  • Preplaced aggregate concrete in the building fields has recently been used in the partial repair works for damaged reinforced concrete structures, and polymer-modified mortars have been employed as grouting mortars for the preplaced aggregate concrete. The objective of this study is to clear the properties of polymer-modified grouting mortars. Polymer-modified mortars using a polystyrene acrylic(St/Ac) emulsion as grouting mortars for preplaced aggregate concrete are prepared with various mix proportions, and tested for flexural and compressive strengths, adhesion in tension. The flexural strength of emulsion-modified grouting mortars does not give much variation with increasing fly ash replacement for cement and sand-binder ratio. With increasing polymer-binder ratio, the flexural strength and adhesion in tension of St/Ac emulsion-modified grouting mortars increases, become nearly constant or reaches a maximum at a polymer-binder ratio of 5%. From the test results, St/Ac emulsion-modified grouting mortar with a polymer-binder ratio of 5%, a fly ash replacement of 10% for cement and sand-binder ratio of 1.0 is recommended as a grouting mortar for preplaced aggregate concrete.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the properties of polymer-modified mortars using asphalt emulsion. The polymer-modified mortars using asphalt emulsion with various asphalt-cement ratios are prepared, and tested for flexural and compressive strengths, water absorption and permeability, carbonation, Cl ion penetration and chemical resistance. From the test results, the flexural and compressive strengths, water absorption and permeability, carbonation and Cl ion penetration depths of polymer-modified mortars using asphalt emulsion tend to be decreased with increasing asphalt-cement ratio, and chemical resistance is improved. It is evident that polymer-modified mortars using asphalt emulsion having an excellent properties as a waterproof and finish materials can be produced.

  • PURPOSES: The objectives of this study were to develop a new polymer-modified emulsion for application to tack coats and to evaluate its properties by comparing it with other types of asphalt emulsions, with the goal of providing an enhanced tack coat material for use in construction. METHODS: Modified asphalt binders were developed from using SBS and SBR latex in the laboratory, and their fundamental properties, such as their penetration index and PG grade, were evaluated. Based on the properties, a new tack coat material was developed. To evaluate the newly developed asphalt emulsion, the bonding strength between the two layers of HMA was measured by applying a uniaxial tensile test and shear test. For the tests, a total of four different conditions were applied to the specimens, including the developed asphalt emulsion, latex modified asphalt emulsion, conventional asphalt emulsion, and non-tack coating. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the developed asphalt emulsion exhibits the best bonding strength behavior among all of the three types. Also, the two types of polymer-modified emulsions were found to be better for application for use as a tack coat than a conventional emulsion. Especially, at a high temperature ($50^{\circ}C$), the conventional asphalt emulsion no longer acts as a tack coating material. Therefore, the polymer-modified emulsion should be considered for application to tack coat construction during the summer.

