  • Composite polymer electrolyte membranes based on porous supports have been recognized as an alternative for fuel cell applications since it can provide both mechanical as well as electrochemical stabilities. This mini-review highlights recent advances in supported composite polymer electrolyte membranes using porous matrix and nanofibrous supports. In addition, a comprehensive table listing a wide range of anion and proton exchange pore filling membranes was provided at the end of the review.

  • Porous chitosan and chitin membranes were prepared by using silica particles as porogen. Membrane preparation was achieved via the following three steps: (1) chitosan film formation by casting an chitosan solution containing silica particles, (2) preparation of porous chitosan membrane by dissolving the silica particles by immersing the film into an alkaline solution and (3) preparation of porous chitin membrane by acetylation of chitosan membrane with acetic anhydride. The optimum preparation conditions which could provide a chitosan and chitin membranes with good mechanical strength and adequate pure water flux were determined. To allow protein affinity, a reactive dye (Cibacron Blue 3GA) was immobilized on porous chitosan membrane. Binding capacities of affinity chitosan and chitin membranes for protein and enzyme were determined by the batch adsorption experiments of BSA protein and lysozyme enzyme. The maximum binding capacity of affinity chitosan membrane for BSA protein is about 22 mg/mL, and that of affinity chitin membrane for lysozyme enzyme is about 26 mg/mL. Those binding capacities are about $several{\sim}several$ tens times larger than those of chitosan and chitin-based hydrogel beads. Those results suggest that the porous chitosan and chitin membranes are suitable in affinity filtration chromatography for large scale separation of proteins.

  • In the present paper, the hydrodynamic properties of a Rahmen type flexible porous breakwater with dual fixed pontoon system interacting with obliquely or normally incident small amplitude waves are numerically investigated. This system is composed of dual vertical porous membranes hinged at the side edges of dual fixed pontoons, and a submerged horizontal membrane that both ends are hinged at the steel frames mounted pontoons. The dual vertical membranes are extended downward and hinged at bottom steal frame fixed into seabed. The wave blocking and dissipation mechanism and its effects of permeability, Rahmen type membrane and pontoon geometry, pretensions on membranes, relative dimensionless wave number, and incident wave headings are thoroughly examined.

  • For investigation into gas permeation characteristics, the porous alumina membrane with asymmetrical structure, having upper layer with 10 nanometer under of pore diameter and lower layer with 36 nanometer of pore diameter, was prepared by anodic oxidation using DC power supply of constant current mode in an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid. The aluminium plate was pre-treated with thermal oxidation, chemical polishing and electrochemical polishing before anodic oxidation. Because the pore size depended upon the electrolyte, electrolyte concentration, temperature, current density, and so on, the the membranes were prepared by controling the current density, as a very low current density for upper layer of membrane and a high current density for lower layer of membrane. By control of current quantity, the thicknesses of upper layer of membranes were about $6{\;}{\mu}m$ and the total thicknesses of membranes were about $80-90{\;}{\mu}m$. We found that the mechanism of gas permeation depended on model of the Knudsen flow for the membrane prepared at each condition.

  • With a view to manufacturing membranes for separation of gas mixtures, Al foils were anodized in a 2% oxalic-acid electrolyte at 40V and 80V. When anodizing was completed and Barrier layer existed at the extreme back site of the foil, the anodized foil was made to react with only electrolyte, with switching off the electric power. When the size and density of pores were changed through voltage change, the membr-anes did not show large difference in the permeability. Reacting with electrolyte, the existing Barrier layer turns into porous layer. During this process, several small pores grow from one relatively large pore, getting to the back site. The number and size of the small pores getting to the back surface increase as time passing. This change of Barrier layer into porous layer is thought to be directly related to the permeability change of the membranes. The selectivity of an anodized Al membrane was not related to the voltage change, and was high, being similar to the theoretical selctivity of metallic membranes, according to my observation.

  • For the pervaporation of water-ethanol mixtures, new composite membranes having poly(acrylic acid)-poly (butyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) interpenetrati ng polymer network [PAA-P(BMA-co-MMA) IPN] skin layer supported on porous and crosslinked poly(BMA-co-MMA) were prepared. The morphology of the sub-layer of the composite membrane prepared in the presence of 60 wt% solvent showed cellular structure, on the other hand that of sublayer prepared in the presence of 70 wt% solvent presented very porous interconnected pore structure with macrovoids. Permeation rates of the composite membranes were largely influenced by the morphology of the sublayer. Separation factors increased with the increase of the degree of crosslinking of the PAA network. It was found that permeation rates could be increased by introducing anionic charges on carboxyl groups of the PAA. The permeation rate changes of the PAA-P(BMA-co-MMA) IPN composite membranes according to the feed compositions showed quite similar pattern with the swelling behavior in water-ethanol mixtures.

  • A new pressurized sol-gel coating technique forming membrane layers inside pores of the porous support by the simple operation has been developed. Crack-free and reproducible nanoparticulate silica membranes supported on the porous $\alpha$-alumina tube are synthesized by pressurized coating at 600kPa for 2hr. The pore radius and N2 gas permiability at the room temperature of silica membrane layers are 8$\AA$ and 7.0$\times$10-7mol/$m^2$.s.Pa, respectively. The mechanism of N2 gas transfer through synthesized membrane layers is the perfect Knudeen flow, and the thermal stability of the silica composite membranes is excellent upto 40$0^{\circ}C$.
