분산중합에 의한 폴리스티렌-폴리에테르이미드 코어-셀 입자의 합성 (Preparation of Polystyrene-Polyetherimide Core-Shell Particles by Dispersion Polymerization)

  • 2,2'-Bis[4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) phenyl]propane dianhydride와 3,5-diamniobenzoic acid의 반응에 의해 얻어진 폴리에테르아미드산을 안정제로 사용하여 스티렌을 분산중합하여 폴리스티렌-폴리에테르아미드산 코어-셀 입자를 얻었다. 폴리에테르아미드산의 결합 효율을 증가시키기 위하여 4-vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride를 공단량체로 사용하였다. 에탄올-물(7 : 3) 혼합용액을 반응매질로 사용했을 때 입자의 안정성 가장 높았고 입자의 크기도 비교적 균일하였다. 폴리스티렌-폴리에테르아미드산 코어-셀 입자의 크기는 스티렌의 양에 비례하여 증가하였다. Dimethylformamide-물 혼합용액에서 중합한 경우에는 입자의 크기 분포가 넓어졌다. 폴리스티렌-폴리에테르아미드산 코어-셀 입자의 셀을 화학적으로 이미드화 하여 폴리스티렌-폴리에테르이미드 코어-셀 입자로 변환시켰다.

Controlling the Size and Surface Morphology of Carboxylated Polystyrene Latex Particles by Ammonium Hydroxide in Emulsifier-free Polymerization

  • In emulsifier-free, emulsion polymerization with ionizable comonomer, the ionization of the comonomer is critical in determining the size of the final polymerie particles at sub-micrometer scale. In this study, polystyrene latex beads with carboxylates on the surface were synthesized using acrylic acid as a comonomer. Specifically, ammonium hydroxide was added to the emulsifier-free polymerization system to promote the ionization of acrylic acid by increasing pH. Smaller polystyrene latex particles were produced by increasing the ammonium hydroxide concentration in the reaction system, due to the enhanced stability promoted by the ionization of acrylic acid during the nucleation step. In addition, the surface morphology of the polystyrene latex particles was controlled by the concentration of acrylic acid, the dissociation of which was influenced by the ammonium hydroxide concentration.

유전이동을 이용한 콜로이드 입자의 크기에 따른 분리 (The Separation of Colloid Particles of Different Sizes by Dielectrophoresis)

  • The separation of the small colloidal particles from the mixture of two different sized particles using AC dielectrophoresis phenomenon was studied. The spherical mono-dispersed polystyrene particles dispersed in pure water were put into a perfusion chamber on a substrate, and AC electric fold was applied to the glass substrate with Au electrodes in 4 mm distance. The AC frequency was fixed at 1 kHz and the intensity of the field was varied from 25 V/cm to 160 V/cm. After applying the AC field, the degree of the chain formation that resulted from the particle movements by dielectrophoresis was observed by optical microscope. The mixture of the $1\;{\mu}m\;and\;5\;{\mu}m$ sized polystyrene particles at 0.5 vol% concentrations for each size was set in the dielectrophoresis conditions of 1 kHz and 100 V/cm. At this condition large $5\;{\mu}m$ sized polystyrene particles formed chains, on the contrary the $1\;{\mu}m$ sized polystyrene particles formed no chains. After water flowing for 20 min, it was found that small particles that were floating in the chamber had been removed by the water flowing.

  • Polystyrene (PS) was coated on carbonyl iron (CI) particles via dispersion polymerization to produce core-shell structured CI/PS particles and adopted as magnetorheological (MR) material. Two MR fluids were prepared by dispersing CI/PS and CI particles in silicone oil. Their MR and tribological properties were investigated using a rheometer and a reciprocating friction and wear tester, respectively. Experimental data showed that tribological properties of MR fluid based on CI/PS particles are significantly enhanced compared to those of CI based MR fluid. Sedimentation problem of CI/PS MR fluid was also expected to be improved due to relatively lower density of CI/PS particles.

