  • Horizontal drains are sometimes installed on the ground together with vertical drains in order to drain excess pore water. Taking into account the discharge capacity of horizontal drains, a new analytical method is developed in this paper, and then a new formula for the discharge capacity of horizontal drains is proposed. It is known from the analysis that the effect of the rate of surcharge loading is negligible in determining horizontal discharge capacity. This formula is described as the function of coefficient of consolidation, space of vertical drain, compression index, length of horizontal drains, and thickness of the compressible layer.

It is essential device in the development of the model to analysis the interstitial bone fluid flow of the lacuno-canalicular system to be known that would effect on the bone remodeling. The constitution of the experimental setup is as follows, microscopic image processing system; actuator control unit; load measurement system. A pilot study was used an artificial chemical wood to have similar poroelastic property of bone matrix and conducted to validate the suitability of the measurement system.

  • The hydraulic deterioration of the drainage system in tunnel linings is one of the main factors governing long-term lining-ground interactions during the lifetime of tunnels. Thus, in the design procedure of a tunnel below the groundwater table, the possible detrimental effects associated with the hydraulic deterioration should be addressed. Hydraulic deterioration in double-lined tunnels can occur because of reasons such as clogging of the drainage layer and drain-pipe blockings. In this study, the coupled mechanical and hydraulic interactions between linings due to drain-pipe blockings are investigated using the finite-element method. A double-lined structural model incorporating hydraulic behavior is developed to represent the coupled structural and hydraulic behavior between the linings and drainage system. It is found that hydraulic deterioration hinders flow into the tunnel, causing asymmetric development of pore-water pressure and consequent detrimental effects to the secondary lining.

  • Six rivers were selected as preliminary screening sites to determine the test conditions of Microtox in assessing the toxicity of the sediment. In addition, a pH range of 6.0∼6.5 was established in testing pore water, aqueous extracts and organic extracts. Each extractable fraction of sediment showed different toxicities. Therefore, in order to properly examine the toxicity in the sediment, all extractable fractions of sediment samples needed to be tested with Microtox. Thus, sediment samples were additionally collected from at least 4 secondary sites within 50∼100m area of the primary sampling site to reduce any variation or deviation in toxicity assessment. From all sediment toxicity data that was collected from this study, it was concluded that the Keumho river was the most polluted with the highest sediment toxicity of all the rivers analyzed and needed further detailed research on its pollution problem.

  • In this paper, a simple practical method is introduced in which a simple weight measurement of concrete and finite element numerical analysis are used to determine the moisture transfer coefficient of concrete with a satisfactory accuracy. Six concrete mixtures with different water-to-cementitious material (w/cm) ratios and two pozzolanic materials including silica fume and zeolite were examined to validate the proposed method. The comparison between the distribution of the moisture content obtained from the model and the one from the experimental data during both the wetting and drying process properly validated the performance of the method. With the proposed method, it was also shown that the concrete moisture transfer coefficient considerably depends on the pore water saturation degree. The use of pozzolanic materials and also lowering w/cm ratio increased the moisture transfer coefficient during the initial sorption, and then, it significantly decreased with an increase in the water saturation degree.

  • Vertically oriented nickel nanowire arrays with a different diameter and length are synthesized in porous anodic aluminium oxide templates by an electrodeposition method. The pore diameters of the templates are adjusted by controlling the anodization conditions and then they are utilized as templates to grow nickel nanowire arrays. The nickel nanowires have the average diameters of approximately 25 and 260 nm and the crystal structure, morphology and microstructure of the nanowires are systematically investigated using XRD, FE-SEM and TEM analysis. The nickel nanowire arrays show a magnetic anisotropy with the easy axis parallel to the nanowires and the coercivity and remanence enhance with decreasing a wire diameter and increasing a wire length.

  • Infiltration of rainfall causes railway embankment to be unstable and may result in failure. Basic relationship between the rainfall and stability of railway embankment are defined to analyze the stability of embankment by rainfall. An experimental study for defining of infiltration rate of rainfall into slope is conducted in the lab. The results of Rainfall infiltration show that rainfall infiltration is not equal to infiltration as like reservoir because rate of rainfall infiltration is controlled by slope angle. Based on these results, boundary condition of rainfall is altered and various numerical analysis are performed. The variation of shear strength, the degree of saturation and pore-water pressure for railway slope during rainfall can be predicted and the safety factor of railway slope can be expressed as the function of rainfall amount, namely rainfall index. Therefore, it is judged that this rainfall index can be a good tool for the rail-transport operation control.

  • Porous hydroxyapatite has been widely used as clinical implanted material. However, it has poor mechanical properties. To increase the strength as well as the biocompatibility of the porous HAp based artificial bone, it was fabricated by multi-extrusion process. Hydroxyapatite and graphite powders were mixed separately with ethylene vinely acetate and steric acid by shear mixing process. Hydroxyapatite composites containing porous microstructure were fabricated by arranging it in the die and subject it to extrusion process. Burn-out and sintering processes were performed to remove the binder and graphite as well as increase the density. The external and internal diameter of cylindrical hollow core were approximately 10.4 mm and 4.2 mm, respectively. The size of pore channel designed to increase bone growth (osteconduction) was around 150 ${\mu}m$ in diameter. X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM observation were performed to identity the crystal structure and the detailed microstructure, respectively.

  • Sedimentation and self-weight consolidation tests in cylinder and large model tank and field measurement such as settlement and pore water pressure at each layer by wireless automatic instrumentation system were carried out to investigate the behaviour of dredged marine clay fill. The consolidation behaviour for each reclaimed layer was analyzed from these measured data and numerical analysis result using finite strain consolidation theory. It was fond from this study that the consolidation behaviour of dredged clay fill is heavily dependent on the filling process.
