Research on polymer matrix composites with excellent molding processability and mechanical properties in the automotive field including hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles is expanding to Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) to support the design of materials with specific mechanical properties. CAE automation requires the prediction of the mechanical properties and behavior of materials. Unlike single materials, the mechanical properties prediction of polymer matrix composites is difficult to explain with formulas because the mechanical behavior is complicated to be explained only by the relationship between the matrix and the filler. In this study, the stress-strain curve according to the composition of polymer matrix composites, which was difficult to predict due to its sensitivity to large plastic deformation and composition, was predicted based on machine learning of the test data. The developed model finds a complex correlation between matrix and filler types and compositions, and predicts the total stress-strain curve meaningfully even in the absence of learned test data. It is expected that the material design AI system can be completed in the future based on the developed model that predicts the mechanical properties of polymer matrix composites even for the combination and composition that have not been learned.

This study presents preparation and characterization of composite membranes based on ionic liquids. The ionic liquids act as water in sulfonated membranes. On the behalf of ionic conduction through ionic liquid inside the membranes, non-aqueous membranes showed Arrenhius dependence on temperature with no external humidification. It was implied that hopping mechanism of proton was dominant in the ionic liquid based membranes. In addition, small angle X-ray (SAXS) studies provided the information on morphology of ionic clusters formed by the interaction between sulfonic acid groups of the polymers and ionic liquids. The SAXS spectra showed matrix peaks, ionomer peaks and Prodo's law for Nafion based composite membranes and only matrix peaks for hydrocarbon based ones. However, ionic conductivity and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images showed the clear formation of ionic clusters of the hydrocarbon based composite membranes. It implies for ionic liquid based high temperature membranes that it is important to use sulfonated polymers as solid matrix of ionic liquid which can form clear ionic clusters in SAXS spectra.

The effect of nanoclay (Cloisite 20A) on the self-adhesion behavior of uncured brominated-isobutylene-isoprene rubber (BIIR) has been studied. The dispersion state of nanoclay into the rubber matrix was examined by SEM, TEM and XRD analysis. The thermal degradation behavior of the filled and unfilled samples was examined by TGA and improvement in the thermal stability of the nanocomposites occurred based on the weight loss (%) measurements. Also, addition of nanoclay enhanced the cohesive strength of the material by reinforcement action thereby reducing the degree of molecular diffusion across the interface of butyl rubber. However, the average depth of penetration of the inter-diffused chains was still adequate to form entanglement on either side of the interface, and thus offered greater resistance to peeling, resulting in high tack strength measurements. The improvement in tack strength was only achieved at critical nanoclay loading above 8 phr. Contact angle measurement was also made to examine the surface characteristics. There was no significant interfacial property change by employing the nanoclay.
To improve the application of polymeric dental restorative composite (PDRC) for the posterior and anterior restoration, silica bridged with siloxane unit was firstly prepared by heat-treating a silica filler at various temperatures. Degree of conversion (DC), depth of cure, and dynamic volumetric polymerization shrinkage values of PDRC filled with silica bridged with siloxane unit were investigated to study the effect of heat-treated silica on the polymerization behavior of PDRC. From the experimental result, it was found that depth of cure was decreased with an increase of heat treatment temperature. on the other hand, both DC and polymerization shrinkage values were uniformly enhanced with increasing the heat treatment temperature. This phenomenon can be explained from the study that showed decrease of average particle size of silica resulted in the increase of relative amount of resin matrix in PDRC.

