  • Reactivity of Char-CO$_2$ gasification of five coals for power generation was investigated with PTGA in the temperature range 850∼1000$^{\circ}C$ and the pressure range 0.5∼2.0 MPa. The effect of coal rank, initial char characteristics and pressure on the reaction rate was evaluated for five chars. The reactivity of low lank coal char was better than that of high rank coal char, and this could be explained with the initial pore structure and surface area of char. Meso/macro-pores of char seems to markedly affect char reactivity by way of providing channels for diffusion of reactant gas into the reactive surface area. For the range of tested pressure, the reaction rate is proportional to CO$_2$ partial pressure and the reaction order ranges from 0.4 to 0.7 for five chars. The effect of total pressure on the reaction rate was small, and kinetic parameters, based on the unreacted core model, were obtained for five chars.

  • Pore structures in porous rock play an important role in hydraulic & mechanical behaviour of rock. Porosity, size distribution and orientation of pores represent the characteristics of pore structures of porous rock. While effective porosity can be measured easily by conventional experiment, pore size distribution is hard to be quantified due to the lack of corresponding experiment. We assessed pore size distribution of Berea sandstone using X-ray CT image based analysis combined with associated images processing, i.e., image filtering, binarization and skeletonization subsequently followed by the assessment of local thickness and star chord length. The aim of this study is to propose a new and effective way to evaluate pore structures of porous rock using X-ray CT based analysis for pore size distribution.

  • Novel membrane technologies that harness ordered nanostructures have recently received much attention because they allow for high permeability due to their reduced flow resistance while also maintaining high selectivity due to their isoporous characteristics. In particular, the opaline structure (made from the self-assembly of colloidal particles) and its inverted form (inverse-opal) have shown strong potential for membrane applications on account of several advantages in processing and the resulting membrane properties. These include controllability over the pore size and surface functional moieties, which enable a wide range of applications ranging from size-exclusive separation to catalytically-reactive membranes. Furthermore, when combined with multiscale architecturing strategies, inverse-opal-structured membranes can be designed to have specific pores or channel structures. These materials are anticipated to be utilized for next-generation, high-performance, and high-value-added functional membranes. In this review article, various types of inverse-opal-structured membranes are reviewed and their functionalization through hierarchical structuring will be comprehensively investigated and discussed.

  • C/SiC composites were prepared by boron nitride (BN)-assisted liquid silicon infiltration (LSI), and their anti-oxidation and mechanical properties were investigated. The microstructures, bulk densities, and porosities of the C/SiC composites demonstrated that the infiltration of liquid silicon into the composites improved them, because the layered-structure BN worked as a lubricant. Increasing the amount of BN improved the anti-oxidation of the prepared C/SiC composites. This synergistic effect was induced by the assistance of BN in the LSI. More thermally stable SiC was formed in the composite, and fewer pores were formed in the composite, which reduced inward oxygen diffusion. The mechanical strength of the composite increased up to the addition of 3% BN and decreased thereafter due to increased brittleness from the presence of more SiC in the composite. Based on the anti-oxidation and mechanical properties of the prepared composites, we concluded that improved anti-oxidation of C/SiC composites can be achieved through BN-assisted LSI, although there may be some degradation of the mechanical properties. The desired anti-oxidation and mechanical properties of the composite can be achieved by optimizing the BN-assisted LSI conditions.

  • To investigate new applications for illite as an additive for carbon-based composites, the composites were prepared with and without illite at different heat-treatment temperatures. The effects of the heat-treatment temperature on the chemical structure, microstructure, and thermal oxidation properties of the resulting composites were studied. As the heat-treatment temperature was increased, silicon carbide SiC formation via carbothermal reduction increased until all the added illite was consumed in the case of the samples heat-treated at $2,300^{\circ}C$. This is attributed to the intimate contact between the $SiO_2$ in the illite and the phenol carbon precursor or the carbon fibers of the preform. Among composites prepared at all temperatures, those with illite addition exhibited fewer pores, voids, and interfacial cracks, resulting in larger bulk densities and lower porosities. A delay of oxidation was not observed in the illite-containing composites prepared at $2,300^{\circ}C$, suggesting that the illite itself absorbed energy for exfoliation or other physical changes. Therefore, if the illite-containing C/C composites can reach a density generally comparable to that of other C/C composites, illite may find application as a filler for C/C composites. However, in this study, the illite-containing C/C composites exhibited low density, even when prepared at a high heat-treatment temperature of $2300^{\circ}C$, although the thermal oxidation of the resulting composites was improved.

