The conventional pulping processes in Iran were reviewed in this paper. On account of forest resources restriction, a considerable extent of non-harvestable hardwood forests, the possibility of accessable non-wood resources and Poplar fast-growing species for using in pulp and paper industry was investigate. The cultivated area and abundance of each mentioned raw material (Wheat Straw, Sugarcane Bagasse, Poplars) were specified and the quality of their produced papers were compared in strength and opacity properties. Spruce species data was used for experiments comparisons. Regarding to environmental pollutions, low yield, inflexibility in wood and non-wood species resulted from the existent conventional processes of paper manufacturing, APMP is recommended due to high quality paper, desirable opacity properties, high yield and also the usage for all the raw materials.
Wood of black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia) and bark of poplar(Populus alba x glandulosa), ash(Fraxinus rhynchophylla) and elm(Ulmus davidiana var. japonica) trees were collected, extracted with acetone-$H_2O$(7:3. v/v), fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate and $H_2O$. then freeze dried to get some dark brown powder for bioactive tests. Decay-resistant activity was tested using wood block specimens from the hardwood trees and expressed by weight loss rate. Black locust specimens indicated the best anti-decaying property and poplar blocks were the worst. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities were also investigated against each wood or bark extractives. Antifungal and antibacterial activities did not indicate any significant differences among the tested fractions. In antioxidant activity. ${\alpha}$-tocopherol one of natural antioxidants. and BHT, one of synthetic antioxidants, were used as references to compare with the antioxidant activities of the extracted fractions. Ethylacetate fraction of ash bark indicated the highest activity besides BHT in this test and all fractions of black locust extractives also indicated higher activities compared with the other fractions.
The cellulolytic activities of Aspergillus fumigatus KC-1 was investigated, which showed the most active producer of cellulase among the 256 strains of cellulose-decomposing microorganisms screened in our laboratory. All the examined cellulolytic activities (filter paper-, Avicel-, cotton-, CMC-, salicin- and xylansaccharifying activity) in a culture of A. fumigatus KC-1 grown on 1% popular sawdust pretreated with peroxide alkaline reached a maximum within 4-5 days. The optimum pH and temperature for the enzymatic activity was found to be pH 4.5 and $60^{\circ}C$ respectively. The sawdust of poplar wood delignified with 1% NaOH and 20% peracetic acid succesively recorded the highest hydrolysis rate in the tests of enzymatic saccharification. The major end product of hydrolysis of poplar wood with the cellulolytic enzymes obtained from A. fumigatus KC-1 was glucose with small amount of cellobiose and xylose. It can be concluded from these results that A. fumigatus KC-1 is an advantagous source of a cellulase that is capable of hydrolyzing cellulose to glucose rapidly. The influence of degree of delignification, substrate size and its concentration on the rate of hydrolysis of poplar wood was also discussed.
The yellow poplar is an appropriate species for the age of low carbon green growth, because its absorption rates of ozone is greatly excellent, and also the absorption rates of carbon dioxide causing climate changes is very remarkable. The yellow poplar, which is a kind of rapid growth tree, shows a lack of performance as a structural member, however, it is suitable to use a variety of purposes like furniture materials, interior materials, plywood materials, and so on. In this study, the structural size skin-timbers were made by using the yellow poplar, and the compressive capacity was evaluated, also the numerical model was developed for the various uses. The rectangular shape skin-timber presented a good performance by showing 56.3% residual strength about the solid material. In case of the cylinder shape skin-timber showed a possibility to use diversely as a furniture material, as well as a structural uses, because almost 50% compressive capacity of material even though its residual area rates was 25%. Both rectangular shape and the cylinder shape represented that 'Brooming or end rolling' were the major failure mode, and partly splitting failure mode. The compressive capacity of the rectangular shape which residual area rates was large was higher than the cylinder shape, but it did not show statistical significance about the compressive capacity between them. Thus, it will be possible to use them mixed for a convenience of users. The result of the numerical analysis model was quite similar to actual test of the compressive capacity. Therefore, the yellow poplar can be utilized in the development of various uses by applying numerical analysis model about a variety of shapes and dimensions.
The effect of the treatment with CCFZ, FR-4, and PEG400 from butt end on the dimensional stability and bending properties was examined. Three softwood species such as red pine, Korean white pine and Japanese larch and three hardwood species such as poplar, alder and oak were investigated in this research. Shrinkage of red pine, Korean white pine, poplar, and alder treated with PEG400 decreased. However, there was no significant decrease of shrinkage in Japanese larch and oak. The decrease of shrinkage when moisture content changed from about 20% to 10% was larger than that at any other phase. In regard to the effect of treatment on bending properties, bending MOE and MOR of all specimens treated with PEG400 decreased significantly. Especially in the case of red pine, poplar, and alder treated with PEG400, bending MOR reduced 9%, 14%, and 12%, respectively. Reductions of MOR of the hardwood was also much larger than that of the softwood. However, in all species, treatment with CCFZ and FR-4 did not affect the change of bending MOE and MOR significantly. Comparing the large specimen which also included heartwood with the small specimen which included only treated sapwood, there was a difference in the change of bending MOE and MOR between them. The large specimens of Korean white pine, alder and Poplar, which had a relatively low proportion of sapwood(18~22%), showed the decrease of MOR by 11~13% more than that of small specimens, while red pine, Japanese larch and oak, which had a relatively high proportion of sapwood(35~40%), showed little decrease. It means that bending MOE and MOR of structural wood treated from butt end should be considered in terms of sapwood proportion as well as effect of treated chemicals.

