  • The conditions of Soxhlet extraction and HPLC analysis were examined for the determination of antioxidants used for polyolefins manufacturing. The extraction with methylene chloride in a Soxhlet apparatus for 10 hours and above provides almost complete recovery of the additives from polyolefins. The determination of the antioxidants including BHT, Irganox 1076, Irganox 1010 and Irgafos 168 could be successfully performed by using reversed-phase HPLC under gradient elution where the baseline separation of all four antioxidants in a single run was possible. In addition, the antioxidants inherently contained in commercial LLDPE and OPP films were identified and quantitatively determined.

  • Because of their low surface free energy and absence of polar groups at the surface, polyolefins are substrates whose wetting and adhesion are very difficult. Free radical grafting of monomers to backbone polymer is one of the most attractive ways for the chemical modification of polymers. Synthesis of graft copolymer through graft polymerizations of PE and/or PP with phthalic anhydride (PhAn) was made and FTIR spectra of the graft polymer were the examined. And also the effects of phthalic anhydride content on the grafting ratio, thermal properties and contact angle of the graft polymer were examined.

  • Polyolefins are important commodity polymers with the largest volume of business owing to their outstanding combination of cost performance and excellent physical properties. However, the lack of functional groups often has limited their end uses, such as compatibilizer, modifier and adhesive, where the interaction with other materials is especially important. The incorporation of functional groups as polymer segments to afford block or graft polyolefin copolymers has been extensively investigated in the context of the functional polyolefin hybrids. Living polymerization processes have been considered to be an efficient method to prepare the polyolefin hybrids with precisely controlled architecture and compositions. Among the living polymerization techniques, controlled/"living" radical polymerization (CRP) methods are very effective not only because of the controllability of polymerization but also because of the versatility of monomers and polymerization conditions. In this review paper, progresses on the preparations of polyolefin graft or block copolymers through CRP techniques are summarized. The commodity polymers such as polyisobutylene, polyethylene and polypropylene are combined with polar segments such as polyacrylate, polymethacrylate, polystyrene to yield functionalized polyolefins.

  • Polyolefins show a very healthy growth rate among commodity polymer resins due to their low feedstock prices, recyclable and environmentally friendly characteristics and easily controllable performances. Capacity investment in polyolefin field is now moving from technology region to consumer region and feedstock region. Therefore, key success factors for polyolefin business in the other region such as Korea are cost reduction, development of highly value-added products and new applications and substitution of PVC, PS, PET and other EPs. To add additional value to commodity polyolefin products, high level of platform technology such as catalyst, process and structure-properties relationship is needed. Progress on polyolefin products has been very closely related to catalyst and process technology. According to this trend, SK Corporation has devoted a lot of research effort into development of new value-added polyolefin products based on the proprietary technology platform.

  • The worldwide annual production of polyolefins amounted to 60 million tons in 2000. During the process, 1-2 wt% of the olefin monomers have been emitted and flared into the air, causing the huge energy consumption and severe carbon dioxide emission. Recently, membrane process has been proved to be the most competitive among other separation processes in terms of cost of equipments, energy consumption and safety in this application. The performance of membrane process highly depends on the membrane properties and thus, it is very important to develop good membrane materials and composite membranes. We prepared PMDS dense and composite membranes and studied basic permeation behaviors of a series of olefins(ethylene, propylene, 1 -butylene), nitrogen and hydrogen as model gases.

  • Annually, 60 millions tons of polyolefins including polyethylene and polypropylene, etc. are produced in the world. During the manufacturing process, 1-2wt% of olefin gases of total feedstock remains unreacted and incinerated into air. Because of high cost of olefins and hazardous emission of carbon dioxide and toxic gases in incineration process, it is of important to recover them efficiently.(omitted)
