  • The polypyrrole and polyaniline thin film sensors which were made by chemical polymerization were employed to detect ethanol gas. With a single sensor element we can obtain characteristic patterns of behaviour across a very wide frequency range when measuring either resistance or capacitance. Impedance spectroscopy was employed to study the gas sensing behavior of both capacitance and resistance based sensors with conducting polymer as the active sensing element.

  • Polypyrrole (PPy)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composites were prepared by in situ polymerization of pyrrole on the surface of MWCNTs templates to improve the ammonia gas sensing properties. PPy morphologies, formed on the surface of MWCNTs, were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The thermal stabilities of the PPy/MWCNTs composites were improved as the content of MWCNTs increased due to the higher thermal stability of the MWCNTs. PPy/MWCNTs composites showed synergistic effects in improving the ammonia gas sensing properties, attributed to the combination of efficient electron transfer between PPy/MWCNTs composites and ammonia gas, and the reproducible electrical resistance variation on PPy during the gas sensing process.

  • The polypyrrole prepared with pyrrole monomer, APS and DBSA was synthesized by chemical Polymerization at $V^{\circ}C$ under atmosphere conditions. After dissolving polypyrrole powder to the chloroform including DBSA, polypyrrole film was prepared on the alumina substrate with an interdigitated electrode by using the dip-coating method. This film was soaked in methanol solvent for 1 h at room temperature and heated to $70^{\circ}C$ for 4 h in $N_2$. Initial resistance was increased with the increasing humidity and decreasing temperature. The sensitivity was increased with lower humidity and decreasing temperature. The best linearity was achieved at $25^{\circ}C$ and low humidity of 0%.

  • In continuous research of detecting highly toxic chemical warfare agents to ensure preparedness for the future battlefield, flexible and wearable sensor platforms with high sensitivity are still demanding. Herein we demonstrate a facile fabrication of polypyrrole-based chemiresistors on cellulose paper for the detection of nerve gas simulants. In order to optimize electrical properties of sensor platform, conducting polymer made of polypyrrole were first synthesized on flexible cellulose paper and interdigitated electrodes were formed thereon. Following confirmation of polypyrrole and/or oxime moiety through FT-IR analyses, electrical characteristics were measured in the various ratio of monomers between simple pyrrole and oxime-modified one. Typically for the optimized chemiresistor(2:8 molar ratio of simple pyrrole and oxime-modified one), eleven species of chemical warfare agents were examined and enhanced conductivity(104~105 order) was observed for three simulants(diethyl cyanophosphonate, diisopropyl fluorophosphonate and diethyl chlorophosphonate), which was mainly attributed to intermolecular hydrogen bonding, while no significant responses was recorded against sixteen common volatile organic chemicals.

  • Conducting polymer (Polypyrrole) and Tin oxide ($SnO_{2}$) composite films have been fabricated with layer-by-layer technique. $SnO_{2}$ layer was screen-printed on $Al_{2}O_{3}$ substrate and then was dip-coated with polypyrrole (Ppy). The microstructures of composite films were evaluated by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and FTIR spectral analysis. The change in sensitivity to various VOCs was observed. The target VOCs were methanol, ethanol, benzene and toluene. The sensitivities of the $Ppy/SnO_{2}$ sensor to benzene and toluene were very low at 1000 ppm (2.1 %, 1.5 %), while the sensitivities to methanol and ethanol was high (9 %, 11 %). It indicates that the sensors have selectivity to alcoholic gases such as methanol and ethanol.

  • In this study, we fabricated chemically polymerized PPy and PANi films with different selectivity by controlling dedoping time. And the sensing properties and mechanism of VOCs adsorption to conducting polymers were investigated. Thin sensor had higher sensitivity compared to thick one, and dedoped sensor for 1-minute highest sensitivity. Upon gas absorption, polypyrrole exhibited positive sensitivity while polyaniline had negative sensitivity. PPy film show hydrophilic property and PANi film show hydrophobic property. After the gas absorption, the sensitivity increased as a function of polarity of absorbed molecules. These behaviors are due to the polar molecules absorbed with the movable polaron or free carrier, and then it interrupt or generate the movement of polaron and carrier, and then it changes the conductivity of polymer. We found that conducting polymer sensors are very sensitive to the difference in polarity of gas molecules.

