A solvent-soluble polyimide (PI) polymeric binder was synthesized by a two-step reaction for silicon (Si) anodes for lithium-ion batteries. Polyamic acid was first prepared through ring opening between two monomers, bicyclo[2,2,2]oct-7-ene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BCDA) and 4,4-oxydianiline (ODA), followed by condensation reaction. Using the synthesized PI polymeric binder (molecular weight = ~10,945), the coating slurry was then prepared and Si anode was fabricated. For the control system, Si anode based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF, molecular weight = ~350,000) having the same constituent ratio was prepared. During precycling, PI polymeric binder revealed much improved discharge capacity ($2,167mAh\;g^{-1}$) compared to that of using PVDF polymeric binder ($1,740mAh\;g^{-1}$), while the Coulombic efficiency of two systems were similar. PI polymeric binder improved the cycle retention ability during cycles compared to that of using PVDF, which is attributed to an improved adhesion property inside Si anode diminishing the dimensional stress during Si volume changes. The adhesion property of each polymeric binder in Si anode was confirmed by surface and interfacial cutting analysis system (SAICAS) (Si anode based on PI polymeric binder = $0.217kN\;m^{-1}$ and Si anode based on PVDF polymeric binder = $0.185kN\;m^{-1}$).
In aqueous slurry processing of silicon nitride, the interaction of dispersant and binder used as polymeric processing additives on the silicon nitride particle surface was studied to identify the effect of these processing polymeric additives on the ceramic powder processing. The adsoprtion isotherm study of anionic organic molecule as dispersant and nonionic organic molecules as binder of silicon nitricde was studied to investigate the effect of these processing organic additives on the physicochemical properties of silicon nitride particles. As anionic molecule adsorbed onto silicon nitrice surface, the IEP of silicon nitride shifted toward acidic pH and changed the stability of silicon nitride particle. However, the adsorption of binder as nonionic organic molecule onto silicon nitride surface did not changed the IEP but caused the decrease of electrostatic potentials of silicon nitride. These distinctive adsorption behaviors of organic additives on silicon nitride particles can be closely correlated to the stability of silicon nitride particles suspended in aqueous media.

In this study, the properties of no-fines polymer concrete with different polymer binder contents were evaluated. The polymer concrete was formulated using a polymeric binder (unsaturated polyester resin), fly ash, and recycled coarse aggregate (60%) and crushed coarse aggregate (40%). The polymeric binder content (4.0-6.0wt.%) was used as an experimental variable because it dramatically affects both the cost-effectiveness and material properties. The results showed that the density, compressive strength, flexural strength both before and after exposure to freezing and thawing increased as the polymer binder content increased, while the absorption, void ratio, permeable voids, coefficient of permeability, and acid resistance (mass loss by acid attack) decreased as the polymeric binder content increased. In particular, even though the void ratio was 18.4% and the water permeability coefficient was 7.3mm/sec, the compressive strength and flexural strength were as high as 38.0MPa and 10.0MPa, respectively, much more significant than those of previous studies. Other properties such as absorption and acid resistance were also found to be excellent. The results appear to be rooted in the increased adhesion of the binder by adding a cross-linking agent and the surface hydrophobicity of the polymer.
This study focused on the influences regarding the use of polyepoxide-based polymer and silica fume (SF) on the fresh and hardened state properties of self-compacting lightweight concrete (SCLC) along with their impacts on electrical resistance and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). To do so, two series of compositions each of which consists of twelve mixes, with water to binder (W/B) ratios of 0.35 and 0.4 were cast. Three different silica fume/binder ratios of 0, 5%, and 10% were considered along with four different polymer/binder ratios of 0, 5%, 10%, and 15%. Afterwards, the rupture modulus, tensile strength, 14-day, 28-day, and 90-day compressive strength, the UPV and the electrical resistance of the mixes were tested. The results indicated that although the use of polymer could enhance the passing and filling abilities, it could lead to a decrease of segregation resistance. In addition, the interaction of the SF and the polymeric contents enhanced the workability. However, the impacts regarding the use of polymeric contents on fresh state properties of SCLC were more prevalent than those regarding the use of SF. Besides the fresh state properties, the durability and mechanical properties of the mixes were affected due to the use of polymeric and SF contents. In other words, the use of the SF and the polymer enhanced the durability and mechanical properties of SCLC specimens.
Liquid crystal display (LCD) devices contain a colour filter which can visualise colour images by transmitting or absorbing light. Colour properties of LCD mainly depend on colour materials such as pigments and polymeric binders. In this paper, colour properties were studied to improve colour quality of LCD. Generally, the colour properties can be classified into three categories which are colour purity, brightness and contrast ratio. For this study, photo resists were prepared by treatment of pigments and synthesis of polymeric binder. The treated pigments were dispersed and formulated with additives for preparing a photo resist that could be used for manufacturing colour filters. As a result of what we studied, type, mixture ratio and concentration of pigments were very important to improve colour purity of LCD device.
Spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) has been considered as one of most promising cathode material, because of its low-cost and competitive energy density. However, 4.7V vs. Li/Li+ of high operating potential facilitates electrolyte degradation on cathode-electrolyte interface during charge-discharge process. In particular, commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is not sutaible for LNMO cathode binder because its weak van der waals force induces thick and non-uniform coverage on the cathode surface. In this review, we study high performance binders for LNMO cathode, which forms uniform coating layer to prevent direct contact between electrolyte and LNMO particle as well as modifying high quality cathode electrolyte interphase, improved cell performace.
The coating material for the ink-jet printing paper tends to be waterbase as the waterbase ink-jet ink is used more widely. Waterbase coating material consists of alumina sol as a pigment, poly(vinyl alcohol) as a main binder and polymeric additive for improving properties. In this study, polymeric auditive was synthesized by combining one or toto monomers among methacrylic acid, acrylic acid and acrylamide to the basic monomers, styrene and n-butylacrylate. The properties of printability such as ink absorption, ink spreading, and optical density, glossiness and water resistance were investigated by changing the kinds of surfactants, the composition of monomers and the structure of polymer particles. Results showed that materials containing anionic surfactant and/or acrylic acid had problems in com-patibility with alumina sol. Also, coating materials containing acrylamide had good printability and lout glossiness while those containing methacrylic acid did not have good printability and high glossiness.

