  • Blends of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) were prepared by melt mixing and investigated for optical waveguide devices by using hot embossing process. The glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) of the blends were decreased with increasing PVDF contents. However, the crystalline of PMMA/PVDF blends was not appeared by DSC and XRD due to miscibility between PMMA and PVDF. Shear viscosities and refractive indices of the blends were decreased with increasing PVDF contents. Optical transmittances and absorption losses of the blends were improved with increasing PVDF contents. This is due to a decreasing of polarizability of molecules by fluorine molecule in the PVDF.

  • Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) is most used in piezoelectric polymer industry. Electrode effect on the electrical properties of PVDF has been investigated. al has been used due to fair adhesion for PVDF. Work function of metal plays an important role on the electrical properties of ferroelectrics for top and /or bottom electrode. However, Al has much lower work function than Pt or Au and so leakage current of Al/PVDF/Al may be large. Pt or Au has not been used for electrode of PVDF system due to poor adhesion. PVDF irradiated by Ar+ ion beam with O2 environment takes good adhesion to inert metal. Contact angle of PVDF to triple distilled water was reduced from 75$^{\circ}$ to 31$^{\circ}$ at 1$\times$1015 Ar+/cm2. Working pressure was 2.3$\times$10-4 Torr and base pressure was 5$\times$10-6 Torr. Pt was deposited by ion beam sputtering and thickness of pt film was about 1000$\AA$. in previous study, enhancing adhesion of Pt on PVDF was shown. in this study, effect of electrode on PVDF will be represented.

  • The critical breakthrough pressure through both porous PVDF (polyvinylidenefluoride) and PTFE (poly-tetrafluoroethylene) was measured using pure water, $0.1M{\sim}4.0M$ NaOH aqueous solutions and $0.1M{\sim}3.0M\;NaHSO_3$ aqueous solutions. The critical breakthrough pressure through PTFE was observed to be higher than that through PVDF membrane at the same pore size. The critical breakthrough pressure decreased as the molar concentration of NaOH increased up to 1.0 M reaching the minimum and then increased further after 1.0 M NaOH up to 4.0 M NaOH. On the other hand, the critical breakthrough pressure measured using $NaHSO_3$ aqueous solutions was decreased with increasing the concentration of $NaHSO_3$. The critical breakthrough pressure could be well interpreted with Cantor's equation.

  • An infrasonic wide band transducer fabricated by polyvinylidenefluoride[PVDF] is studied experimentally. The sensitivity of transducer is fixed -53[dB] at frequency range from $10^{-2}$[Hz] to 2[Hz] and fixed -42[dB] range from 10[Hz] to 400[Hz] respectively. The resonance frequency of the element is 14[Hz], which is accord with the mechanical resonance frequency 25.5 [Hz]. We conjecture that the element is applicable to acoustics, communication system, seismological observation and other similiar fields.

  • Numerical simulation and experiments were carried out on the absorption of carbon dioxide using PVDF hollow-fiber membrane contactor. Water or monoethanolamine (MEA) aqueous soluton was used as absorbents. Simulation results showed that the concentration profile of carbon dioxide was less affected by the flow rate of MEA than that of water absorbent. The absorption rate and mass transfer coefficient of carbon dioxide increased as the concentration of MEA increased. The mass transfer coefficients obtained by experiments coincided with those obtained by numerical simulation and theoretical results for $CO_2-water$ system. However, for $CO_2-MEA$ system, the mass transfer coefficients obtained by experiments were lower than those obtained by simulation, while the simulation results agreed well with theoretical results. The durability of plasma-treated hollow fiber membranes was better than that of no plasma-treated ones.

