은줄팔랑나비 개체군의 서식지 내 분포특성 (Distribution Characteristics in the Habitat of Leptalina unicolor Population)

  • In this study, we investigated the spatial range, distribution pattern, temporal appearance, sex ratio, seasonal pattern, and size of the population of Leptalina unicolor locally inhabiting the wetland protection area in the Jaeyaksan Mountain. We found that the butterfly was distributed across four areas at 750 m above sea level and in an area of 96,000 ㎡. in the southeastern slope of the mountain. The discontinuous distribution of the butterflies in the meadow. According to our survey conducted from 2012 to 2014, L. unicolor occurred in May (spring) and July (summer) each year, with the male population more than three times higher than that of the female population. The population size estimated using the mark and recapture method on the back of the hind wing in the two years was as follows: 877±502 and 1243±800 individuals in the spring and summer of 2012, respectively, and 783±429 and 506±365 individuals in the spring and summer of 2014, respectively, suggesting no specific seasonal pattern. The findings of this study are expected to be useful for the conservation of the populations and habitats of L. unicolor, which are currently distributed locally due to a decrease in population size.

Stock identification of minor carp, Cirrhinus reba, Hamilton 1822 through landmark-based morphometric and meristic variations

  • Background: Wild fish populations stock is continuously diminishing in the Indo-Ganges river basin, and the population status of most fishes is unidentified. The identification of the population status and the conservation of commercially important and endemic wild fish populations in this region are crucial for the management. The aim of this paper was to identify the population status of Cirrhinus reba, a promising aquaculture but vulnerable species in the Indo-Ganges river basin in Bangladesh. Methods: C. reba samples were collected from four isolated populations of the Brahmaputra (n = 30), the Padma (33), the Karatoya (31), and the Jamuna Rivers (30) in Bangladesh, and the population status was evaluated using morphometric and landmark comparisons. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test, univariate analysis, discriminant function analysis, and the formation of a dendrogram. Results: Three meristic characters (Pectoral fin rays, caudal fin rays, scale in lateral lines), four morphometric characters (head length, pre-orbital length, post-orbital length, maximum body depth), and truss measurement (4-7) were significantly different among the stocks. The step-wise discriminant function analysis retained 15 variables from morphometric and landmark measurements that significantly differentiated the populations based on the constructed DFI and DFII. Discriminate function analysis also showed that 91.2% of the original groups were classified into their correct samples. The cluster analysis of Euclidean distances placed the Jamuna population in one cluster and the Brahmaputra, the Padma, and the Karatoya populations in the second one. Conclusion : Morphological differences among the stock were probably due to different ancestral origin. This is the first report about population status of C. reba in their natural habitat of the Indian subcontinent. Further genetic studies and the evaluation of environmental impact on C. reba populations in Bangladesh are suggested to support our findings.

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Kaloula borealis (Anura, Microhylidae) in Korea

  • To assess the genetic diversity and population structure of Korean K. borealis, allozyme analysis was performed. The average genetic variability of Korean K. borealis populations was %P=13.2, Ho=0.048, and He=0.045. This value was the lowest in comparison with other Korean amphibian species studied. Also, the value was much lower than that of a reference population from Chinese K. borealis (%P=50, Ho=0.125, He=0.172). Wright's F-statistics showed that Korean K. borealis has distinctly low level of gene flow among regional populations (F$_{ST}$=0.339, Nm=0.487) in comparison with other Korean amphibian species studied. However, the average level of genetic divergence among Korean K. borealis populations was moderate (Nei's D=0.020). Therefore, it appeared that low levels of genetic diversity (He=0.045) and gene flow (Nm=0.487) among regional populations ave probably due to the results of decreasing population size and patchy distribution of this species in Korea.

남산과 광릉의 토양 미소절지동물에 관한 연구 (Soil Microarthropods Fauna at the Namsan and Kwangreung)

  • This research was carried out to investigate soil mictoarthropods fauna in Namsan and Kwangreung which were considered to receive different degreeds of environmental pressures. In basic environmental data, Namsan where under rather accelerated acidification by air contamination and acidic rain showed low pH, tardy decomposition and turnover rate. Population density of soil microarthropods was high in Kwangreung 17,169.8/\ulcorner\ulcorner(coniferous forests), 17,892.6/$\textrm{m}^2$(deciduous forests) than in Namsan, 12,143.8/$\textrm{m}^2$ (coniferous forests), 14,216$\textrm{m}^2$(deciduous forests). Biomass of soil microarthropods was 2,020.219mg/$\textrm{m}^2$ at coniferous forests and 4,270.172mg/$\textrm{m}^2$ at deciduous forests in Namsan, and 3,287.326mg/$\textrm{m}^2$ at coniferous forests and 4326.1mg/$\textrm{m}^2$ at deciduous forests in Kwangreung. Population density constantly showed high in spring, and seasonal fluctuations were correlated with seasonal precipitation. As far as vertical distribution is concerned, population density was concentrated in litter layer as 70% while 30% are in soil layer and also decreased with increasing depth.