  • SiOC film was deposited by the chemical vapor deposition using BTMSM and oxygen mixed precursor. The characteristic of SiOC film varied with increasing of the gas flow rate ratios. The dielectric constant was obtained by C-V measurement using the structure of metal/SiOC film/Si. The space effect due to the steric hindrance between alkyl group at terminal bond of Si-$CH_3$ made the pores, and increased the thickness. However, the SiOC film due to the lowering of the polarization decreased the thickness and then decreased the dielectric constant. After annealing process, the dielectric constant decreased because of the evaporation of the OH or $H_2O$ sites. The thickness was related to the lowering of the dielectric constant by the reduction of the polarization and the thickness decreased with the decrease of the dielectric constant. The refractive index was in inverse proportion to thickness. The trends of the thickness and refractive index did not change after annealing.

  • Weathering and permeability in rocks play a very important role in underground disposal of radioactive waste and their long-term management as well as stability security of rock structures. Weathering and permeability of rocks are largely controlled by the characters of inner structures of rocks. In other words, weathering rate can be accelerated depending on the quantity of pore and microcrack in rocks. Quantitative evaluation of inner structures of rocks can serve as a tool that can assess the degree of weathering of rocks. Therefore it can be said that the understanding of three dimensional distribution of the inner structure of rocks is important for long-term management of rock structures. This study was performed to analyze three dimensional distribution of pore in rocks using Micro Focus X-ray CT on fresh granite and weathered granite from Korea. Results of the analysis clearly show distribution of pore and porosity of the inner rock.

  • This study investigated that status of domestic and international furnace desulfurization and desulfurization characteristics of limestone for fluidized bed use depending on the technology for CFBC one of the CCPs. Limestone-based desulfurizing agent is one of the superior elements which are optimal at around $850-950^{\circ}C$ on high temperature desulfurization. And effectiveness of desulfurization process can be determined by the desulfurization experiment method such as diffusion reaction of the diaphragm of the absorber surface, the size of the particles, the pores of the quantity, size and structure. And, desulfurization efficiency depending on geological and crystallographic properties and calcination process of limestone needs additional research in the future.

  • Nanoporous alumina film was fabricated by anodization of an aluminum sheet. Highly ordered nanowellstructured and nanonets-tructured metal films were fabricated by vacuum evaporation of several metals(Al, Sn, and Co) using the anodic nanoporous alumina film as a template. In this experiment, an anodic porous alumina film with the cell size of 100 nm and the pore diameter of 60 nm was used. The resistance heating method was adopted for evaporating a desired metal, and vapor deposition was carried out under the base pressure of torr. It was founded that whether the structure fabricated by vacuum evaporation is nanowell or nanonet is dependent on the amount of deposited material. When an anodic porous alumina film with the cell size of 100 nm and the pore diameter of 60 nm was used, a nanowell-structured film was fabricated when a sufficient amount of metal was suppled to cover the surface pores. On the other hand, nanonet-structured film was fabricated bellow a half the amount of metal required for nanowell-structured film.

  • The surface of dense polysulfane films was modified through solvent treatment. The modification process consisted of dipping a film for one second in dimethylformamide and then immersing it Into a nonsolvent bath. After being solidified, the original transparent film transformed into an opaque white one, which is due to the light scattering on pores newly developed on the surface. The surface roughness entailing the pore formation was more explicit on a film coagulated by water as nonsolvent than on a film coagulated by isopropanol. The surface-modified films show the better pick-up efficiency than a conventional filter paper on the detaching of radioactive contaminants on the contaminated area. The pick-up efficiency of the film prepared by the water immersion process was superior to that of the film prepared in the isopropanol bath, which was consistent with the surface roughness result. The surface-modified films kept the dense inner structure, playing a major role preventing a possible secondary contamination during the pick-up process.