Interfacial and microfailure properties of carbon fiber/epoxy matrix composites were evaluated using both tensile fragmentation and compressive Broutman tests with acoustic emission (AE). Amino-silane and maleic anhydride polymeric coupling agents were used via the dipping and electrodeposition (ED), respectively. Both coupling agents exhibited higher improvements in interfacial shear strength (IFSS) under tensile tests than compressive cases. However, ED treatment showed higher IFSS improvement than dipping case under both tensile and compressive test. The typical microfailure modes including fiber break, matrix cracking, and interlayer failure were observed during tensile test, whereas the diagonal slippage in fiber ends was observed during compressive test. For both the untreated and treated cases AE distributions were separated well under tensile testing. On the other hand, AE distributions were rather closer under compressive tests because of the difference in failure energies between tensile and compressive loading. Under both loading conditions, fiber breaks occurred around just before and after yielding point. Maximum AE voltage fur the waveform of carbon or basalt fiber breakage under tensile tests exhibited much larger than those under compressive tests.
Interfacial evaluation, damage sensing and cure monitoring of single carbon fiber/thermo setting composite with different curing processes were investigated using electro-micromechanical test. After curing, the residual stress was monitored by measurement of electrical resistance and then compared to various curing processes. In thermal curing case, matrix tensile strength, modulus and interfacial shear strength were higher than those of ultraviolet curing case. The shrinkage measured during thermal curing occurred significantly by matrix shrinkage and residual stress due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient. The apparent modulus measured in the thermal curing indicated that mechanical and interfacial properties were highly improved. The reaching time to the same stress of thermal curing was faster than that of UV curing case.
The conducting composites were prepared by solution blending of polyaniline (PANI) as a conducting polymer and polycarbonate (PC) as a matrix in chloroform. Also the composites film was prepared by solution casting method. The PANI was protonated with alkylbenzenesulfonic acids, such as camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) or dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA). The electrical conductivity of composites prepared by solution casting was enhanced compared with that of compression molding. The electrical conductivity, tensile strength and morphology were observed as a function of the amount of protonating agent as well as PANI complex content. In general, as the PANI complex content was increased, the electrical conductivity increased. In the case of the composite film containing 25 wt % of PANI complex doped with DBSA, the electrical conductivity exhibited 3.18 S/cm.

Single lap-shear joints (SLJ) specimens with and without partial round fillets were fabricated to measure the average shear strength of adhesives. The effects of the length of the adherend on the SLJ specimens were also investigated. An epoxy adhesive was used to bond aluminum alloy. Tensile tests were performed on the adhesive bulk specimens to measure the mechanical properties. The finite element analysis (FEA) method was used to measure the adhesive stress distributions, i.e., the peel and shear stresses, on the bonded part. The experimental results revealed that the specimen consisting short length of adherend and without the partial round fillets exhibited the smallest average shear strength of adhesive among the investigated specimens. FEA revealed that the low average shear strength for the specimen with a short adherend length was caused by high stress concentrations on the adhesive at the edge of the bonded part.
Poly pyrrole polymer(ppy) has an excellent electrical conductivity and can be easily polymerized on anode to give various morophology according to doped anion on electroactive sites. To improve the properties of brittleness, ageing and hydrophobisity, poly furan polymer(pfu) having a high initiation potential was anodically implanted in this porous ppy film matrix to get the Pt/ppy/pfu(x)type of polymer composite electrode. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance methods were used to these electrode, where $PF_6^-,\; BF_4^-$, and $ClO_4^-$ ions were employed as dopants. The composition of the pfu(x) at the electrode was changed from 0 to 1.10, but the range was useful only at 0.1 to 0.2 as the redox electrode. The polymer composite electrode doped with $PF_6^-$ was better in charge transfer resistance by a factor of 40 times and in double layer capacitance by a factor of 20 times than others. The charge transfer in the polymer film of the electrode was influenced on frequency change and equivalent circuit of this electrode had Warburg impedance including mass transfer.
In this study, An optimization code that can design microwave absorbing composite laminates is developed, and 3-layered microwave absorbing composite laminates are developed by optimizing the thickness of each layer. The layers are 3 different composite laminates. Many variables including lay-up angles of electromagnetically orthotropic composite layer can be considered in this code. The developed laminate is composed of an impedance matching layer of glass/epoxy fabric laminate, a glass/epoxy fabric laminate layer containing aluminum filler and carbon/epoxy fabric laminate layer. Permittivities of the materials are obtained using a network analyzer and a coaxial air line.