Advanced polymeric binders with unique functions such as improvements in the electronic conduction network, mechanical adhesion, and mechanical durability during cycling have recently gained an increasing amount of attention as a promising means of creating high-performance silicon (Si) anodes in lithium-ion batteries with high energy density levels. In this review, we describe the key challenges of Si anodes, particularly highlighting the recent progress in the area of polymeric binders for Si anodes in cells.
In this work, the effects of binder materials on the tribological behavior were experimentally evaluated for air curable MoS$_2$bonded film lubricants. The binders tested were basically alkyd and acryl based resins, and also were modified by nitro-cellulose in various weight percentages. Effects on the binder ratio to solid lubricants and the molecular weight of binders were also investigated in all aspects of the tribological behavior. For the tests, LFW-1 and Falex tester were used to measure mainly the endurance life and load carrying capacity of bonded lubricants. Results showed that lubricants of methacrylic resin has the better performance than those of other resins, and also the properties of lubricants both of alkyd and acrylic resins could be improved by modification with nitro-cellulose. It was also shown that the optimum ratio of nitro-cellulose related closely to the binder material and the testing machine.

A new characterization method using a porous plug model was proposed to determine the degree of sulfonation (DS) of ionomer binder with respect to the membrane used in membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) and to analyze the fraction of proton pathways through ionomer-catalyst combined electrodes in MEAs for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) was prepared to use a polymeric electrolyte and laboratory-made SPEEK solution (5wt.%, DMAc based) was added to catalyst slurry to form catalyst layers. In case of the SPEEK-based MEAs in this study, DS of ionomer binder for catalyst layers should be the same or higher than that of the SPEEK membrane used in the MEAs. The porous plug model suggested that most of protons were via the ionomer binder (${\sim}92.5%$) bridging the catalyst surface to the polymeric electrolyte, compared with the pathways through the alternative between the interstitial water on the surface of ionomer binder or catalyst and the ionomer binder (${\sim}7.3%$) and through only the interstitial water on the surface of ionomer or catalyst (${\sim}0.2%$) in the electrode of the MEA comprising of the sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) membrane and the 5wt.% SPEEK ionomer binder. As a result, it was believed that the majority of proton at both electrodeds moves through ionomer binder until reaching to electrolyte membrane. The porous plug model of the electrodes of MEAs reemphasized the importance of well-optimized structure of ionomer binder and catalyst for fuel cells.
