A Study on Laser Welding for 3D Printed Metal Plate and Polymer (금속 3D 프린팅 소재와 폴리머 레이저접합에 관한 연구)

  • A 3D printed metal part and thermal plastic polymer part were joined by direct laser irradiation. The 3D metal part was fabricated by using DED(Direct Energy Deposition) with STS316 material. The experiment was carried out through no patterned metal surface, 3D metal printed surface and micro laser patterned surface. The most secure joining quality was obtained at the laser micro patterned surface specimen and the counterparts of polymers were PLA and PE based thermo plastics. The applied laser power was 350Watt and the distance of patterns was maintained at $150{\mu}m$. The laser line width was optimized at $450{\mu}m$ and the laser micro pattern depth was $180{\mu}m$ for the best joining quality. Based on the result analysis, the possibility of laser material joining for metal to polymer was proposed and multi-material joining will be possible in 3D laser direct material fabrication.

Analysis of Transmission Infrared Laser Bonding for Polymer Micro Devices (폴리머 마이크로 장치에 대한 레이저 투과 마이크로 접합)

  • A precise bonding technique, transmission laser bonding using energy transfer, for polymer micro devices is presented. The irradiated IR laser beam passes through the transparent part and absorbed on the opaque part. The absorbed energy is converted into heat and bonding takes place. In order to optimize the bonding quality, the temperature profile on the interface must be obtained. Using optical measurements of the both plates, the absorbed energy can be calculated. At the wavelength of 1100nm $87.5\%$ of incident laser energy was used for bonding process from the calculation. A heat transfer model was applied for obtaining the transient temperature profile. It was found that with the power of 29.5 mW, the interface begins to melt and bond each other in 3 sec and it is in a good agreement with experiment results. The transmission IR laser bonding has a potential in the local precise bonding in MEMS or Lab-on-a-chip applications.

A Study on the Mechanical Properties of Joints in Laser Transmission Joining of Polymers (폴리머의 레이저 투과접합 시 접합부의 기계적 성질에 관한 연구)

  • Laser Transmission Joining (LTJ) of plastics is a process in which light of suitable wavelength is transmitted through a transparent substrate that is in contact with an absorbing one. In this paper, LTJ is investigated by preliminary experiments from the viewpoint of mechanical engineering. To understand transmitting characteristics of each polymer substrate, transmission rate, reflection rate and absorption coefficient of polymer are measured by using a laser power-meter. Characteristics of joining in the spot welding and seam welding are investigated by measuring the fracture load. Fracture load increases in accordance to the laser power and irradiation time. However, when the laser power is over 60W and irradiation time over 4seconds, fracture load decreases. This phenomenon is probably due to heat-softening of materials. Besides, cavities are generated at a joint by evaporation of water molecules, which can be suppressed by introduction of a gap between two substrates.

Hybrid (CNC+Laser) process for polymer welding (하이브리드 방식 (CNC+Laser)을 이용한 폴리머용접공정)

  • Polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) was welded through a combination of a diode laser and CNC. Laser beam passed the transparent PC and was absorbed in an opaque ABS. Polymers were melted and welded by absorbed and conducted heat. Experiments were carried out by varying working distance from 44mm to 50mm for the focus spot diameter control, laser input power from 10W to 25W, and scanning speed from 100 to 400mm/min. The weld bead size and the specimen cross-section were analyzed, and tensile results were presented through the joint force measurement. With focus distance at 48mm, laser power with 20W, and welding speed at 300mm/min, experimental results showed the best welding quality which bead size was 3.75mm and the shear strength was $22.8N/mm^2$. Considering tensile strength of ABS is $43N/mm^2$, shear strength was sufficient to hold two materials. A single process was possible in CNC machining processes, surface processing, hole machining and welding. As a result, the process cycle time was reduced to 25%. Compared to a typical process, specimens were fabricated in a single process, with high precision. By combining two operations processes developed process gained 50% more efficiency.

  • The water proofing sheet of synthetic polymer applies to the purification plant, the wastewater treatment center, the low waterway, the dosing tanks, etc, and when we construct these, we apply the dual waterproof by means of hot air staking welder or extruder. However, the experts skilled in the hot air welding or extruder does not use them, it can be a quality problem. Therefore, in this study, it is the purpose to verify whether the semi-automatic hot air staking welder and automatic extruder that can construct the waterproof sheet is possible in field even if it is not a professional specialist.

Characterization of laser welding for biodegradable acetate polymer for glass rims (안경테제조를 위한 친환경 아세테이트 수지의 레이저 접합특성에 관한 연구)

  • Laser beam was applied on the boundary of the polyurethane and biodegradable polyacetate polymers. The distributed laser passed through the polyurethane layer and heated the polyacetate layer, then the soften acetate was squeezed thorough the 1mm square slots of polyurethane for the mechanical joining. The surface roughness ranging between $0.28{\mu}m$ and $3.06{\mu}m$ had almost no effect on joining strength, but the optical properties of HD (High Definition) and UHD (Ultra High Definition) mode affected laser beam transmittance. The optimum laser power was found to be between 8watt and 10watt with 500mm/min of scanning speed. The joining boundary was characterized by optical and SEM analysis. Based on the experiment and characterization results, the laser energy was effective for the polymer joining and efficiency of joining.

  • Small FRP(fiber-reinforced polymer) fishing ships have numerous problems with the point of the environmental and recycling perspectives. In light of these aspects, aluminum can be used as a material for ship building. It is environmental friendly, easy to recycle, and provides a high added value to fishing boats. In this paper, we report on mechanical and electrochemical characteristics of welding parts for friction stir welded 5456-H116 Al alloy. In friction stir welded at various traveling speeds under the rotation speed of 500 RPM, the best characteristics presented in traveling speed of 15mm/min. The anodic polarizations of base metal and welding metal were observed tendency which current density from the open circuit potential suddenly increase. The cathodic polarization presented concentrated polarization caused by the dissolved oxygen reduction reaction and activation polarization caused by hydrogen generation. From result of Tafel analysis, the corrosion potential of 5456 alloy(Base metal) was lower than that of friction stir welded part, as were its corrosion current densities.

Laser Transmission Welding of Flexible Substrates and Evaluation of the Mechanical Properties (플렉서블 기판의 레이저 투과 용접 및 기계적 특성 평가)

  • In order to improve the mechanical reliability of next-generation electronic devices including flexible, wearable devices, a high level of mechanical reliability is required at various flexible joints. Organic adhesive materials such as epoxy for bonding existing polymer substrates inevitably have an increase in the thickness of the joint and involve problems of thermodynamic damage due to repeated deformation and high temperature hardening. Therefore, it is required to develop a low-temperature bonding process to minimize the thickness of the joint and prevent thermal damage for flexible bonding. This study developed flexible laser transmission welding (f-LTW) that allows bonding of flexible substrates with flexibility, robustness, and low thermal damage. Carbon nanotube (CNT) is thin-film coated on a flexible substrate to reduce the thickness of the joint, and a local melt bonding process on the surface of a polymer substrate by heating a CNT dispersion beam laser has been developed. The laser process conditions were constructed to minimize the thermal damage of the substrate and the mechanism of forming a CNT junction with the polymer substrate. In addition, lap shear adhesion test, peel test, and repeated bending experiment were conducted to evaluate the strength and flexibility of the flexible bonding joint.