  • Polyvinylidenefluoride and Polytetrafluoroethylene have been irradiated by 1 keV Ar+ ion beam in an $O_2$ environment. Hydrophilic functional groups (such as -(C-O)-,-(C=O)-,-(C=O)-O- and so on) were formed on fluoropolymers. Contact angles of water to PVDF were reduced from $75^{\circ}$ to $31^{\circ}$. Re-increase of contact angle was originated from carbonization phase in case of high dose irradiation above $1{\times}10^{16} Ar^+cm^2$. Contact angles to PTFE decreased at low dose irradiation and were exaggerated to about $140^{\circ}$ due to cone type surface at high dose irradiation. Hydrophilic functional groups have played an important role on adhesion between metal and fluoropolymers by acid-base interaction and chemical bond formation. Adhesion of Pt/PVDF was enhanced by acid-base interaction because Pt is inert metal. Chemical bond formation between Cu and PTFE could enlarge the adhesion strength of Cu/PTFE.

  • In order to develope a clean technology by liquid-supported membrane of ionic liquid/PVDF, the solubility of R22 and HFP gases using BMIBF4 as ionic liquid were measured at temperatures from 0 to $30^{\circ}C$, at total pressures up to 4 bars. The solubility of R22 in this ionic liquid was shown a rapid increasing tendency with increases of pressure and decreases of temperature, respectively, whereas the solubility of HFP was showed only a little in the same conditions. Based on these results, liquid-supported membranes of ionic liquid/PVDF were prepared by variables of the deposition amount of ionic liquid in polymer matrix, PVDF and were applied to the separation of fluoro-gases(R22, HFP) including $N_2$ gas. The permeability of R22 was rapidly increased by depending on the deposition amounts of ionic liquid, whereas both of HFP and $N_2$ were just showed so little. Especially, the diffusivity coefficient and solubility parameter of R22 were increased by lower operating temperatures and increased deposition amount of ionic liquid in 1iquid membrane. In conclusion, the selectivity of R22 against HFP was changed to 10-45 times depending on both of operating temperatures and the deposition amount of ionic liquid in BMIBF4/PVDF liquid membrane.

  • Four membranes were used to separate Chlorella sp. from their culture medium in cross-flow microfiltration (MF) experiments: cellulose acetate (CA), cellulose nitrate (CN), polypropylene (PP) and polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF). It was found that the hydrophilic CA and CN membranes with a pore size of 1.2 ${\mu}m$ exhibited the best performances among all the membranes in terms of permeation flux. The hydrophobicity of each membrane material was determined by measuring the angle between the water (liquid) and membrane (solid). Contact angle measurements showed that deionized (DI) water had almost adsorbed onto the surfaces of the CA and CN membranes, which gave $0.00^{\circ}$ contact angle values. The PP and PVDF membranes were more hydrophobic, giving contact angle values of $95.97^{\circ}$ and $126.63^{\circ}$, respectively. Although the pure water flux increased with increasing pore diameter (0.8 < 1.2 < 3.0 ${\mu}m$) in hydrophilic CA and CN membranes, the best performance in term of filtration rate for filtering a microalgae suspension was attained by membranes with a pore size of 1.2 ${\mu}m$. The fouled membrane pore sizes and pore blocking were inspected using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). MF with large pore diameters was more sensitive to fouling that contributed to intermediate blocking, where the size of the membrane pores is almost equivalent to that of cells.

  • In this research, by using the fluorine gas, the poly(ether sulfone) (PES), the polysulfone (PSf), and the poly-vinylidenefluoride (PVDF) membranes were modified to improve the performance of the optional Gas-Liquid Contactor The SEM, surface contact angle, XPS, and the water transmission minimum pressure test was performed in order to examine the characteristics of which is surface modified. As a result of looking into the surface morphology of from the SEM measurement, we could know that the roughness of the membrane surface increased as the fluorine processing time increased. $-CH_2$, and the perfluoro group of $-CH_3$ were chemically combined with the surface fluorine conversion film surface and the hydrophobicity was exposed to be increased. Moreover, we could know that as the surface fluorinated processing time increased from the surface contact angle and water transmission minimum pressure test, the measured value increased and the overall characteristics were improved.
