoconductivity and ingrowth of bone-tissues while using as a bone substrate. As the sintering temperature increased, the relative density increased and showed the maximum value of 79.6%. From the SBF experiment, the maximum resorption of $Ca^{2+}$ ion was observed in the sample sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$.