  • Fullerene/polystyrene ($C_{60}$/PS) nano particle was prepared by using emulsion polymerization. Styrene and fullerene were emulsified in aqueous media in the presence of poly(N-vinyl pyridine) as an emulsion stabilizer, and polymerization was initiated by water soluble radical initiator, potassium persulfate. The obtained nano particles have an average diameter in the range of 400-500 nm. The fullerene contents in the nano particle can be controlled up to 15 wt % by varying the feed ratio, which was confirmed by themogravimetric analysis (TGA) and elemental analysis (EA). The structure and morphologies of the $C_{60}$/PS nano particles were examined by various analytical techniques such as dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), electron diffraction (ED) pattern, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and UV spectroscopy. Unlike conventional $C_{60}$/PS particles initiated by organic free radical initiators, in which the fullerene is copolymerized forming a covalent bond with styrene monomer, the prepared $C_{60}$/PS nano particles contain pristine fullerene as secondary particles homogeneously distributed in the polystyrene matrix.

  • 폴리스티렌 콜로이드 에멀젼 용액에서 물이 증발하게 되면 순간적으로 폴리스티렌 콜로이드 입자들이 물 표면으로 튀어나오게 되며 이러한 입자들 간의 모세관력에 의해 자기조립이 일어나게 되는데, 폴리스티렌 입자의 경우 유효밀도가 물 보다 작아 물 표면 위에 3차원 광결정을 형성하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 현상을 젖음성이 있는 제한된 공간을 가지는 구조를 가지는 유리기판 위에서 일어나도록 함으로써, 3차원의 폴리스티렌 콜로이드 결정이 고속으로 생성되고 기판위로 옮겨질 수 있도록 고안하였다. 고속으로 제작된 폴리스티렌 콜로이드 광결정은 폴리스티렌 입자의 크기 및 광결정 필름의 입사각을 조절하여 가시광 전체 영역의 빛을 선택적으로 반사하는 광필터로 적용해 보았다.

  • Silica monolith powders were prepared by a new procedure where ground powders of proper size distribution were obtained without sieving. An initiator was attached to this ground monolith and polystyrene was bound by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization to give a new stationary phase. The separation efficiency of this phase was found better than that of the polystyrene bound phase based on conventional silica particles and that of the C18 bound silica monolith powders.

  • A correlative analysis has been carried out to predict the average particle size of rubber dispersed phase In high impact polystyrene manufactured by bulk polymerization. To do the correlation, a mechanistic model suggested previously by the author was used for describing the size of stabilizing particles agitated under the turbulent viscous shear subranges in a prepolymerization reactor, where the rubber particles were assumed to be formed at the time of phase inversion in the reactor. Viscosities required for the model were postulated to describe the overall behavior of butadiene rubber and polystyrene mixture along the wide range of conversion. The good agreement between the model and the experimental data from a plant was quite satisfactory for the prediction of the average rubber particle size of high impact polystyrene.

Material Dependence of Laser-induced Breakdown of Colloidal Particles in Water

  • Laser-induced breakdown of colloidal suspensions, such as polystyrene, $ZrO_2$, and $SiO_2$ particles in diameters of 100-400 nm in water is investigated by nanosecond flash-pumped Nd:YAG laser pulses operating at a wavelength ${\lambda}$= 532 nm. The breakdown threshold intensity is examined in terms of breakdown probability as a function of laser pulse energy. The threshold intensity for $SiO_2$ particles ($1.27{\times}10^{11}\;W/cm^2$) with a size of 100 nm is higher than those for polystyrene and $ZrO_2$ particles with the same size, namely $5.7{\times}10^{10}$ and $5.5{\times}10^{10}\;W/cm^2$, respectively. Results indicate that the absorption of five photons is required to induce ionization of $SiO_2$ particles, whereas the other particles necessitate four-photon absorption. These breakdown thresholds are compared with those measured by nanosecond pulses from a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser having a different focusing geometry.

  • 계면활성제(polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVP)와 개시제(benzoyl peroxide, BPO)를 95% 알코올을 용매 속에 첨가하여 styrene monomer로부터 나노 크기의 균일한 분포 영역을 갖는 polystyrene (PS)을 제조하였다. Emulsion polymerization방법을 사용하였으므로 중합과정에서 PS입도 크기에 많은 변수가 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 단량체, 계면활성제 및 개시제 등의 농도 영향은 배제하고 가장 큰 변수들로 고려되는 교반 속도와 초음파 조사시간의 영향을 주로 연구하였다. 초음파 조사시간을 조절한 결과 400 nm의 나노 크기를 갖는 PS 입자를 제조할 수 있었다.