Degradations of pine, yellow poplar and sweet gum by two fungi, Pycnoporus cinnabarinus and Trichophyton rubrum LSK-27 were investigated. P. cinabarinus degraded pine block samples much faster than T rub rum LSK-27, whereas P. cinnabarinus and T rubrum LSK-27 degraded yellow poplar and sweet gum at almost the same rate. In an effort to get a better understanding of how fungi degrade lignin in wood, contents of various functional groups were analyzed. After three-months of degradation of pine flour by these fungi, the following changes were observed: an increase in condensed phenolic OH group and carboxylic acid group content, a decrease in the guaiacyl phenolic OH content, and little change of aliphatic OH group content. Further studies in the degradation of pine flour by P. cinnabarinus indicated that the increase in condensed phenolic OH group content and the decrease in guaiacyl phenolic OH group content occurred in the first month of the degradation. The changes of functional group contents in the degradation of unbleached softwood kraft pulp by P. cinnabarinus had the same trends as those in the degradation of pine flour. That is, structural alteration of lignin due to the kraft pulping process had little effect on how P. cinnabarinus degraded lignin.
In modern societies, people spend most of their time indoors and the temperature and humidity controlled by electrical appliances have a considerable effect on their emotions and health. However, improper operation of the artificial facilities frequently creates substances that are harmful to our body. The importance of controlling the natural humidity of interior materials has therefore attracted significant attention. This study was aimed at quantifying the hygroscopic property of some interior finishing wooden materials. Dried and heat-treated yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) lumbers, oriented strand board, and plywood were selected for this experiment. The moisture adsorption and desorption rates of wooden materials were measured (ISO 24353). Furthermore, the effects of morphological, physical and chemical factors, such as surface microstructure, roughness, and functional groups, on the hygroscopicity were evaluated. The results of this study should contribute to improved accuracy of hygroscopic-property assessments performed on wooden interior materials.

Pulping properties of the imported mixed eucalyptus chips and the domestic yellow poplar chips were investigated for comparing two chips as the raw materials for the hardwood chemical pulp. Soda-AQ (anthraquinone) pulping was applied for this study. The pulp from yellow poplar showed higher pulp yield than pulp from mixed eucalyptus, which comes from the lower hot-water soluble extractives and the higher polysaccharides in yellow poplar chips than those of the mixed eucalyptus chips. The yellow poplar pulp had higher average fiber length and fiber width than those of the mixed eucalyptus pulp, which led to the better respond to beating and the higher tear strength than those of the pulp from the mixed eucalyptus chips.
To characterize thermo-chemical feature of sugar conversion of woody biomass, poplar wood ($Populus\;alba{\times}glandulosa$) powder was treated with supercritical water system. Supercritical water treatment (SCWT) was performed for 60 seconds at different temperatures (subcritical zone 350; supercritical zone $300,\;400,\;425^{\circ}C$) under two pressures $230{\pm}10atm$ as well as $330{\pm}10atm$, respectively, using flow type system. After separation of solid residues from SCWT products, the monomeric sugars in aqueous part converted from poplar wood powder were quantitatively determined by high performance anionic exchange chromatography [HPAEC] equipped with PAD detector and Carbo Pac PA10 column. As the temperature treated increased, the degradation of poplar wood powder was enhanced and ca 83% of woody biomass was dissolved into the water at $425^{\circ}C$. However, the pressure didn't help the degradation of biomass components. At subcritical temperature range, xylose was first formed by degradation of xylan, which is main hemicellulose component in hardwood species, while cellulose degradation started at the transition zone between sub and supercritical conditions and was remarkably accelerated at the supercritical temperature. In the supercritical water system the maximum yield of monomeric sugars amounts to ca. 7.3% based on oven dried wood weight at $425^{\circ}C$.
The air permeability of yellow poplar log cross section before and after organosolv pretreatment was investigated, and the moisture absorption of control and organosolv pretreated rectangular parallelepiped specimens was investigated in this study. It was revealed that the diameters of through pores were enlarged and the number of bigger pore was increased by the organosolv pretreatment. The air permeabilities of the cross sections of yellow poplar log were changed from 1.61 darcy to 23.30 darcy, but their weights were reduced by 5 percent. The equilibrium moisture content of control wood specimen at the exposed relative humidity were 5.9 % at 32 %, 9.7 % at 58 %, 14.8 % at 80.5 %, 19.7 % at 90 %, 25.7 % at 95 % and 29.9 % at 100%. The equilibrium moisture content of the specimens pretreated with the parameter of sulfuric acid catalyst of 0.5 % (w/w) were 19.5 % at 32 %, 29.3 % at 58 %, 39.6 % at 80.5 %, 59 % at 90 %, 111.3 % at 95 % and 111.3 % at 100 %, while those pretreated with the parameter of sulfuric acid catalyst of 1.0 % (w/w) were 17.4 % at 32 %, 23.9 % at 58 %, 27.7 % at 80.5 %, 40.6 % at 90 %, 68.8 % at 95 % and 110.0 % at 100 %. The moisture absorption of organosolv pretreated rectangular parallelepiped specimens was higher than that of control specimen.