  • Electrically conductive polypyrrole-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PPy-PVP) nanofiber mats with a core-shell structure have been successfully fabricated by a two-step process: the formation of FeCl3-containing PVP nanofiber mat by electrospinning, and the vapor-phase polymerization (VPP) of pyrrole monomer on the mat in a sealed chamber at room temperature. Surface morphology and chemical composition of the PPy-PVP mat were characterized by SEM, EDX and FTIR analyses. The as-prepared nonwoven mat was composed of PPy-PVP nanofibers with an average diameter of 300 nm. The sheet conductivity of the nanofiber mat was measured to be approximately 0.01 S/cm by a four-point probe. We have also investigated gas-sensing properties of PPy-PVP nanofiber mat upon exposure to methanol vapor. The PPy-PVP nanofiber sensors were observed to have excellent methanol-sensing performance. The nanofiber-based core-shell nanostructure could give an opportunity to fabricate a highly sensitive and fast response sensor due to its high surfaceto-volume ratio.

  • We fabricated gas recognition system using conducting polymer sensor array for recognizing and analyzing VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) gases. The polypyrrole and polyaniline thin film sensors which were made by chemical polymerization were employed to detect VOCs. The multi-dimensional sensor signals obtained from the sensor array were analyzed using PCA(principal component analysis) technique and RBF(radial basis function) Network. Throughout the experimental trails, we confirmed that RBF Network is effective than PCA technique in identifying VOCs.

  • Conducting PPy/PVA composite and pure PPy gas sensors were prepared by in-situ vaporstate polymerization method in a vaporization chamber under N2 condition, by exposing the pre-coated electrode with PVA/FeC13 to distilled pyrrole monomer. The various electrical sensing behaviors of both types of sensors were systematically investigated by a flow measuring system including mass flow controller (MFC) and bubbling bottle. The FT-Raman spectroscopy of vapor state polymerized PPy was identical to that of chemically polymerized PPy, confirming the same chemical structure. Both types of sensors had positive sensitivity when exposed to methanol gas. The sensitivity varied linearly with gas concentration in the range of 50ppm to 1059ppm. The detection limit of PPy/PVA sensor was believed to be as low as 10ppm. The sensitivity of PPy/PVA composite sensor was higher than that of pure PPy sensor. Both the response time and recovery time of PPy/PVA composite sensors were longer than those of pure PPy sensors. The thickness of the sensing film affected the sensitivity this way that the sensor having thinner film had higher sensitivity, indicating that the resistance of polymer film involved in the sensing behavior was bulk resistance rather than surface resistance. The reproducibility of PPy/PVA composite sensor was excellent during eight on-off cycles by switching between N2 and 3000ppm methanol gas. The sensitivity of PPy/PVA composite sensor was only maintained for two weeks, while the sensitivity of pure PPy sensor was maintained over two months.

  • Conducting polymer sensors show high sensitivity when exposed to volatile organic compounds gases at room temperature. The 8 sensor array using by polypyrrole and polyaniline has been fabricated by chemical polymerization for measuring sensing characteristics of VOCs gases. Conducting polymer was polymerized by using distilled pyrrole, aniline as a monomer and ammonium persulfate (APS) as an oxidant and dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) as a dopant. Dedoped film was synthesized by reverse voltage and redoped film was synthesized by using 1-octanesulfonic acid sodium salt as another dopant in electrochemical cell. The sensitivity and reversibility were influenced by doping, dedoping, redoping and thickness for the polypyrrole and polyaniline. We investigated the relation between the structure of conducting polymer and sensitivity of these sensors through the analysis of scanning electron microscope (SEM), scanning probe microscope (SPM) and $\alpha$-step.