  • The flexural and compressive strengths of polymer-modified mortars containing FRP wastes were investigated. The specimens of polymer-modified mortars containing FRP mortat were perpared by using styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) latex, ethylene-vinyl acetate(EVA) emulsion and polyacrylic ester(PAE) emulsion with various FRP-sand ratios(10, 20, 30, 40, 50wt%). The compressive and flexural strengths of polymer-mokified mortars containing FRP wastes were decreased with an increase of FRP-sand ratio. But the compressive and flexural strengths of PAE polymer-modified mortar were more improved than OPC, whereas those of SBR and EVA polymer-modified mortars containing FRP wastes were decreased than OPC.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the bond strength of asphalt emulsions including polymer-modified emulsions for chip seals and fog seals using the bitumen bond strength (BBS) test. METHODS : For the laboratory testing, the Pneumatic Adhesion tensile Testing Instrument(PATTI) device is used to measure the bond strength between the asphalt emulsion and aggregate substrate based on the AASHTO TP-91. In order to conduct all the tests in controled condition, all test procedures are performed in the environmental chamber. The CRS-2L and the SBS CRS-2P emulsions are used as a polymer-modified emulsion, and then unmodified emulsion, the CRS-2, is compared for the evaluation of chip seal performance. For the fog seal performance evaluation, two types of polymer-modified emulsions and one of unmodified emulsion, the CSS-1H, are employed. For chip seal study, the BBS tests are performed at 30, 60, 120, and 240 minutes of curing times with curing and testing temperatures of $15^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $35^{\circ}C$. The fog seal tests are conducted at 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 minutes, and 24 hours with curing and testing temperatures of $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, and $35^{\circ}C$. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS : Overall, chip seal emulsions and fog seal emulsions show the similar bond strength trend. At the same testing condition, polymer-modified emulsions show better bond strength than unmodified emulsions. Also, there is no significant difference between polymer-modified emulsions. One of important findings is that the most bond strength reaches their final bond strength within one hour of curing time. Therefore, the early curing time plays a vital role in the performance of chip seals and fog seals.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of rapid-setting polymer-modified asphalt mixtures with a high reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content. METHODS: A literature review revealed that emulsified asphalt is actively used for cold-recycled pavement. First, two types of rapid-setting polymer-modified asphalt emulsion were prepared for application to high-RAP material with no virgin material content. The quick-setting polymer-modified asphalt mixtures using two types of rapid-setting polymer-modified asphalt emulsion were subjected to the following tests: 1) Marshall stability test, 2) water immersion stability test and 3) indirect tensile strength ratio test. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS : Additional re-calibration of the RAP was needed for laboratory verification because the results of analyzing RAP aggregates, which were collected from different job sites, did not deviate from the normal range. The Marshall stability of each type of binder under dry conditions was good. However, the Type B mixtures with bio-additives performed better in the water immersion stability test. Moreover, the overall results of the indirect tensile strength test of RAP mixtures with Type B emulsions exceeded 0.7. Further research, consisting of lab testing and on-site application, will be performed to verify the possibility of using RAP for minimizing the closing of roadways.

  • Asphalt emulsion is manufactured by the emulsification of asphalt, and is considered as an energy-saving, ecologically safe material because it does not need any heating processes with gas emission and fire hazard in its use. This study is concerned with evaluating the feasibility of the use of an asphalt emulsion as a poly-meric admixture. Asphalt-modified mortars using an experimentally manufactured asphalt emulsion were prepared with various polymer-cement ratios, and tested far the mechanical properties such as strengths and adhesion and the properties related to durability such as water absorption, permeation, carbonation and chloride ion penetration. As a result, the waterproofness, carbonation resistance and chloride ion penetration resistance of the asphalt-modified mortars were markedly improved with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio, but their compressive strength and adhesion to mortar substrates were reduced with increasing polymer-cement ratio. Therefore, it is recommended to control their polymer-cement ratio to be $10\%$ or lower in their practical applications. Further study to improve their compressive strength and adhesion is needed.

  • Polymer emulsion was used as the admixture for the purpose of increasing the mechanical properties of cement mortar. The effect of polymer emulsion admixture on compressive strength and tensile strength and chemical resistance, relative humidity on compressive and tensile strength, sand particles on water absorption were studied. The results were as follows. 1. Polymer emulson modified mortar cured under 95% of realative humidity showed lower strength than the mortar cured at dry condition. 2. The maximum strength was attained at 10~20% of polystyrene and polyacrylic acid ester polymer-cement mortar. 3. The modified mortar (sand size rate (-9+35)mech:(-35+60)mech=4 : 1) was 1.5 times lower than the modified mortar (1 : 1) in water absorption. 4. Compared with the ordinary mortar, the modified mortar showed 2~3 times greater chemical resistance for 5% HCl or 5% H2SO4.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the curing and adhesive behavior of asphalt emulsions including polymer-modified emulsions for chip seals and fog seals. METHODS : For the laboratory testing, the evaporation test, the bitumen bond strength (BBS) test, and the Vialit test are used. Also, the rolling ball test and the damping test are employed to evaluate the curing properties of the fog seal emulsions. For the fog seal performance evaluation, two types of polymer-modified emulsions (FPME-1 and FPME-2) and one of unmodified emulsion, the CSS-1H, are employed. All the tests are performed at different curing times and temperatures. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS : Overall, PMEs show better curing and adhesive behavior than non-PMEs regardless of treatments types. Especially, the curing and adhesive behavior of PMEs is much better than non-PMEs before 120 minutes of curing time. Since all the test results indicate that after 120 minutes of curing time the curing adhesive behavior of emulsions, the early curing time, i.e., 120 minutes, plays an important role in the performance of chip seals and fog seals.