Evolutionary Analyses of Hanwoo (Korean Cattle)-Specific Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Genes Using Whole-Genome Resequencing Data of a Hanwoo Population

  • Advances in next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies have enabled population-level studies for many animals to unravel the relationships between genotypic differences and traits of specific populations. The objective of this study was to perform evolutionary analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in genes of Korean native cattle Hanwoo in comparison to SNP data from four other cattle breeds (Jersey, Simmental, Angus, and Holstein) and four related species (pig, horse, human, and mouse) obtained from public databases through NGS-based resequencing. We analyzed population structures and differentiation levels for the five cattle breeds and estimated species-specific SNPs with their origins and phylogenetic relationships among species. In addition, we identified Hanwoo-specific genes and proteins, and determined distinct changes in protein-protein interactions among five species (cattle, pig, horse, human, mouse) in the STRING network database by additionally considering indirect protein interactions. We found that the Hanwoo population was clearly different from the other four cattle populations. There were Hanwoo-specific genes related to its meat trait. Protein interaction rewiring analysis also confirmed that there were Hanwoo-specific protein-protein interactions that might have contributed to its unique meat quality.

알로자임을 이용한 청각의 유전적 다양성과 집단구조 (Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Codium fragile (SURINGAR) HARlOT in Korea Using Allozymes)

  • 알로자임 분석을 이용하여 청각의 유전적 다양성과 집단구조를 분석하였다. 이 종은 한국내 생태적, 경제적 중요한 자원이지만 유전적 분석이 수행되지 않았다. 전분 젤 전기영동으로 이 종의 한국내 네 집단에 대해 알로자임 변이와 유전 구조를 조사하였다. 15개 대립유전자좌위에 대해 9개 좌위(60.0%)가 적어도 한 집단에 대해 다형현상을 나타내었다. 종수준에서 유전적 다양성은 매우 높았다($H_{ES}$=0.144). 집단수준에서 유전적 다양성은 비교적 낮았다($H_{EP}$=0.128). 청각에서 전체 유전적 다양도의 87%는 집단내에 내포되어 있었다. 청각의 번식방법은 유성생식보다는 무성생식이 우세하고, 집단의 단절, 낮은 자손의 생성, 지리적 격리, 그리고 정착과정이 낮은 유전적 다양성을 설명하는 요인으로 사료된다. 조사한 청각 집단에서 세대당 이주하는 개체수는 1.69로 평가되었다. 이 값은 보통 수준의 유전자 흐름으로 해류를 통한 이동이 주된 요인으로 보인다.

Association of Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor-$4{\alpha}$ (HNF-$4{\alpha}$) Polymorphisms (rs1884614) with Type 2 Diabetes in Korean Population

  • The hepatocyte nuclear factor-$4{\alpha}$ (HNF-$4{\alpha}$), transcription factor involved in the regulation of serum lipid and glucose levels, has recently been reported to be associated with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, we investigated the genotype for the rs1884614 of HNF-$4{\alpha}$ gene in Korean population and compared genotype of patients with control group. 100 patients (Male 63, Female 37), who previously underwent type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and 100 controls (Male 36, Female 64) participated in this study. According to our present study there was no association between rs1884614 polymorphism in HNF-$4{\alpha}$ gene and T2DM in Koreans although other reports showed that HNF-$4{\alpha}$ polymorphisms might be associated with the pathogenesis of T2DM in Pima Indians et al. We assume that this finding should contribute to understanding of type 2 diabetes in Korean population in detail at genetic level.

Carbon Dioxide Budget in Phragmites communis Stands

  • The dynamic model was developed to simulate the photosynthetic rate of Phragmites communis stands in coastal ecosystem. The model was composed of the compartments of both climatic and biological variables. The former were photosynthetic photon flux density(PPFD), daily maximum- and minimum-temperature. The latter were combinations of the specific physiological responses of plant organs with the biomass of each organs. The PPFD and air temperature were calculated and using those values, gas exchange rate of each plant organ was calculated at every hour. The carbon budget was constructed using the modelled predictions. Analysis of annual productivity and fluxes showed that yearly gross population productivity, yearly population respiration and yearly net population productivity were 33.4, 21.3 and 12.1 $CO_2ton{\cdot}ha^{-2}{\cdot}yr^{-1}$, respectively. The final result was tested over two stands, produced promising predictions with regards to the levels of production attained. The model can be used to determine production potential under given climatic conditions and could even be applied to plant canopies with analogous biological characteristics.
