  • Polymer layered silicate nanocomposite has become an important area of polymer research becaues of its predominant properties in mechanical and thermal properties. Polymer layered silicate nanocomposites show outstanding improvements in tensile strength and modulus, heat distortion temperature, gas and liquid permeability, solvent resistance, and so on. But These improved properties are realized only when silicate particles are well dispersed in polymer matrix. (omitted)

  • Microstructure tailoring of filler loaded preceramic polymer systems offers a high potential for property improvement of Si-based ceramics and composites. Advancements in manufacturing of bulk materials by controlling microstructure evolution during thermal induced polymer-ceramic transforma-tion and polymer-filler reactions will be presented. Rate controlled pyrolysis, multilayer gradient laminate design and surface modification by gas solid reaction are demonstrated to yield ceramic components of high fractional density and superior mechanical properties. Emerging fields of applications are presented.

  • The wavelength dispersion of birefringence (or retardation) is very important property for optical use of polymer films. Birefringence free film and retardation film have been widely used for applications such as liquid crystal display (LCD). In this study, miscible polymer blends which consist of polymers of positive and negative birefringence were found. By operating composition and orientation of molecules in the transparent blend films, the behavior of wavelength dispersion of birefringence (retardation) was controlled. The applicability to wideband birefringence free film and quarter wave (retardation) film was discussed.
